Present for adopters

My friends will be bringing their little boy home next week (16 months) and I want to get him/them a present to mark the occasion, but I know that the little boy shouldn't be inundated with new toys etc going into his new home. Any bright ideas? What would have been good for you when you had just adopted?

We were given lots of books and puzzles - he had plenty of boy toys (like trucks) but no doing toys and v few books. I was v grateful. He was 2.5 though - but your friend could
always put them away for 3 or 4 months.

Otherwise - just your support and maybe a home cooked meal! The other thing I found - being a first time mother - was how dry my hands got - and was really thankful
for some hand cream!!

I would second the books idea. We also received a lot of 'the next size up' clothes for DD, which was great. She arrived with some clothes, and we got to buy some too in all the excitement, and then she had a ready made wardrobe six months later :)

vouchers for mothercare and and offer to shop with her. I just loved feeling able to legitimately shop in Mothercare (it wore off when shoe shopping for a 6 year old started )

Thanks for the ideas. I think books might be best. I know he is coming with plenty current clothes, and for next size up clothes he'll be getting all my little boys clothes, so he'll probably have too many of them! Vouchers would be good too.

My boy loved dinosaurs - got into them at about 22 months. Also - he loves "Giraffes can't dance" book - has a v sweet message about how everyone is different but everyone can find their "something" which makes them special. A nice message for any child but particularly an adopted child.

Oh yes - I second "Dig, dig, digging". My boy is also obsessed with the Hungry Caterpillar! Nice that classics are still read.

My friend also bought me the cardboard version of "Guess how much I love you." Again - my boy loves me reading that...

Our most useful present was paintpots!

For that age I'd go with, finger paints and large sheets of low quality coloured paper. Or bubbles.

Nice chocolates / biscuits etc for the parents to unwind with after the LO is in bed sleeping like and angel.
