My niece was born sleeping on Sunday.

We didn't find out until today as my sister in law was also very poorly.

My niece has suffered catastrophic brain damage and has been on life support, but is unlikely to survive the night, apparently.

I have no idea what to say to my brother and sister in law and feel so helpless. My mum and dad and my sister in law's parents have gone to London tonight to be at the hospital.

I don't know why I'm posting really. I guess to ask if anyone has any advice about how to be supportive?

So sad.
Sorry for your loss.

A truly awful thing to happen. I'm sorry for your loss.

Thinking of your family tonight.

Sending hugs x and thoughts.

If you can't speak to them on the phone send a text saying that you wish you were there and that there was something you could do. Just hearing from people on that situation is comforting.

There's always things like taking food round and running errands, little things that they won't be too concerned with at the moment.

You sound very thoughtful and I'm sure they'll appreciate that.

I'm so sorry. How awful for you all. Have a brew.

I'm so sorry, it's so so sad.

I did phone the hospital ( St George's) to leave a message for my brother and sister in law, which they said they would pass on. The nurse sounded very kind; I hope they are with kind people.

Oh no that is awful, so so sad. It is a nightmare situation and it is hard to know what to do for the best but just be there for them they will need it.

Very sorry to hear this.

I'm so sorry caff.
There are several threads in the bereavement section, including this one where people have given advice, although its more for the ongoing being there than the immediate next few days, but probably worth a read.

I second Ilovemydog. Her advice seems spot on to me.

They also have a two year old at home, but I think my mum and dad and Sil's parents will help and they have lots of friends I think. I just wish I could somehow make it not be happening. I am not very close to my brother, but am very fond of my sister in law, and can't stop thinking about what they both are going through.

A very sad outcome to what was expected to be a joyous occasion.

Sorry for your loss.

Thank you for all the messages, and I will read that thread, thank you.

That's very, very sad and I am sorry. There will be good advice in the bereavement section I would think. Just letting them know you are thinking of them is probably the best you can do right now. flowers

So sorry to hear this.

Did you know you've mentioned your SIL's name in your last post? Not sure if you meant to.

Much love to all your family.

enthusiasmcurbed Tue 05-Aug-14 23:17:38

All you can do is offer help. It's up to them whether they take it but it will mean so much that you are there, close up till now , or not.

Caff2 Tue 05-Aug-14 23:18:20

Oh, God, no I didn't mean to mention her name - can I change that?

Corabell Tue 05-Aug-14 23:21:02

Report your post and ask for her name to be removed.

So sorry for your loss.

I have reported your post Caff2.

Thinking of you all.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Sending love and hugs thanks

My niece was born sleeping 5 weeks before I gave birth to my first daughter.

Was a truely horrendous time and even now. 5 years on it can bring me to tears in an instant.

SANDS are an amazing charity and I hope your SIL uses them.

Feel free to PM me whenever you like. Sending your whole family love xx

So very, very sorry for your loss.

Thank you I reported the post, I wasn't thinking when I wrote her name.
