Very quick poll, to help support a discussion currently going on over on the Special Needs board - Can't have babysitters from Sitters - which is about babysitters caring for a child over the age of 2, who wears a pull-up at night.
My gut feeling is that quite a lot of children aged over 2, still wear a night nappy. Is that the case though... what do you think Mumsnet jury?
My NT almost 3 year old still wears a pull up at night. She's been dry in the day since the first week of the summer hols. A lot of the time she is dry when she wakes up but not all the time so I'm sticking with nighttime nappies for a while longer than I'll bite the bullet and go for it.
My DD with SN's is 7 and still in nappies during the day and the night.
She certainly does. She's nearly 4. Potty trained during the day for well over a year. No SN.
Having looked at the other thread, she wouldn't need a change at night, so they'd never know, but am slightly at that policy. I don't know many children who were dry at night aged 2, and in the past baby sitters have had to change her.
Sounds like a sneaky way of saying "no children with SN" to me...
My DD was in a nappy at night until aged 2.11 and DS was in nappies until 3 yrs , as was pretty much every child i know of, being dry night and day seems to be much more likely at aged 3
DS1 and Dd were both in nappies at night until 6, and DS2 is still in nappies at 4. All were dry during the day between ages 2 and 3. Refusing to sit for a child in night nappies at 2 seems utterly ridiculous to me.
ds is 5 and dd1 is 2.11yrs both out of nappies in night. DD1 was dry day and night at 2. DD2 is 22mths and been dry in day from 18,ths so can see her possibly being out of nappies in night soon. However do think they were all very early for being dry at night but then they are awake for most of it
My ds (4.9) was toilet-trained by 2.5, and hasn't had any sort of day time accident for well over a year and a half now. But he does still wear a pull-up at night. Until about 3 months ago it was always wet in the morning, despite no drinks after 5, wee before bed etc. He's almost ready now. Not unusual at all, I'd say.
(after thought - 'nappy-changing' wouldn't be an issue for us with a baby-sitter though, as he very very rarely wakes and asks for a dry pull-up, and if he did he's perfectly capable of changing it himself....)
DS is now 7 and only became dry at night within the last 6 months. It's either wear pants (lets face it just a fancy nappy!) or go through a complete change of sheets every night.
IME most children take longer to become dry at night. As most parents do not start potty-training until somewhere between 2.6 and 3, you wouldn't expect most of them to be dry by the time they hit 3, would you?
Thank you all - it is as I thought. Many children I expect aged 3, 4 or 5 still wear a night nappy or pull-up.
Why do you think a National Babysitting Agency has allegedly told a parent that they can't care for their children due to one of their children being over the age of 2 and wears a pull-up at night?
dd1 (NT) 4.3 wore a nappy in bed till last week but was suffering from terrible nappy rash so she now sleeps on a Kylie pad but tbh even with being lifted every couple of hours she still wees on the pad a couple of times a night. So yes, the babysitter is utterly silly.
My nearly 4 yrold dd does (nt) and so does my 6yrold ds (sn), but my nearly 4yrold ds doesn't. I wasn't dry at night before I was 8 - no problems just was and still am the deepest sleeper in the world.
Yep, dd wore a nappy at night til she was almost 4- she was dry long before she stopped wearing them, but I think needed the security of having one on iyswim
3yr been dry during day and daytime sleep for 9mths but still has nappy at night - have tried without but still wets ed, has wet nappy so he just isnt ready - but no panic
DD 4 in night pullups( never changed in the night though) DS dry at 2.3 day and night Neither has SN
Children vary in needs and milestones regardless of diagnosis of SN. IMO any agency that refuses for that reason, cares more about ease of earning money rather than the children and I would refuse to use them
DS1 wore a pull-up at night till he was 4 years 7 months. DS2, 4 years 9 months, still does. Wet at least twice a week so I'm not about to try without. I don't worry about it in the slightest. I'd rather he wore a pull-up than give us both disturbed nights changing wet sheets. When he's consistently dry, we'll stop.
DS1 wore one until about 4.6yrs. Never had a dry nappy in the morning but one day we forgot to put one on and he was dry so we left them and never looked back so it could perhaps have been a bit sooner.
DS1 was out of them in the school hols (at 4.11) but has been wetting more and more since starting school so we decided to go back to pull ups for a while. We are all happy about it (there is a limit to how many sets of bedding we have) but we will try again after Christmas when he is 5.3.
I have to agree that being dry at night at 2 is rare. I don't know any child who was dry at night before 2.5 at the earliest and that seems rare.
DD 3 and DS 5 don't have nappies at night. DD has been out of night nappies since she was about 2.5 and DS was about 3. I think this happened early for both of them though.
My Dd1 (ASD) was 5 when she was dry at night. My Dd2 (NT) by contrast was only just turned 3.
I know many NT children who wore night nappies up to the age of 4 though so in answer to your OP I don't think it is unusual for a 2 yo to still wear a nappy at night.
i am actually reassured reading how many older dcs do still wear pull ups still at night. Mt ds will be 6 in December, we have tried numerous times to get him dry at night. I was told by a doctor that some children 'get it' quicker than others, and that stressing about it too much could make the prob worse.
i would be extremely surprised to hear that there are many children dry at night at 2- there aren't that many that are dry in the day!!
My DS is 4 and a half and has been dry in the day since nearly 3 but in a pull up at night as the few nights we tried without in the summer he weed every night and sometimes didn't even wake up and when I went to check him he was soaked and cold.
I never have to change the nappy during the night but he has always weed by morning.
Going to try again in the better weather, its no drama to me to put a pull up on him.
DD2 out of nappies at 2.2 through day but still in pull ups at night, now 3.8. She's had some dry days but generally isn't. TBH i'm not bothered. Don't know why cos really wanted DD1 out of them (and she was of her own accord). I may start worrying if she's still in them in a years time.
Both of mine were dry at night as soon as they decided to be dry during the day: dd at 2.10 and ds at 2.8. They both chose not to wear night nappies - even though I thought this was a very bad plan initially. They were right and I was wrong.
DD is 7 now and stopped wearing pullups 6 months ago....she will still have an accident maybe once a fortnight...she isnt lazy or anything she just doesnt always get the wake up call.
to expect a 2yo to not require a nappy is a bit optimistic and unrealistic imo
You only have to look at the shelves in the supermarkets to see a wide range of pull-ups and pyjama pants, specifically aimed at over fours, to know how common this is.
DD1 is still in night nappies at 3.9, always sodden in the morning - because a) she sleeps until about 8.30 and b) her 18 month ds has a big drink of milk before bed and I don't see how I can deny it to the older one. MIL is putting on so much prressure to get her out of them. I've decided to wait until she's 4. Now feel reassured that's OK
And sitters are talking crap, night nappies don't need to be changed!
dd1 was 3.5 years when dry at night. dd2 was 4.8 years and she was really hard work to get trained. She was still wearing nappies at night in reception. She got there in the end
DD is 4.3 and still not dry at night, she's been dry in the day for a good 18 months now.
DS was 3 last week and is dry at night but not in the day.
HV told me not to worry about DD till she was 7 and it's quite normal for them not to be dry until then, my brother is 5 and still wears a nappy to bed.
