ds2 is keen to do a 'Tors' weekend on Dartmoor. £30 for the weekend. ok, we can just about manage that with some budget shuffling. But he also needs walking boots, waterproof trousers and jacket, fleece, rucksack, walking trousers (not jeans) woolley hat n gloves. I'm estimating £100 minimum for all this kit. If he likes it, there's other Tors weekends at £30 a pop. If he hates it we've bought all that kit.
I'm fed up of schools doing this knowing full well some kids will be keen but simply not have this sort of money so its me, the mum, who gets to look like the miserable old fart saying no, we cant afford it. Again.
Hi Riven, I don't have CAT but if you want the waterproof trousers, email me at zobolostos@yahoo.co.uk with your adddy and I'll get them in the post.
Mumble.
riven - have you tried freecycle - it is amazing what some will spend money on then give away
I got an ENTIRE brand new brownie uniform for DD1 - i put the ask on hoping to get some spare bits/tide us over till we could buy the uiniform for birthday or something, and someone who lived in a massive house in the countryside was kind enough to give me a WHOLE uniform, because her DD had "gone twice and decided she did not like it" (spolit little rich kids , eh?)I can just imagine the same family kitting DC out in the most expensive kits for DofE and them deciding they did not like it cos it was too much like hard work, didn't like the weather etc
worth trying? or try asking your local scout leader etc if they can lend you anything?
I would do but don't have cat
my email is bronn erz@hotmail .com
It was good quality new so should be fine for Dartmoor (Regatta) It was the first present my DH ever bought me so it'll be nice knowing its going to a good home
I know you're struggling to get the kit together, but do make sure stuff is waterproof and he has enough warm clothes - Dartmoor this time of year is not for the faint hearted and not only will he be miserable, but it's dangerous if he gets too cold and wet.
them what have offered....can you CAT me please. Thankyou so much. Hopefully between us and the school lost property we can kit him out. If he likes it and wants to get into mad hiking in pissing rain xercise then we'll save for good kit over the year.
in my dd1 school they offer loads of school trips and I cannot afford them. My daughter got an A for her 11 plus and decided she wanted to go to this school which is a very good grammar school (I teach french conversation there LOL) but the majority of kids are from rich families and I had to explain to her that most of her friends will afford to go and she wont. She is very good and never ask me for anything. She knows my financial problems and does not want to add to them
Yes teenagers follow instructions. I used to do a lot of walking on Dartmoor in my teens and it was safe BUT you had to take care, make sure you had the right equipment to start with and not take any silly risks. When I was 14 I was out with a group of 6 of us aged 13-16 in January and the mist came down. You could barely see in front of your nose. We decided to pitch the tents and wait it out as we knew there were plenty of bogs but weren't sure exactly where they were. We heard someone screaming for help so two of us went over to them hand we found...
2 idiots in their mid twenties wearing jeans and t shirts who'd thought they could go for a little stroll! One had a broken ankle and they didn't have a hot drink or jumper let alone a first aid kit and waterproofs. The mist took over 2 hours to come up and we were told afterwards we probably saved them both severe cases of hypothermia and possibly their lives.
Follw instructions, take precautions and make sure you've got a competent navigator and you'll be fine. Don't and you may regret it its that simple
Without going into the wheres and whyfores of whether he shoudl go on the trip, and who shoudl provide equipment, tyr CCC Go Outdoors for cheap kit - tehy have a variabel range , but usually some at v low prices - then sell on Ebay!
They have a shop inb Brizle:
Go Outdoors
Ok I've looked its mens because its small
its worn, one of the inside zips, the ones that zip the fleece into the outer has gone which would explain why mil got me a new one as a present. I kept it though because it is still useable but as I have another I've not used it so its clutter. Would you like it? Would you like to show him a pic first? I know what boys and cred can be like
What dfate is it Riven? My yojnger brother does Army and Sea cadets so does a lot of this outdoor type stuff. He may have some bits he's grown out of or upgraded that i could pass your way.
If its not too late i could get mum to have a look and bring them to the Party
