Recipe of the week

penguinmum's creamy fish pie: smoky, seasonal fish in a creamy white sauce with grated, rather than mashed, tatties on top - a meal of the highest comfort-food order.

Tell Me Lovely Things About The UK

(25 Posts)
I left England the day before Tony Blair became prime minister. The two events were in no way connected it was just the way it worked out. Princess Diana was still alive, Mark and Lard were doing the Radio 1 breakfast show and Top of the Pops was still on television. I have been back many times each year since but now I have the opportunity to come back for ever. Things have changed. I am older, wiser and a parent. Everything I read in the papers tells me not to come - crime, alcohol and just a general dumbing down of life, expectations and behaviour. So, tell me good things and why I need to come home.......smile

Walks through proper english woods and over hills and dales, followed by a great pub lunch somewhere (preferably with a roaring fire and a large friendly dog owned by the landlord).

Thank-you everyone!! You are all making me feel terribly homesick (and really hungry!) and reassuring me that it isn't just my rose-tinted vision! Salbysea I totally agree!

the people! English people dont have the in yer face friendliness that say Americans and Irish are reputed with, but TBH I find it a bit empty, In England you have to work a bit harder to become friends with people but once you are "in" they are in my experience very loyal and loving.

I'd rather have a few true friends than the tonnes of "friendly" aquaintances I had in America or Ireland. Here you get quality smile

Links The simplest way to insert a link is to enter the link itself, surrounded by [[ and ]]. So if you type [[www.mumsnet.com]], the link will display as http://www.mumsnet.com. If you want your link to display text other than the web address itself, leave a space after the address then add the text before the ]]. So "Look at [[www.mumsnet.com this page]]", would display "Look at this page".
