I found it in the garden of our flat today
Its been annoying me all day as it clearly has a purpose, I just cant imagine what. And I know that the purpose will be boring and pedestrian, and so obvious I will kick myself, but I still have to post and find out!

Its like a square wooden bobbin, hardwood, really nicely polished and perfectly symmetrical, with a very old bit of string tied round it. I have even added a scale to help! blush

kudos to the first poster that recognises it and puts me out of my late night clusterfeeding confusion

A net weight? For weighing down the nets used to cover fruit bushes.

DP says he reckons the string is a red herring. He reckons it's to rest your quill pen on, while writing letters on your posh writing bureau.

It's a random thing that your previous residents left there specifically to annoy you.

You'll need to find them and kill them ask wink

I have chopstick rests that look like that (without the string).

It looks like an ancient Egyptian pillow... albeit on a minature scale! grin

FIL was a woodturner and used to make random objects to practice. Then he would pop them in drawers in sale rooms to mess with people's heads.

It's not one of his though.

We,( husband and I) think it's that victorian type toy two sticks one for each hand with a loop of string and flick it up and down. a bit like the modern yoyo.
Google victorian toys

DiscoMoo, this chopstick rest looks a lot like it, doesn't it?

wigglylines Thu 28-Aug-14 00:08:10

More chopstick rests

DiscoMoo Thu 28-Aug-14 00:09:24

Yes that's exactly what my chopstick rests are like. Same sort of length too.

Chop stick rest and a salt/condiment bottle......Chinese restaurant near by?

Noshowofmojo Thu 28-Aug-14 00:12:29

Have you had an EKL visit your garden lately?

MrsWinnibago Thu 28-Aug-14 00:12:57

I reckon it's part of an old children's game. That string looks oldish. Something that dangled....

KingJoffreysBloodshotEye Thu 28-Aug-14 00:13:13

Chopstick rests?

Blimey, you guys are posh!!

grin

ArsenicyOldFace Thu 28-Aug-14 00:14:21

Tablecloth weight?

MrsWinnibago Thu 28-Aug-14 00:15:21

Or it could have just been a random thing someone tied around the end of their ball of string which was in a tin or jar...to stop it from going back through the hole. Though why they'd not tie a knot in I don't know....are there any holes in it?
