Just started reading Christmas at Tiffany's by Karen Swan. I'm only a few pages in, but so far so good.

What about any of the Number One Ladies Detective Agency books by Alexander McCall Smith? They are delightful and undemanding, yet not as unsatisfying as candy floss.

Any of the books by Alexander McCall Smith might work for you. There is the Number One Ladies Detective Agency series but the Scotland Street series is also really good and a fair few recognisable personality types included in them!

Elli Fitz, Dawn by the River..only 99p on Kindle, story of tough decisions for narrator Dani. Child or abortion after a drunken sex experience....motherhood wins and journey through the lives with Sacha and Mom Dani but will Jack return to their loving relationship. I've read it and know and loved it.
Also Tainted Tree by Jackie Luben, less than £2 on amazon for ereaders an excellently written story following Addie an adopted child who starts her genealogy tree investigations with unusual turn ups and new friendships...lovely story again.
I have noted the Karen Swan book thanks DuchessofMalfi...nice name!
