www.britishsurnames.co.uk

Sorry don't know how to do link with my phone.

According to this there are 412 people with my surname in the UK.

How about you?

Pascha Fri 08-Mar-13 17:27:54

1998 with my surname. 333 with my maiden name. I will take my married name over my maiden name any day.

Quenelle Fri 08-Mar-13 17:29:19

Ooh, thanks mamapants I like this.

There are 627 with my surname in the UK. 990 in the US.

There 125574 with my maiden name in the UK.

DewDr0p Fri 08-Mar-13 17:29:41

Ooh you're quite rare. There are 8926 of my clan!

3570 with my married name

0 with my maiden name

HappyJustToBe Fri 08-Mar-13 17:30:49

3384 here but only 282 in Australia. May need to go there to feel special!

Squillions - I'm common as muck. My surname is British top three, and my first name is top twenty, so the combination is not exactly unusual!

Useful when people try to Google me; they find dozens of other people first...

MrsHowardRoark Fri 08-Mar-13 17:31:52

It can't tell me my number as there are so few, but it must be at least 5. There were 8 in 1881.

Whyriskit Fri 08-Mar-13 17:32:14

79658 with my maiden name and 6848 with my married name.

DebK2012 Fri 08-Mar-13 17:32:29

I'm a rarity as no one else has my name! confused

mamapants Fri 08-Mar-13 17:33:54

Thought I was fairly rare till Pasha beat me in first reply :-)

Sharpkat Fri 08-Mar-13 17:34:01

26415 in the UK. 199th most common. Dead common me, but actually vair posh. I hate my surname with a passion.

fishybits Fri 08-Mar-13 17:34:32

None apparently which is odd since I know 5.

januaryjojo Fri 08-Mar-13 17:34:36

My surname, 1770 in uk, twice as many in the USA !!

My DP and DC surname, no records apparently a genuine rarity!!

muddybloodypuddles Fri 08-Mar-13 17:35:12

Not listed! A rarity apparently...

697 which is 3 more than in 1881

None!

I'm not in Britain though and last we knew there was one other family in Ireland with the name.

It's a dutch name and fairly uncommon even over there.

chickencurryfor7 Fri 08-Mar-13 17:39:00

16423 with my surname... Do I get a sticker for being common!

threesypeesy Fri 08-Mar-13 17:39:02

only 346 of my maden name

17216 of my married name there more common

2beornot Fri 08-Mar-13 17:39:42

270k with my surname.

52 with my maiden name (I'm directly related to them all)

Really wish I hadn't changed!

OpheliasWeepingWillow Fri 08-Mar-13 17:40:55

There are NONE with mine! confused

3579 with my married name, 404 with my shockingly ridiculous maiden name.

24291 for my maiden name, married name means I am a genuine rarity smile

1080 with my surname and 672 in 1881 census.

354 with my name, 2176 with my maiden name. Would explain why people find it so hard to spell.

MrsHoarder Fri 08-Mar-13 17:43:27

My surname is ranked one below my maiden name. Both top ten. My forename is also very common for my age group.

Needless to say I am rather difficult to find using a web search.

lurkedtoolong Fri 08-Mar-13 17:43:34

1051 with my surname

15798 with my maiden name.

Clearly I've become less common since getting married. Trust me - in more ways than one.

TallyGrenshall Fri 08-Mar-13 17:43:54

None listed in the Uk!

Dunno how thought because I have traced my family back to 1880's and whilst not common by any stretch, it's been around for yonks!

Still18atheart Fri 08-Mar-13 17:44:55

590 with my surname

14447 with my surname. Mine is the same as a certain toy store. If spelt the other way it would no doubt be millions grin

skratta Fri 08-Mar-13 17:45:58

384 of my married surname!

They said they have no knowledge of my maiden name as none have been recorded in the UK! I don't know if that just means currently, or in the past too. It's a Swedish name and rare even then as its a a Sami (Laplander) name (Parmryd).

TooYappy Fri 08-Mar-13 17:46:25

16160 married

3578 maiden

N/A for my current surname, 3098 for my maiden name (would be even more if it included Ireland)

Floggingmolly Fri 08-Mar-13 17:47:30

18086! I've never met anyone else with my surname, always assumed it was very unusual but it's as common as muck! confused

over 107,000 with my married name - common as muck!

Adversecamber Fri 08-Mar-13 17:47:44

DH name is currently 1226 people
My name is N/A currently and had the grand number of 1 in 1881.

Overthehillmum Fri 08-Mar-13 17:48:08

4410 with maiden name, 30 with married name, we are related to at least 20 of them!

ClayDavis Fri 08-Mar-13 17:48:10

0 with my surname, although I know 2 other than me. First name's common as muck though.

Well over 80 thousand. smile

None for DH's.

It always amazes me that, so far as I know, I am the only person in my area of study with my name (first and second are both common), as I know people with much less common names who've had to use a middle initial in order to differentiate themselves from older colleagues in the same field.

ginmakesitallok Fri 08-Mar-13 17:49:01

109 of mine, none of do and the kids'

Naoko Fri 08-Mar-13 17:49:26

None it knows of, which doesn't surprise me because I'm not British and it's very rare even back home. Every person I've ever met at home with my surname has, upon investigation of cousins/second cousins/great grandparents turned out to be related to me.

Oh, and despite my name being common as muck, I still get asked to spell it on a regular basis. confused

Skang Fri 08-Mar-13 17:49:50

29594 with my married name. 40485 with my maiden name.

Common as muck!

Areyoumadorisitme Fri 08-Mar-13 17:50:22

None for current name (although 4 of us live in this house!), 270 for my maiden name, 480 for DH's pre-marriage name so hyphenating them would put us as rare!

Therefore I am not common, no matter what you think of my table manners grin

MomaP Fri 08-Mar-13 17:50:33

756 people in the UK have my surname.

Llanbobl Fri 08-Mar-13 17:51:27

If I use my current surname (was married name but now divorced) it is 5317

If I use my maiden name it is 440

If I use the name on my birth certificate it is 84103 (common Welsh surname)

So I can be relatively rare or as ubiquitous as airsmile

Locketjuice Fri 08-Mar-13 17:51:34

19511 shock

MrsWinklepicker Fri 08-Mar-13 17:51:58

Maiden name is top 200, married name is not even on the list, I know it's uncommon, but there are at least 15 of us...

motherinferior Fri 08-Mar-13 17:52:04

None with mine. Nine in 1881, most of whom were my Swedish relatives.

PatTheHammer Fri 08-Mar-13 17:52:44

138466

10th most common in UK and 2nd in the US

Common as muck!

MissMilliment Fri 08-Mar-13 17:53:28

Over 11,000 with my real name, none with my Mumsnet name - think I might adopt it as my real name and be a bit more interesting and unique grin

MatureUniStudent Fri 08-Mar-13 17:53:38

N/A for my name now but 6 in 1881!

YouHeardTheManTubbs Fri 08-Mar-13 17:54:24

202990 with my married name and apparently none with my maiden name but my whole family are in the UK so there's at least a few

carabos Fri 08-Mar-13 17:54:32

Nearly 44 000 with my married name (top 100), no data at all for my maiden name - nearly extinct grin. I know there are a few of us, we're all related and most of us are female, which accounts for why the numbers are too low to register as we marry ourselves out of the name.

gindrinker Fri 08-Mar-13 17:55:24

252 out of 60m
We could all fit on the London eye at the same time.

MissAnnersley Fri 08-Mar-13 17:55:25

1117 with my surname.

AgnesAndTheOthers Fri 08-Mar-13 17:55:33

254 in the UK.

399 in the US, which makes my cousin 1 in a million apparently!

ATouchOfStuffing Fri 08-Mar-13 17:55:41

658 in UK. They have the origin completely wrong though! We are Dutch, not Punjabi!

KirstyJC Fri 08-Mar-13 17:56:00

There are 10425 in the UK with my married name, but it says NONE with my maiden name. Bit odd that, since my brother, Dad, and niece all have that name still so there's at least 3 of them. Apparently there were 46 with it in 1881.

Not sure how accurate this is now....

I do prefer the maiden name but it's a bugger to spell, and I got fed up with correcting people. My current name might be common but people can at least spell it!

145th 32000 with my surname

No-one with my maiden surname

751 with my name, but only 161 in the USA so I would be very unusual there!

BertieBotts Fri 08-Mar-13 17:56:15

3643

294 with my name as it will be when I'm married.

How come then I'm the one with the small family and DP has a small army he wants to invite to the wedding? hmm

PatriciaHolm Fri 08-Mar-13 17:57:07

Hm. Nobody has my maiden name, which is clearly impossible, as I know around 100 people do....

KissMyGrits Fri 08-Mar-13 17:57:25

1658 with maiden name

They have no data for my married name it says 'Congratulations, you are a genuine rarity, at least in the UK'

Good to know!

SwedishEdith Fri 08-Mar-13 18:01:07

DP and I have consecutive names - popular but not overly-so. How weird!

starsandunicorns Fri 08-Mar-13 18:01:23

I got N/A ( due to being soo low number) know only parents and me with my surname but in 1881 there were 24

BertieBotts Fri 08-Mar-13 18:02:09

'N/A' indicates that we don't have data for this name in that country or time (usually because it's quite uncommon there and our stats don't go down that far). It doesn't mean that there's no-one there with that name at all!

itsblackoveryonderhill Fri 08-Mar-13 18:02:36

3201 with my maiden name and I'm N/A for my married name. I'm not applicable, but I know I'm here, unless we do truely live in 'matrix' ala Keanu Reeves! shock

None shock.

Now wondering if I actually exist.

my old married name is not listed!

maiden name has 4857 of us in UK

current married name 5315 of us...

2,601 so not too common but 0 for OHs name which is odd because there's LOADS of them!!

MrsHoarder Fri 08-Mar-13 18:03:42

LRD one of the reasons* why I took DH's name was because I was sick of being asked which of the two very common spellings of my very common surname I used.

* This reason was right at the bottom of the pros list.

Ahhh, maybe we have the same name, MrsH. I don't really have that option as it's relatively easy to spell my name whereas DH's is a total bugger.

JollyYellowGiant Fri 08-Mar-13 18:07:45

37066 - maiden
4874 - married

So I've got rarer!

NinaHeart Fri 08-Mar-13 18:08:23

Me me me....and only me! Hurrah I knew I was unique!
(am inordinately proud of my name!)

None with mine either. Do I exist?

SparkleSoiree Fri 08-Mar-13 18:08:37

In not listed, another rarity.

WorkingtoohardMama Fri 08-Mar-13 18:08:59

46005 with my maiden name apparently none with my married name, which is odd as I know at least 7!!

poshme Fri 08-Mar-13 18:11:20

Im a rarity- they can't find any record of my name at all. I do have a strange name, but there are at least 100 people in my family with my name so you'd think I would be listed.
Makes me dubious about how accurate it is.

fuckwittery Fri 08-Mar-13 18:11:28

My maiden name is not listed (didn't think it would be)
11,279 of my married name

FirstTimeForEverything Fri 08-Mar-13 18:18:31

Message withdrawn at poster's request.

6984 in the UK with my married name - over 43,000 in the USA which is where DH is from, though. 6498 with my maiden name.

Jux Fri 08-Mar-13 18:30:24

Married name is 778. Maiden name is 514897. Mum's maiden name is 122.

So, mum was vair posh, married a commoner and I'm trying to claw my way up again grin

I went from common to rare, over 27000 with my maiden name and only 62 with my married name.

Jux Fri 08-Mar-13 18:36:25

Friend just been round. According to that site, he doesn't exist. Clearly, he has defied the laws of physics and beamed in from afar.

thegreylady Fri 08-Mar-13 18:39:02

152 in UK with mine and 690 in USA

spiderlight Fri 08-Mar-13 18:40:19

A mere 270138. Third most common in the UK.

761 with my married name 1870 with my maiden name.

harbinger Fri 08-Mar-13 18:42:45

I've got N/A for both married and maiden name.

I know loads of people with my maiden name. Why aren't they showing up?

littlewhitebag Fri 08-Mar-13 18:43:03

Current surname ranked 29 - pretty common. Maiden name 205. - fairly common. Common as muck me!

398 married, 1116 maiden name.

DH is jubilant - he always said his surname was rarer than mine

TheDeadlyDonkey Fri 08-Mar-13 18:45:09

Apparently none with my maiden name, although I definitely know of several other people in my family with the same name.

MrsJohnDeere Fri 08-Mar-13 18:45:10

I am one of close to 40,000.

Was one of 132 with my maiden name. I much prefer being common because everyone can spell it first time.

KitCat26 Fri 08-Mar-13 18:46:06

Maiden name: unlisted. There are at least 4 though (immediate family). And there are at least 100 on the 1911 census so I suspect we haven't all died out.

Married name: 125574, the 13th most common in the UK. grin

HormonalHousewife Fri 08-Mar-13 18:46:28

None with my name either confused

Iis a double barrtelled legal made up one

SorrelForbes Fri 08-Mar-13 18:48:09

10088 maiden, 3957 married.

vamosbebe Fri 08-Mar-13 18:49:00

18,662 in UK for my surname. If I'd taken DH's surname when we married...it doesn't exist in UK! Although there were 331 of him in 1881 census! Glad I kept mine though grin

whatkungfuthat Fri 08-Mar-13 18:49:08

11175 with mine. DP and the DC's name is rare though, its says N/A (less than 0.001). Their name is not common the way it is spelled, but if it is spelled the more traditional way its 3346.

QueenOfCats Fri 08-Mar-13 18:49:08

Mine isn't on there!

When I type it in the search it says: "If this is your name: Congratulations, you are a genuine rarity, at least in the UK. Maybe you should try to breed, to avoid the xxxxxxxx family becoming extinct!"

grin

fussychica Fri 08-Mar-13 18:49:36

Common as muck but it is a nicer surname than my relatively rare maiden name.

teatrolley Fri 08-Mar-13 18:50:05

I've gone from under 1,100 to over 39,500 by getting married. DH's family is common.

rezzle Fri 08-Mar-13 18:50:21

21839 with my surname, which is surprising given that I've never met anyone with the same surname! Interestingly it's gone up 335 places since 1881 - I'm guessing due to Irish immigration?
DH's is 23000 so both pretty boring bog standard really.

TheVermiciousKnid Fri 08-Mar-13 18:50:23

Nobody else with my surname. smile [smug] My children have both my surname and my husband's surname, so it's just me with my surname.

piratecat Fri 08-Mar-13 18:51:53

none according to that. i know of two others.

PenguinBear Fri 08-Mar-13 18:54:14

None with mine :-)

None. I'm well rare me. At the last count there are about 7 or 8 of us in England.

chocoluvva Fri 08-Mar-13 18:55:35

Pretty common. Of English stock apparently, which is quite funny as my scottish FIL is a rampant Scottish Nationalist.

goingdownhill Fri 08-Mar-13 18:58:13

575 with my surname. Though my maiden name is much more common smile.

Wincher Fri 08-Mar-13 18:58:21

SPs Fanjo that was my maiden name! No one could ever pronounce it... was glad to change. Are you from NI.?

ThePskettiIncident Fri 08-Mar-13 18:58:22

About 1000 in England. Only 100 in Australia... They are all my family smile.

There are three towns in England with my surname, and a Great War memorial in one lists about 30 of my relatives. So sad.

None with my maiden name but I know I shared it with 5 other people, my Mum, Aunt, Uncle, Cousin and his wife.

Married name 293.

Talkinpeace Fri 08-Mar-13 19:02:52

just checked my name and then a couple of unusual ones.
That site has errors.
it lists one of my client's names as not existing in the UK and yet he, his two ex wives, his three kids and his brother all have that name ....

hugoagogo Fri 08-Mar-13 19:03:40

1925 people with my maiden name.

1558 with my married name, That's quite rare! shock No wonder nobody can spell it. grin

Win No I'm English! My dad is Irish though from Southern Ireland. People say it wrong and it annoys me.

giddypants Fri 08-Mar-13 19:04:45

Gggrrrrr no.1 married, maiden name slightly better 101!

OliviaMumsnet (MNHQ) Fri 08-Mar-13 19:08:58

I have made it a link for you OP

HoobleDooble Fri 08-Mar-13 19:09:29

2464 here but only 462 in America. 182,727 with my maiden name though (783,051 in the US), common as muck!

My maiden name:
If this is your name: Congratulations, you are a genuine rarity, at least in the UK. Maybe you should try to breed, to avoid the ..... family becoming extinct!

4967 with dh's surname. Glad I didn't change it after marriage

In uk there's 65110 with my surname. In Australia there's 14145 and in the us there's 177213. So common as muck

WireCatWhore Fri 08-Mar-13 19:29:44

211. Quite rare then!

Will go & do my maiden name...

441 for my maiden name.

InkleWinkle Fri 08-Mar-13 19:31:31

3190 for my married name & only 37 for my maiden name.

MechanicalTheatre Fri 08-Mar-13 19:35:45

2689 here and 1442 in 1881. I have only met one with my surname outside my family I think.

Ooh 396 for my maiden name. Always thought it was common, but now I find I am not quite so common!

ThingummyBob Fri 08-Mar-13 19:42:16

My surname is becoming more common, increase from 5102 to 5275 in the last 130 years.

It is however an everyday common word so I probably beat you all for actual common-ness grin

onthemetro Fri 08-Mar-13 19:43:36

My surname is the 2nd most popular in the UK. My first name is often the most popular baby name...every year, including when I was born so I'm very common! It's good because its hard to Google my name and find me wink

KobayashiMaru Fri 08-Mar-13 19:47:09

97 of us in the UK. In 1881 there were only 6!

GrandPoohBah Fri 08-Mar-13 19:47:55

408 with my married name.

Not enough data on my maiden name. When I checked the UK census last year, there were about 28 of them; AFAIK I am related to all of them.

QOD Fri 08-Mar-13 19:49:29

125574 currently with married name, thought it would be much more

223 with maiden name

656 with maiden name after changing to mums new surname

Very funny though that my DM managed to marry two blokes with weird (and they are weird, not foreign just weird) surnames, but both called same boring ordinary first name, Michael!

MiniTheMinx Fri 08-Mar-13 19:52:10

Just used the search and got

"Sorry, we don't currently have any data for G*******

If this is your name: Congratulations, you are a genuine rarity, at least in the UK. Maybe you should try to breed, to avoid the G******* family becoming extinct!"

I know I'm not alone......confused how very strange.

DameFanny Fri 08-Mar-13 19:57:36

There's three of us, and we're all on the same sofa grin

Lonelynessie Fri 08-Mar-13 19:59:34

138466 for mine, 1857160 in America. No surprises really, but I love my name, very simple but classic.

Lonelynessie Fri 08-Mar-13 20:01:23

However, my soon to be husbands name was not found at all, so very rare indeed.

notnowbernard Fri 08-Mar-13 20:02:44

I'm quite rare (700-odd)

But did a search in my Nans maiden name and it says there are none now and were none in 1881!

Which is bollocks as she was one of 9 and had about a thousand nieces and nephews

So I take the website with a pinch of salt

fluffacloud Fri 08-Mar-13 20:04:14

1446 - I've never met anyone outside of my family with the same name though.

iliketea Fri 08-Mar-13 20:05:43

None with my name - I'm a rarity apparently - along with all the other rarities in this thread!

Manchesterhistorygirl Fri 08-Mar-13 20:05:51

No entires for mine! I actually know that my little family are the only ones in the UK and there's one other family in the USA.

dimdommilpot Fri 08-Mar-13 20:06:58

1684 of my surname. Non of DD and OHs (and his family) apparently!

JuliesSistersCousinsAuntsCat Fri 08-Mar-13 20:11:23

270138 of people with my surname in UK.

1534042 in US. Guess I'm pretty damn common!

AngelWreakinHavoc Fri 08-Mar-13 20:16:55

7828 with my surname.
227 with my Name.
2730 with my soon name to be.

mummytime Fri 08-Mar-13 20:18:39

152 in the UK, 479 in the US (which seems too low for me, from what I know), and 34 in Australia. (Oh but on further inspection there are 584 in the Us with a very very easy spelling mistake.)

DH's is rank 35 in UK and US, and 20 in Australia - very common.

There are 9 people with my surname (that website says none but I know better!).

All of them immediate family. We've had the same surname since the 1600s, but only one boy every generation so the lineage is very small.

BelleDameSansMerci Fri 08-Mar-13 20:21:58

1405 in the UK and, not unexpectedly, more than 9000 in the US. Much more common name there!

I don't thinnk that website is accurate at all.

bruffin Fri 08-Mar-13 20:30:07

1595with my surname and 195 with my maiden name but thats greek and not normal greek spelling.

hiddenhome Fri 08-Mar-13 20:31:24

Okay ladies, there is ONE person with the surname Poo in the UK

Is anybody going to own up to that one? grin

Varya Fri 08-Mar-13 20:31:52

92K in UK with my surname but never met anyone with the same surname apart from rellies.

NotYouAgain Fri 08-Mar-13 20:33:16

21402 with my surname

So glad I changed back after my divorce, otherwise we'd be 1 down :D

zippy539 Fri 08-Mar-13 20:35:34

1090 with my maiden name (that I still use). 10844 with my married name.

NotYouAgain Fri 08-Mar-13 20:37:09

grin blush

lisa1968 Fri 08-Mar-13 20:37:27

514897-I'm top of the list! LOL!!!!

stormforce10 Fri 08-Mar-13 20:38:12

My name is common. However my mum remarried a man with an unusual but not foreign name. I put her namei n and got this message:

Sorry, we don't currently have any data for XXXXX.

If this is your name: Congratulations, you are a genuine rarity, at least in the UK. Maybe you should try to breed, to avoid the XXXXX family becoming extinct!

lisa1968 Fri 08-Mar-13 20:38:55

I wouldn't say common-popular is better smile

BikeRunSki Fri 08-Mar-13 20:39:54

1834 with my maiden name, 3171st ranking.

Nearly 100, 000 with my 32nd ranked married name.

I must have spelt my name out several times a day for 30 years. I love my boring, English, occupational surname.

mummytime Fri 08-Mar-13 20:41:21

It doesn't have my friends name! Thats at least 20 people I'd guess they haven't counted.

Hulababy Fri 08-Mar-13 20:44:04

I've traced my maiden name back to 1775 so far; I can't see how the site can say my name is unique!

Twinklestarstwinklestars Fri 08-Mar-13 20:45:39

My surname isn't on there, there are definitely 7 of us now.

6326 others but only one Flaty: is that a bit common?

GirlOutNumbered Fri 08-Mar-13 20:48:25

1439 with my maiden name and 899 with married.

Although the name that every hears when I say my name down the phone has 44155, that explains it a bit.

yaimee Fri 08-Mar-13 20:51:08

Nome for my surname! I'm a genuine rarity apparently! The site suggests I should breed to avoid my name dying out!

NightmareMoon Fri 08-Mar-13 20:52:08

None hmm

Delayingtactic Fri 08-Mar-13 20:52:25

43000 in the UK but only 7000 in Australia for married name. Over 100,000 for maiden name!

mummybare Fri 08-Mar-13 20:52:48

Not listed. Hmmm... There are at least 8 of us.

Raahh Fri 08-Mar-13 20:53:16

My married surname says 2- but I know there are at least 3 other adults with the namegrin There are 3625 in the US though(it's a French Canadian name originally, and one of the commonest names there)

There are 117215 of my maiden name, ranked 17th in the uk.

FoxyRevenger Fri 08-Mar-13 20:54:16

There are no records for my name. As far as I know there are 12 of us.

youmaycallmeSSP Fri 08-Mar-13 20:55:15

575 people with my maiden name in the UK.

58 people with my married name in the UK.

Must get butler...

Dereksmalls Fri 08-Mar-13 20:56:21

No one apparently!

Schooldidi Fri 08-Mar-13 20:57:17

2840 with mine and dd1's surname.

1560 with dp and dd2's surname.

There was me thinking his name was more common than mine, it must just be a regional thing.

PointeShoes Fri 08-Mar-13 20:57:34

1962 people in uk currently. Pretty rare name I never hear anyone else with it.

If I get married that name would be 514897!

Flojobunny Fri 08-Mar-13 20:58:43

10,005 with mine and rank 597.

Flojobunny Fri 08-Mar-13 20:59:32

I had no idea mine was so common!

4106 with my married name, 3993 with my maiden name.
I knew DH was common than me! grin

Gracelo Fri 08-Mar-13 21:04:42

My name is also too rare but supposedly there were 21 people with my name in 1881.

Weissdorn Fri 08-Mar-13 21:04:45

I get N/A for my maiden name? It is unusual but there's definitely 10 of us and I've heard of maximum one or two others.

There are 176 in the US and only 9 in Australia.

I also get N/A for my married name but there were 20 in the 1881 census.

Am I the most unusual? smile

My married name is the 7th most popular! 138466!

My maiden name there is only 268 people in the country with that name.

LemonBreeland Fri 08-Mar-13 21:05:18

Only 736 of my maiden name.

3401 of my name now, knew it would be more popular as it's a Scottish clan name.

DonnaRoll Fri 08-Mar-13 21:05:50

My maiden surname isn't on the list. There are at least 7 people I know who still use it.

LemonBreeland Fri 08-Mar-13 21:06:06

Wow Mums maiden name is 43208!

Oops, misread. We are ranked 10th, on the front page 7th. I guess that means most popular on that website?

Softlysoftly Fri 08-Mar-13 21:07:31

Ha it's true the forriners are taking over - wanted to channel East meets West but may risk my first deletion if I wrote exactly grin.

My (English) maiden name is very rare, my married (Asian dh) name was unknown in the 1881 census now in the top with squillions of the buggers wink.

TwuntingCrow Fri 08-Mar-13 21:08:53

Wow , no data at all on mine ...

Weissdorn Fri 08-Mar-13 21:08:54

Both my maiden name and married names are forrin, presumably why there is no data....

AngryGnome Fri 08-Mar-13 21:10:54

I like this!

Only 271 one of us with my maiden name (We are declining, there were 432 of us in the 1881 census!)

Apparently there are none of us with my married nameconfused that should reduce the Christmas card list anyway....

MrsDeVere Fri 08-Mar-13 21:11:09

My Maiden name is a N/A because there are so few of us and me and my sister are off the list now. I expect I am related to the others.

My married name = there are 143 of us and I have four living children plus me and my OH so that accounts for 6 of them! He has four brothers and but I think only 2 of his seven sisters use the name. Not sure how many of the 30 + nieces and nephews have the name. I would think that that one family make up at least 30 of that 143 though shock

v.interesting.

MrsDeVere Fri 08-Mar-13 21:15:38

So the list says that there are no people with my maiden name. I know that isn't true because I have a brother and four uncles and one male cousin. My brother has three children and my cousin has three

With spouses that makes at least 16 confused

It is also a Jewish name albeit not a common one. So why does it say N/A?

PestoFrostissimos Fri 08-Mar-13 21:18:28

None!

HumphreyCobbler Fri 08-Mar-13 21:18:32

I am a genuine rarity too - and there are a fair few of us.

Ihavetopushthepramalot Fri 08-Mar-13 21:20:49

0 with my madien name but 17984 with my current name.
One extreme to the other!

sugaree Fri 08-Mar-13 21:24:11

314 with my married name!!

Rikalaily Fri 08-Mar-13 21:32:54

15442 with my surname

500 with dp's

Geekster Fri 08-Mar-13 21:34:56

66778 with my married name, maiden name, currently none!

249 with my surname. Wish they told you the origin of yur name.

PoppyAmex Fri 08-Mar-13 21:48:05

None in the UK, 2023 in the US and 29 in Oz.

BertieBotts Fri 08-Mar-13 21:49:59

Stairs it looks like there's a tab with origin information on there smile

You are quite right- had totally missed that! Thank you Bertie

oldraver Fri 08-Mar-13 22:08:16

908 in England mostly in Yorkshire I reckon and only 143 in America..... most of whom seemed to of written to my DB grin

OH name has 460....I reckon we know half of them

Iwillorderthefood Fri 08-Mar-13 22:12:27

Maiden name 240 in the UK.

There is no data available for my married name.

TheCatIsUpTheDuff Fri 08-Mar-13 22:13:08

99 with my married name plus 2 in Australia - that'll be DH's uncle and auntie then.
156 with my maiden name. I'm surprised, I thought that was rarer.

KatoPotato Fri 08-Mar-13 22:15:50

89! How unique!

Very, very common!

16,492 married name

58,923 with maiden name!!!!

redwellybluewelly Fri 08-Mar-13 22:17:38

Apparently I'm the only one. But there are seven others I know of so methinks their database is flawed

92 with my maiden name
23000 with my married name

BearFrills Fri 08-Mar-13 22:20:06

Same here redwelly, DH has the same name plus his dad, etc so I can't be the only one! Unless they've inflicted this surname on me as a joke and their real surname is actually Smith or Johnson or the like.

74722 with my maiden name though!

ArtVandelay Fri 08-Mar-13 22:24:46

22600 people have my old surname but I am the only person with my current surname.

wonkylegs Fri 08-Mar-13 22:27:58

Maiden name - it's not on there, but we believe that we may be the last of our branch of the family so not surprised. (each generation only having 1 child, each a boy, my generation broke this cycle but no next generation as of yet)
Married name - 2798, so much more common.

pourmeanotherglass Fri 08-Mar-13 22:31:30

born really common (96061, Hill)

still quite common now I'm married (4520)

Yoghurty Fri 08-Mar-13 22:44:47

Just searched my surname and got this response

'Search for 'Yoghurty's surname'

Sorry, we don't currently have any data for 'Yoghurty's surname'.

If this is your name: Congratulations, you are a genuine rarity, at least in the UK. Maybe you should try to breed, to avoid the 'Yoghurty' family becoming extinct!

I know this can't be accurate as where I'm from in the West country there are more than just me!

Trazzletoes Fri 08-Mar-13 22:49:42

Yoghurty I got that message for my maiden name AND my married name!

<super-rare>

RozziRaspberry Fri 08-Mar-13 23:05:51

44191 with my maiden name and 0 with my married name

GreatGretzky Fri 08-Mar-13 23:13:41

6679 with my maiden name and 1867 with my married name. Thought it'd be the other way round, have met a couple of people with my married surname but can't remember meeting anyone outside the family with my maiden name!

LittleBoxes Fri 08-Mar-13 23:20:35

0 for my pre-marriage name (an unusual spelling of an unusual and quite regional name). 30,000-something for my married name.

Which kind of explains why I changed it - I got so sick of spelling it out all the time!

Lewisfan Fri 08-Mar-13 23:22:30

104 per million with my surname

HerLordship Fri 08-Mar-13 23:26:05

Over 100,000 with my surname. I'm not surprised though. Every time I watch anything on telly I can guarantee at the end credits there will be at least one actor/production crew person with our surname. I love it though. I grew up with a very unusual surname, so it's nice to have one that people don't say 'eh?' to when I say it!!

Portofino Fri 08-Mar-13 23:26:18

824 with my maiden name - and apparently we are dying out. Eek.

HerLordship Fri 08-Mar-13 23:27:15

My maiden name has only 200 in the UK

'Congratulations, you are a genuine rarity, at least in the UK. Maybe you should try to breed, to avoid the **** family becoming extinct!'

janji Fri 08-Mar-13 23:35:17

104000 with my married name!!! No one with my maiden name. Have clearly married into common stock!

luanmahi Fri 08-Mar-13 23:54:41

96061 with my maiden name
10124 with my married name

Both fairly common

Maryz Fri 08-Mar-13 23:58:00

More than 60,000 of mine.

I'm as common as muck.

SoldAtAuction Sat 09-Mar-13 03:45:25

20 people with my last name, none In the older census.

40,000 ish with my maiden name and 4000 ish with my married name grin
Guess were not known as "The Great Clan Ross" for nothing grin

IncognitoIsMyFavouriteWord Sat 09-Mar-13 05:13:46

There's 16998 of us.

That doesn't shock me I knew we were middle of the road when it came to how popular we are.

Eebahgum Sat 09-Mar-13 05:27:03

30540 apparently. And yet a different spelling - which people ALWAYs try to use when working my name - has about 450.

CuthbertDibble Sat 09-Mar-13 07:29:25

64910 with my maiden name

1028 with my married name

colleysmill Sat 09-Mar-13 07:42:52

Err none of my married name but I know theres Atleast 20 in the extended family and its not that unusual. My maiden name very common though

My mothers maiden name was very unusual so not surprised its not listed.

1332

They can't find any details on DPs surname. It says you should breed so your surname doesn't become extinct.

juneau Sat 09-Mar-13 07:55:38

11674 with my married surname
30210 with my maiden name

Jemimapuddleduk Sat 09-Mar-13 07:56:49

5194 of my married name but my maiden name (which is unusual) isn't there even though there are at least 10 of them!

Whatdoiknowanyway Sat 09-Mar-13 07:59:54

80,000 for maiden name, 35,000 for married name.

Lovecat Sat 09-Mar-13 08:06:08

10,093 for married name - given I've never come across another one outside immediate family in RL, they must all be hidden away somewhere else!

And weirdly, only 4,445 of my maiden name, and I'm always meeting/seeing people with that name (although there are 40,724 of them in the US so they must've all emigrated at some point!)

NormaStanleyFletcher Sat 09-Mar-13 08:08:30

Only 276 with my surname. Less in the US. Less in Australia. I am pretty sure that I am the only one in the world with my first name - surname combination.

bulletproofgerbil Sat 09-Mar-13 08:16:19

oooh only 145 in uk. And I've got a rareish blood group. V V special me smile

catgirl1976 Sat 09-Mar-13 08:19:47

Vair common at 63,000

401 in UK. 4 in 1881. I guess the family have been busy the last 130 years grin

devonsmummy Sat 09-Mar-13 08:23:47

749 with my surname so quite rare

devonsmummy Sat 09-Mar-13 08:25:42

72013 with my maiden name
And over 400,000 with my last married name

Kveta Sat 09-Mar-13 08:29:45

11195 of my maiden name, none of my married name - but we never meet others with our surname, unless they are relatives! I think that me, DH, DS, and DD are the only 4 of our surname in the UK.

I was searching pubmed recently for something and happened to put my married name in, to see if one of my papers had had my name corrected on it (as co-authors WILL NOT spell it correctly) - anyway, I found a couple of papers on plant biology by another person with my surname, and told DH that maybe there are others in the world, not just his cousins! Anyway, it turned out to just be one of his cousins who I haven't met yet grin

sunnyshine Sat 09-Mar-13 13:32:47

1333 with my maiden no and no data. For my married name!! This is what it says

If this is your name: Congratulations, you are a genuine rarity, at least in the UK. Maybe you should try to breed, to avoid the (insert my name) family becoming extinct!

If you know something of the origin of this name, why not start a thread about it on the forum - if we get enough information, we may be able to add it to the main site eventually.

NandH Sat 09-Mar-13 13:36:31

11537!!!! I didn't think my surname was that common at all

ladymalfoy Sat 09-Mar-13 15:31:09

Mine isn't even on there!

JustGiveMeFiveMinutes Sat 09-Mar-13 15:38:01

152. I didn't realise how rare it is.

DisappointedHorse Sat 09-Mar-13 15:41:35

180 with our name. That explains all the variations I get called which are wrong!

BabyRoger Sat 09-Mar-13 15:45:51

68,000 with married name. Ranked 57. Common as muck!

204 with my maiden name. I am surprised it's that many. I have never met anyone with my maiden name that isn't me, my brother, uncle, cousin or dad!

lljkk Sat 09-Mar-13 18:42:59

11 in the UK which astounds me (I was predicting 1 or 2).
Less than 0.001% in UK or my native country.

TheDemonShedMaster Sat 09-Mar-13 19:40:30

Apparently, I am a genuine rarity!

PuppyMonkey Sat 09-Mar-13 19:46:41

My surname is Robinson and apparently it's not in the top 100. confused

There are more people inBritain called Pinegar than Robinson? Really? hmm

Sixparrotspullingupcarrots Sat 09-Mar-13 19:50:01

347 with my maiden name.
0 with my married name (is forrin and actually is a nickname taken on as a surname when someone migrated).

247515 with my surname.
105032 with my OH's.

At least both our Christian names are very unusual.

HecateWhoopass Sat 09-Mar-13 19:52:47

my married name " Search for 'X'

Sorry, we don't currently have any data for x.

If this is your name: Congratulations, you are a genuine rarity, at least in the UK. Maybe you should try to breed, to avoid the X family becoming extinct!

If you know something of the origin of this name, why not start a thread about it on the forum - if we get enough information, we may be able to add it to the main site eventually. "

I am not surprised. It's a forrin name. grin

My maiden name - - 48582
So fairly common then.

FrankWippery Sat 09-Mar-13 19:56:18

Married name: 39,126
Maiden name: apparently none, which is bollocks as there are at least 5, who are my cousins, aunt and uncle.

CwtchesAndCuddles Sat 09-Mar-13 20:02:25

Married name 1,300
Maiden name 12,874

KenDoddsDadsDog Sat 09-Mar-13 20:06:27

1338 and only 14 in 1881 - Irish immigrants !
None of my maiden name - end of the line

HokeyCokeyPigInAPokey Sat 09-Mar-13 20:06:53

Only 98, my married name is very unusual in the u.k and is normally found in Grenada and Barbados.

ProlificWillyBreeder Sat 09-Mar-13 20:07:21

759 does mean I'm rare?

ProlificWillyBreeder Sat 09-Mar-13 20:07:29

*that

Svanhvitr Sat 09-Mar-13 20:21:55

Apparently there are 0 people with my surname in the UK. But what about me, eh? There were 3 of us in 1881!

Bumply Sat 09-Mar-13 20:31:38

0 in the database which I was expecting as only others are my siblings or cousins a few times removed.
In South Africa its quite common though.

Lizzylou Sat 09-Mar-13 20:54:33

Maiden name 12252

Married surname, none.

Which is odd because I know us and PIL at least share the same surname, it is quite rare in it's spelling though, but not that rare.

offmystomachstillis Sat 09-Mar-13 21:11:01

889 people with the same surname as me - 5791 most common? according to that list

ToTeachOrNotToTeach Sat 09-Mar-13 21:16:17

3 in 1881 but apparently none now. There' definitely us 2....

ChaoticisasChaoticdoes Wed 13-Mar-13 14:41:16

9767 in the UK.
76707 in the US.
2045 in Australia.

I am another genuine rarity... There are a surprisingly large number of us! I have already bred with two DD's so not much use am I

Quite a few with my married name (over 30 000) but it says no record of my maiden surname. I know my maiden surname is rare, but having researched my family tree I reckon there would be about 80 or 90 people with the name in the uk (and a few in Australia).

TomDudgeon Wed 13-Mar-13 16:25:25

78842 for my married name
N/a for my maiden name

I knew I was classier than dh

VikingLady Wed 13-Mar-13 17:14:08

Maiden name: 33351
Now: 3. Me, DH and DD (double barrelled)

grendel Wed 13-Mar-13 17:53:23

This is really interesting.
Apparently only 58 people in the UK share my married name (and it's a fine olde Englishe surname, not a forrin import) and I know 12% of them personally!

Whereas my maiden name is shared by 24,892 people. Which is why we use it whenever we need to book anything over the phone - at least it is easy to spell!

ImpYCelyn Wed 13-Mar-13 18:06:27

0 with my married name - but then it's French so not surprising.

78004 with my maiden name.

tb Wed 13-Mar-13 18:58:14

The only unusual surname I could think of to look up was Shufflebottom - yes, it's a real one. There was one at school, and their dad was a vicar. So, do any of you answer to Ms Shufflebottom in real life?

Soditall Wed 13-Mar-13 19:53:00

0 with my maiden name and married name grin
