What did you think was made-up but is in fact real?

I thought puffins were fictitious - until I was 45. I thought they were like unicorns. This is a source of constant amusement to DH, the DCs, and most of the people I've ever met.

Anyone else think something real is made-up?

I'm usually guilty of the alternative op although have to agree puffins are a bit odd looking.

I don't know but that's hilarious. PUFFINS?

grin

Hassled Thu 28-Aug-14 09:08:08

Yes, puffins blush. It's not like I gave them a whole heap of thought - maybe I was confusing them with Dodos (they're not real, right?). I actually googled them as I wrote my OP just to double check existed.

I thought there would be a rush of people saying "Yes! I thought sloths/bidets/pocket watches were made up". But it's just me.

Seahorses!

Dodos are real... Extinct, but real.

Puffins is hilarious. I wonder how that came about?!

Electriclaundryland Thu 28-Aug-14 09:10:31

Dodos are real, just extinct.

HighwayDragon Thu 28-Aug-14 09:11:04

I thought tahiti was a made up place

I thought timbuctoo was made up and also thought Peru was made up.

Dilligufdarling Thu 28-Aug-14 09:12:41

Not me, but I know someone who was CONVINCED that salmon was a vegetable. She'd only ever seen it in tin cans.
When her bf dragged her up to the morrisons fish counter and showed her a whole salmon "au naturel" she totally freaked out! gringrin

I thought. Narwhals were made up. The unicorns of the sea blush

Dilligufdarling Thu 28-Aug-14 09:17:58

Brie - I definitely had my doubts re timbuctoo.
Am also often surprised when things I've assumed were total stereotypes turn out to be true...
Eg I went to my first ever catholic service in my mid twenties and thought it was brilliant when they started wafting incense about.
Struggling to think of one more interesting now, but it's happened aLOT.

BongCrisby Thu 28-Aug-14 09:21:17

I also thought narwhals were made up.
Iirc there was a film about them in the late '80's. I thought they were cleverly made up normal whale type whales.

Eskimos blush

For a very long time.

Sandiacre Thu 28-Aug-14 09:23:44

I thought moles were the size of dogs until an adult, due to the massive hills they make.

HighwayDragon Thu 28-Aug-14 09:27:04

oh yes and timbuctoo was fake, it had to be, nope blush

Also Timbuktu. Why did so many of us think that?

MrsJoeDolan Thu 28-Aug-14 09:32:06

Sherwood Forest

MirandaWest Thu 28-Aug-14 09:32:57

I'm another one who thought Timbuktu was made up. And still not sure how big moles are. I think I confuse them with wombles. I am very sure they are made up grin

3stripesandout Thu 28-Aug-14 09:33:40

I thought cows only came in black and white. I don't think I'd actually put much thought into it.

Made the mistake of saying it in front of friends farmer DH. It's never been forgotten!

Hassled Thu 28-Aug-14 09:35:01

I need some sort of "these birds are real; these birds are made-up" ladybird book, don't I?

I can see why Timbuktu would seem fictional. It should be like Valhalla or somewhere. Seacows - I know they exist, but they shouldn't exist.

raimeising Thu 28-Aug-14 09:35:40

When The Office first came out I thought Slough was a made up place blush. In my defence, I'm not from the UK.

JimmyCorkhill Thu 28-Aug-14 09:36:03

Ha ha - I came on to say Timbuctoo!! I blame the Mr Men books for that one.

JimmyCorkhill Thu 28-Aug-14 09:36:46

I mean Timbuktu blush
