Seth McFarlane at the Oscars "We saw your boobs"

Bogeyface Tue 26-Feb-13 11:46:08

Only just seen this but OMG it is funny!

I dont care if it was editting, but Charlize Therons reaction was brilliant! grin

And no, I don't think its sexist, despite what the papers say.

mrsjay Tue 26-Feb-13 11:47:04

I havnt watched it yet I recorded it I think seth offended a lot of the 'stars' grin

Pootles2010 Tue 26-Feb-13 11:48:16

I think its more that several of those scenes were rape scenes.

mrsjay Tue 26-Feb-13 11:48:19

these actors take themselves far to seriously IMO and need to just chill out and have a laugh they make films they are not down the Pit grin

Bogeyface Tue 26-Feb-13 11:48:49

Well according to what I read it was pre-recorded and their reactions were staged, which makes me a bad person as I hoped they were genuine grin

LittleEdie Tue 26-Feb-13 11:50:00

I felt embarrassed watching it. I assume his intention was to shock - it worked.

mrsjay Tue 26-Feb-13 11:50:38

aww was it <dissapointed> i love seth and was grateful it wasnt Ricky gervais who was hosting , although I think hollywood fell out with him as he was a bit to near the knuckle

Pootles2010 Tue 26-Feb-13 11:52:04

Also the sex-joke about a 9 year old was vile. I love family guy but didn't like this at all.

Bogeyface Tue 26-Feb-13 11:54:11

Didnt see the sex-joke, which would be awful sad

mrsjay Tue 26-Feb-13 11:54:20

I havnt seen it so cant comment eek@ a 9yrold sex joke

TheElephantIsADaintyBird Tue 26-Feb-13 11:56:33

I cringed the whole way through

PandaWatch Tue 26-Feb-13 11:57:06

I'm amazed they allowed him to host the Oscars given the snooty stance the organisers usually take about the awards (like trying to ban Sacha Baron Cohen last year - that nicely backfired grin).

I do love Family Guy and American Dad but there's something a little too smug and self-satisfied about it at times, which seems to emanate from SMcF himself, and it's nowhere near as clever as it thinks it is but they have had some great musical numbers so I might have to check the song out!

Pagwatch Tue 26-Feb-13 11:57:11

Oh dear lord!
The stars reactions were part of the 'joke'
Any numpty can see they were prerecorded because Charlize Theron etc are wearing completely different dresses. Did anyone really think they stony glares were real confused

I agree with Mark Kermode who said it was crass and unfunny. But for gods sake, how can anyone have not spotted that that actors were part of the sketch?

scaevola Tue 26-Feb-13 11:57:53

I didn't like this.

It seems wrong, on the night when acting and film excellence is celebrated, to make puerile jokes about just one sex's body parts.

I wouldn't have minded if verse two had been "we saw your bum" about male actors.

PandaWatch Tue 26-Feb-13 12:00:27

"I wouldn't have minded if verse two had been "we saw your bum" about male actors."

Someone needs to make a parody of the song along these lines!!

mrsjay Tue 26-Feb-13 12:01:56

I was going to watch it later but Im goign to watch it now

Bogeyface Tue 26-Feb-13 12:02:32

I dont take that much notice of "who are you wearing" and just saw this. I will make sure I study the Oscar outfits before posting again hmm

Bogeyface Tue 26-Feb-13 12:03:56

Oh and I didnt spot it because it was on as I was doing something else, and just caught bits of it.

Tee2072 Tue 26-Feb-13 12:04:45

It's sexiest misogynistic crap that isn't funny.

Also, there wasn't just a sex joke about Quvenzhané Wallis. The Onion also called her a cunt in a, supposedly, funny and satirical Tweet. She's 9.

Pagwatch Tue 26-Feb-13 12:07:13

The thing that struck me as I watched it was that it fell pretty flat.
The whole premis was Captain Kirk coming back from the future to warn that the show would be so controversial that it would be the end of the Oscars.
Then he illustrates that with a sniggery section about boobs.
Really?

It does sit with the stats though that the average winner of the male actor in a lead role is over forty. Only a quarter of female actors in a lead role are that age - they are usually in their 20s. And something like 70% of dialogue in Hollywood films is spoken by men.

HighBrows Tue 26-Feb-13 12:10:02

Tee2027 I agree it was sexiest and it wasn't funny.
I cringed for the most part especially when lovely Sally Field and Seth got off together. Who gave him the gig? I couldn't bare to look at the 'joke' about the 9 year old.

Pagwatch Tue 26-Feb-13 12:11:48

hmm indeed.

If the hilarious thing about it was Charlize Therons reaction, but that was fake - is it still hilarious?

Pagwatch Tue 26-Feb-13 12:14:48

....because its not outrageous if the actors are all in on it.
So it's just a bloke saying boobs a lot.
I am not offended or outraged. It's just really lame isn't it? Or is it me?

Don't know about the other stuff. Only watched a few highlights.

Nancy66 Tue 26-Feb-13 12:16:49

I 'get' the joke ....but I still thinking referencing a film about a woman who was gang raped (The accused) is pretty poor.

PandaWatch Tue 26-Feb-13 12:20:04

"I 'get' the joke ....but I still thinking referencing a film about a woman who was gang raped (The accused) is pretty poor."

shock

Don't want to watch it at all now. That's horrible.

Tee2072 Tue 26-Feb-13 12:21:28

Even if it wasn't sexist, it wasn't funny!

And certainly the 'jokes' about Quvenzhané Wallis weren't funny. The Onion even apologized for their bit.

HighBrows Tue 26-Feb-13 12:21:42

Whether the actors were in on the joke is not the point because either way it was at best a lame joke and at worst a sexiest crap joke. The fact that 'we saw your boobs' Jodi Foster in the Accused, is terrible really especially as that movie is about rape. The same applies to Halle Berry, referencing Monster, that film is just as grim.

Nope. Not funny in the slightest.

Puerile, misogynistic assholery from a puerile misogynistic asshole.

I'd try to raise my standards for humour if I were you.

MarmaladeTwatkins Tue 26-Feb-13 12:24:29

I thought he lacked the panache to host the Oscars. All of his jokes were based around taking the piss out of women. Came across as a bit of a twat.

Meh.

Some people found it funny, some people didn't. Whoever asked him to host the Oscars must have known his brand of humor from Family Guy, American Dad and Ted.

What makes me laugh may not make you laugh. Comedy is so diverse, its subjective. And in my very humble opinion should't be censored.

Pootles2010 Tue 26-Feb-13 13:51:34

I don't think anyone's suggesting censorship, just saying that we think it was vile misogynistic unfunny shit. No one's suggested banning him/the show.

lolaflores Tue 26-Feb-13 14:03:49

Who knew, boobs still fucking funny! Cocks not so...

I don't think it should be censored.

But I reserve the right to judge anyone who claims to find it knicker-wettingly hilarious. Same as I judge anyone who claims to find Bernard Manning, Roy Chubby Brown or Jim Davidson funny.

tethersend Tue 26-Feb-13 14:18:58

Hahahahahaha, TITS!!! BOOBS!!!!

I tell you what, he missed a load of them in Schindler's List.

Hahahahah! Ha ha ha.

Ha.

EnjoyResponsibly Tue 26-Feb-13 14:22:50

I really tired not to be po about this, but the references to the Accused were beyond the pale.

I'd like Jack Nicholson to host next year.

Pagwatch Tue 26-Feb-13 14:30:04

Of course the question of whether the actors were in on it or not does not affect whether or not I find it funny.

My query was to the op who had initially found it hilarious because she thought the actors looking horrified/ mortified were genuinely so.
The fact that the whole thing was staged means not only was it not intrinsically funny but it was not subsequently rendered funny by the reaction of the named members of the audience.
So I was curious as to whether anyone who found it funny when it was humiliating film stars still found it funny when it wasn't.
Personally I didn't find it funny either way. I was just asking some who did at the point at which she thought it was boobs + humiliation as opposed to just boobs.

Fillyjonk75 Tue 26-Feb-13 14:36:56

Not keen on American Dad, and Family Guy ranges from making my sides hurt from laughing to cringing horribly at the casual racism/sexism - never quite sure if those are his attitudes or it is making fun of those opinions - a bit like the humour in his presentation, apparently, so it doesn't surprise me.

HannahMumsnet (MNHQ) Tue 26-Feb-13 15:00:49

Hi everyone! We thought you might like to know that a Mumsnet blogger has written a really interesting post on this topic

BOF Tue 26-Feb-13 15:02:42

Can you out that in a link please, Hannah? I can't c&p easily on this device.

AmandaCooper Tue 26-Feb-13 15:10:08
Nancy66 Tue 26-Feb-13 15:16:28

Nope - didn't like the blog. Load of old waffle. Sorry.

Startail Tue 26-Feb-13 15:26:34

Yes the blog is waffle and the Oscar song wasn't faintly funny,
but this is

Bogeyface Tue 26-Feb-13 15:54:43

Jeez. I caught it whilst doing something else and thought the idea was quite amusing. I clearly didnt give it enough thought hmm, and certainly didnt notice the references to certain films (didnt hear the Accused and have never seen the Halle Berry film so no idea that was about rape)

I saw the staged reactions, it amused me, end of.

limitedperiodonly Tue 26-Feb-13 15:55:40

That caught me out brilliantly startail grin I was going: 'Oh I hate blokes who say things like that...'

limitedperiodonly Tue 26-Feb-13 15:58:59

And I agree about the blog and Seth MacFarlane. With one I was shouting: 'Get on with it' and the other: 'Get off'.

LineRunner Tue 26-Feb-13 16:10:51

Ben Elton in a comedy routine (1980s) observed of Benny Hill et al, 'Yeah tits. Fucking hilarious. Tell you what, ladies, maybe that's why you're not getting on in the world. You're too busy laughing at your own fucking tits.'

It was quite witty at the time.

AmberSocks Tue 26-Feb-13 16:11:02

i love him and i think it was funny,i also dont think it was sexist.

MurielTheActor Tue 26-Feb-13 16:48:15

All a little hypocritical I feel when the stars (sorry - actors) are paraded on the Red Carpet like a beauty pageant (including the men).
Not, tell me about the film you've been in and the work you've done but 'Who are you wearing?'

EnjoyResponsibly Tue 26-Feb-13 16:58:07

Christ, that blog is so dull.

Hannahmumsnet why would you do that to us? Are we being punished?

Fillyjonk75 Tue 26-Feb-13 16:59:26

I thought the blog article was well written. I haven't read the rest of the blog.

mrsjay Tue 26-Feb-13 17:00:15

well I watched the highlights this afternoon what a pile of guff that was and seth I do love you but god sake dont do it again hmm and they didnt show the musical numbers I was looking forward too had to you tube those

mrsjay Tue 26-Feb-13 17:01:18

oh and we saw your boobs couldve been silly and childish AND FUNNY is was just URGH

ElephantsAndMiasmas Tue 26-Feb-13 17:25:13

Wow what a sexist load of shit (unsurprisingly). It's not funny and there was no "man" verse because seeing a guy naked doesn't devalue him at all, but apparently seeing a women naked should embarrass her. It's the same old women sleeping around are whores/men sleeping around are studs hypocrisy and it's boring, ancient and should frankly fuck off. This is the sort of attitude that makes girls kill themselves when a picture sent privately to a boyfriend goes round the school/internet. Ha bleeding ha.

SaladIsMyFriend Tue 26-Feb-13 17:34:40

Not at all funny, and pretty vile considering two of the films referenced in the song are either about rape, or have a very graphic/disturbing rape scene in them.

What a way to put the women in Hollywood back in their place.

On top of all McFarlane's other comments at the Oscars it's depressing stuff.

maisiejoe123 Tue 26-Feb-13 17:56:21

I believe it was staged. Charlie has a white dress on for the awards and a black one when her reaction was filmed.

The thing is - they did show their boobs, but often in upsetting scenes but until I found out that it was staged I did believe their reactions.

I watched the song and failed to see the humour. The stars apparently being in on it makes no difference to me: it just wasn't funny.

GetOrf Tue 26-Feb-13 18:21:22

What bunny said. He is a rather unpleasant individual isn't he (mild). Mind you I cannot stand Family Guy either - really horrible nasty undertone to it.

GirlOutNumbered Tue 26-Feb-13 18:27:17

I never watch award shows as the presenting part of it is normally shit. Looks like this was no exception.
I've not really seen family guy, but I do like to hear Seth sing, he has a great voice.
That blog was rubbish by the way,

Kundry Tue 26-Feb-13 18:45:10

The only bit that was funny was about Kate Winslet who really seems incapable of keeping her clothes on in a movie.

I guess it'll be a long wait fore the song listing how many A-list male star's cocks we've seen.

Why does it matter if Kate Winslet strips in every movie she's in? Its her choice. Targetting a woman for revealing her boobs in a movie or two or three is slut-shaming; its ridiculing a woman for making the choice to show her breasts. Funny? Really??? confused

limitedperiodonly Tue 26-Feb-13 19:05:20

If you're going to have sex you're going to be naked. That's more normal than wearing a bra or clutching a sheet round you. So it could be prurient or it could be realistic.

I watched the TV version of Spartacus last night and I couldn't work out whether one of the actors had a semi or a prosthetic.

Maybe Seth could have made up a little song about that. Or maybe he would have felt humbled.

Fillyjonk75 Tue 26-Feb-13 19:05:55

I agree GetOrf, I find it too negative now.

Lilithmoon Tue 26-Feb-13 19:31:32

That song is so awful. I don't understand how the producers/directors thought it was a good idea.
Really depressed now sad

vamosbebe Tue 26-Feb-13 21:04:39

"Ewan McGregor, we saw you swing in Trainspotting,
Had a good look in The Pillow Book,
Can't think of a willy-rhyme for Velvet Goldmine,
...or Young Adam, but we still saw your cock grin "

*apologies to Ewan McGregor

PretzelTime Tue 26-Feb-13 21:18:40

He insulted all those talented actresses, and women in general. He obviously meant to. He referenced rape scenes and reduced it to seeing boobs.
I'm disgusted by all the misogyny at the Oscars. Especially the shit directed at a freaking 9-year old.
www.buzzfeed.com/hillaryreinsberg/sexist-things-at-the-oscars

Figgygal Tue 26-Feb-13 21:20:50

I hate family guy but thought he did a good job if they wanted more of the same old they should have got old billy crystal in again

And I too was impressed with his singing

CuttedUpPear Tue 26-Feb-13 21:24:22

Disgraceful and another knockback for equality and the end of violence against women.

No, not funny at all.

nilbyname Tue 26-Feb-13 21:41:01

The patriarchy live and direct on our TVs numbing our minds with this insidious SHIT.

Not funny. Not clever.

GetOrf Tue 26-Feb-13 21:52:00

it's the sense that on the biggest night of one of the largest entertainment industries which operates on a global scale, and an event watched by many millions of all cultures they are HAppy to say 'this is who we are. This is what we think of you all'

And women which are considered well respected - women who have been awarded for acting in films have to be seen as finding it funny and having to laugh in order to be seen as part of this industry.

Jodie Foster confessed that she found filming the Accused incredibly gruelling and upsetting. Nice to know that she is reduced to a pair of tits to be slathered over by a ghastly jock. Oh hang on. It's irony. Let's not forget to laugh hmm

PretzelTime Tue 26-Feb-13 22:03:10

Exactly GetOrf. The Oscars is a BIG thing. I assume there is a lot of care going into what sort of messages they want to send out on such a huge event.

plinkyplonks Tue 26-Feb-13 22:21:30

I thought he was really funny. The Academy knew what they were getting when they hired Seth. Lots of people 'offended' - lots of free advertising for the Oscars. It also got lots of people discussing feminism, feeling sorry for the female 'stars' he supposedly ?! offended... not bad for less than 10,000 dollars hosting fee.

Bogeyface Tue 26-Feb-13 23:29:10

Suitably chastised I shall say only this.

AlisonMoyet search my user name, I am not a troll, not nice to troll hunt dear.

Whitewineformeplease Wed 27-Feb-13 00:08:10

Dunno about Jack Nicholson, EnjoyResponsibly, did you see the footage of him perving over Jennifer Lawrence in her post-Oscar interview? Boak.

TheCatInTheHairnet Wed 27-Feb-13 02:31:25

We had kids, dads and mums here literally laughing our heads off when we watched it. We're in the US so were watching it live. We thought it was really funny at the time. However, since then I've had time to reflect and it no longer sits as comfortably with me as it did on Sunday.

I am not sure if that is because of the social commentary or because I am no longer drinking as much wine as I did at our Oscar party..

ScumbagCollegeDropout Wed 27-Feb-13 02:42:56

I love a bit of Schadenfreude, me.

I have been saying for years that Seth MacFarlane is an egotistical, smug, peurile, misogonystic little twat. Most people responded with 'Who?'.

Now the world knows just how much of a smug twunt he is.

So far up his own arse I wish he wasn't able to sing...but sing he does. And it got old real fast in FG.

Smug.

Twat.

Nandocushion Wed 27-Feb-13 03:01:52

Oh god I couldn't stop giggling at the song. And yes, all the actresses they showed had had their reactions pre-recorded (they were all wearing different dresses). That blog MN linked to needs an editor, desperately - couldn't even get past the first paragraph. And someone needs to let her know that we're over all that privilege stuff.

Did anyone actually watch the Oscars programme? There were no "sex jokes" about the 9-year-old. There was a joke about George Clooney being a desperate old perv. The Onion Twitter feed made a disgusting "joke" about the little girl which thankfully they have apologised for.

I think the whole "We saw your boobs" song could very well be taken as a joke on men. As in, exactly the way so many people are taking it: these were actresses playing serious roles, and all the men could take out of it was that there were breasts to be seen. Doesn't that make them laughable and pathetic? Or do we women always have to make ourselves the victims in every single situation?

AlisonMoyet Wed 27-Feb-13 06:30:33

I think you misunderstand the joke. They were discussing when a 9 year old can have sex.

SusieSusieSheep Wed 27-Feb-13 07:00:55

I normally like Seth Macfarlane but I really didn't find this funny at all. Also, the title of the song is the only joke in it, it's not as if he adds any twists or extra jokes in the verses - it reminded me of an eight year old boy laughing at the sight of any body part.

Animation Wed 27-Feb-13 10:14:27

He's not a naturally funny guy though. And his attempt to copy Ricky Gervais type parody came out too mean and unfunny. It's the way you tell em that matters.

Kiriwawa Wed 27-Feb-13 10:17:31

How depressing that so many women find women and young girls being humiliated and degraded like this 'funny'.

I had no idea who Seth McFarlane was and I'm really annoyed that I bought my nephew Family Guy stuff for Christmas. Never again

Goodwordguide Wed 27-Feb-13 10:24:16

Completely utterly agree with getorf - it was lame and pathetic and insulting. Puerile just about begins to describe it.

I can't believe SF gets to host one of the biggest presenting roles and that's all he could come up with - laughing at boobs - really, my 4 year old DS has more subtlety in his humour and he thinks the word 'poo' is funny. Maybe he should host the Oscars.

Goal Wed 27-Feb-13 10:43:47

Alison - No you misunderstood the joke. It referenced that "it will be 16 years until...."given that she is nine this has naff all to do with the age of consent and sex as it references her being the age of 25 I.e a full grown woman. It was a reference to GC going out with younger women, slightly odd ref as though GC does often date younger women they all seem to be fully grown adults I.e his current girlfriend is early thirties. I guess the "joke" wa meant to be about he fact he has had many girlfriends and they are younger than him. Hardly side splitting stuff

Haven't watched it but the idea is terrible.

You think you're a actress? you think you're here celebrating your work? Nah, we don't care about that, we only care about your tits.

Bue Wed 27-Feb-13 12:09:51

Agree with Goal, that joke really wasn't about a nine year old having sex, it was about George Clooney being completely ridiculous in that a 25 year old is too old for him. I actually thought it was amusing (though I can appreciate I probably wouldn't have, were I the girl' mother in the audience!). The rest of his material was pretty crap. The boob song was unfunny and cringeworthy.

BeCool Wed 27-Feb-13 14:16:05

not funny. totally misjudged. And the song was only part of it - quote below from article in New Yorker

" There are many variations on misogyny, and MacFarlane by no means confined himself to a single one. (A Buzzfeed post called “6 Sexist Things That Happened at the Oscars” was revised, in the course of the evening, to “9 Sexist Things.”) “Django Unchained,” he said, was “the story of a man fighting to get back his woman, who has been subjected to unthinkable violence. Or as Chris Brown and Rihanna call it, a date movie.” Relationships are complicated, and it can take a woman more than one attempt to leave an abuser. But if any woman who goes back is told that she has forfeited sympathy and can be written off with mockery—that the whole thing is now an amusing spectacle—then we’ll end up with more dead women. There are surely better things to joke about. Instead, we got a borderline anti-Semitic Teddy bear asking where the post-Oscars orgy would be. The answer was Jack Nicholson’s house; maybe not the same Jack Nicholson house where Roman Polanski raped a girl, but still, not funny."

BeCool Wed 27-Feb-13 14:17:57

Bue do you think the 9 year old Nominee thought it was amusing - of do her feelings not count?

BeCool Wed 27-Feb-13 14:26:04

excellent analysis of some of the clips used in the song here

BigSpork Wed 27-Feb-13 18:34:53

Yes it was a joke about George Clooney having young girlfriends - but it was a joke that made Quvenzhané Wallis, a 9 year old child, a potential sexual object. It doesn't matter that he isn't the butt of the joke, it matters that that is not an appropriate lens to view a child, it is not appropriate to continue to oversexualization of young Black girls by the media, and that a child should not have to go through that for adult's amusements.

Bad enough she was greatly disrespected and had her name disregarded on the entrance to her big night, and sit through the boob song (which included rape scenes based on real women's stories. Essentially mocking real women's trauma and sending the message that these don't matter as long as men get their jokes, she then has to smile through that. I do not get how any of this treatment of a child can be beyond that, especially compared to the treatment of other stars her age and older who have been far more protected.

OptimisticPessimist Wed 27-Feb-13 19:02:51

Seriously, whose first thought when trying to write a joke about a 9 year old child is to reduce them to a sex object? Who even thinks of a child in the context of them going out with a 50 year old man? This is a child who has made an incredible achievement to get an Oscar nomination at such a young age (I haven't seen the film but I'm assuming it must have been a powerful performance to get nominated) and the only thing worthy of comment is her future sexuality?

And in George Clooney's defence, while he may date young women they are always adults and I think it's pretty crap to associate him with a child in such a suggestive manner. But clearly I'm just dull and humourless. hmm

NapaCab Wed 27-Feb-13 21:14:55

Upthread, someone said it might have been funny if they had done a male version of the song too:

Well, for MN-ers delight and for feminist justice, here it is!

We Saw Your Junk

Interestingly, most of these male nude scenes referenced are from comedies, not serious films about sexual violence.

I cringed when I first saw the SMcF song at the Oscars as I just saw a clip of it but once I saw it in context, I 'got' the joke. He was sending up his own childish, frat-boy sense of humour. However, when I think about the fact that a lot of the scenes he references are of rapes or assaults, then that is indeed very creepy.
