Nonono, don't tighten to the max! What you want is good solid ankle support, but you still want circulation!

I can ice skate, and was actually doing a proper programme when I was about 6/7. Unfortunately I then moved away from a rink and now only skate when the local one comes in winter (1 week tomorrow!). I'm 19 btw.

I only remember I can't skate when I get onto the ice. Am so bad that complete strangers try to help me. I have no sense of balance. Not much cop at rollerskating or skateboarding either but I can ride a bike as long as I never let go of the handlebars......
Worst part for me when I have been is how uncomfortable the boots are. They are so stiff and hard on your feet. My feet ache afterwards for ages.

One of the keys is to make sure your boots are on sufficiently tightly to support your ankles so that the blades really feel like an extension of your foot. There shouldn't be a wobble at the ankle! Just take it slowly and you will be fine. Roller skating can help give you confidence but it is a completely different "feel".

It is not easy but it is not hard either.

If you can walk then you have sufficient balance to ice skate. There is no magic, just practice.

That said, two of the best training activities are roller skating (on a rink, not the street) and just walking on hard packed snow - going "straight to blades" is probably the hardest option of the three.
I can't ice skate or roller skate either.
No desire to learn though tbh. And not willing to occassionally fall over, which tbh seems to be an integral part of skating.
Can't be that hard though. All about the confidence probably. Dh is good at it. bastard. wink

oh well if peppa says so...

is it worth getting lessons do you reckon? or just going a couple of times on my own so i can have a go without having to hold up a very unconfident 6yo?

I can't ice-skate or roller-skate.

The few times I've tried it just felt as if "it was never meant to be" IYSWIM. I hadn't got a clue, I had no sense of balance and was terrified of hurting myself.

My theory is....if we'd been meant to ice-skate/roller-skate we'd have been born with wheels/blades instead of feet. grin

Emphasis: To bold a word, surround it with asterisks, so *hello* will display hello. For underline use _ , so _hello_ gives hello. For italics use ^, so ^hello^ gives hello. To strike out a word, surround it with two hyphens either side, so --dog-- gives dog

Links and smileys: To insert a smiley face, , type [smile] or :)
For a big grin, , type [grin] or :o
For a wink, , type [wink]

Links The simplest way to insert a link is to enter the link itself, surrounded by [[ and ]]. So if you type [[www.mumsnet.com]], the link will display as http://www.mumsnet.com. If you want your link to display text other than the web address itself, leave a space after the address then add the text before the ]]. So "Look at [[www.mumsnet.com this page]]", would display "Look at this page".
