If you had 35k to spend on a brand new car, what would you buy?

After living frugally for decades, dh and i have come to a dawning realisation that were actually better off that our lifestyle suggests. Mortgage paid off; no childcare costs, enough savings to feel secure etc.

I know there loads if reasons not to spend 35k on a car and loads more not to buy a new car but if we were to splash out on a significantly better car than we've ever had before, what should we go for? I find i really don't like the standard bmw/merc type offerings that all look the same

Do you live in a city or more countryside, also how much mileage do you do what sort of travel are you talking about? This would affect my decision considerably.

Of course! Townies, v low mileage on an average week, i walk to work and dh trains, but drive 300 miles in a weekend c. 10 times a year and 2000 in a fortnight once a year

The new Mercedes A class is nice - as is the Audi A3 -you could get one of those with amazing spec and still have change from 35k

EricIsMine Wed 30-Jul-14 20:26:22

Something fun! Porsche Boxter? Maxda MX5? Toyota GT?

I'd get an Audi A5. DH has a new one and it's fab.

I'm sure you can get a petrol version for around £35k. Might need to get one 6 months old though.

You could get two MX5's for 35k grin

We've just bought a citroen c4 grand picasso exclusive plus and I bloody love it! Loads and loads of gadgets/tech it can even park itself! (Ok I have to control accelerator/brake - also clutch if it's manual but mine an etg6 semi auto)

Here's a brief list of its good points :

Massage seats
Passenger leg recliner
Park assist (self parking)
Panoramic front windows
Panoramic roof
Speed limiter (no more speeding!)
Cruise control
Radar guided speed control
Keyless entry
Push button start/stop
Start/stop technology
Huge boot
Headlights that turn going round a corner

There's loads more but I can't remember it all. You can get a 5 seater too but we need the 7 seats.

Range rover sport. Shoot me down but I love mine.
(Even though I'm shit at parking / reversing it, just avoid that small detail)

Forgot to add 3 full size rear seats that move and recline individually.
Apparently good mpg, but I haven't took much notice. It's also got integrated sat nav that shows petrol stations or food places on the map which is very handy. It was comfortable on a recent day out.

Ps, hated my Audi a5. Lasted 3 months.

Town driving...
Do you need to be able transport anything?
Teenagers? Canoes? Skis? Dogs?

I'd buy two mx5 or BMW sporty convertible?

Range rover!

This thread has reminded me I should post my own thread with a £3k budget.

You wouldn't get a RR Sport for 35k though? I've been looking and they are 58k upwards for a decent spec?

teacher54321 Wed 30-Jul-14 20:39:45

I. Want. An. Evoque. They're so pretty.

scratchandsniff Wed 30-Jul-14 20:39:54

Audi A5 cabriolet

peggyundercrackers Wed 30-Jul-14 20:39:54

I would think a Lexus, lotus, range rover evoque, merc cla45 or c63 or slk. Thing is 35k isn't an awful lot for a new car nowadays and it really depends what you want from the car - comfort or speed? I would stay away from most audis as they are pretty common now.

Frontier stated her budget. Don't be mean ThisBitch.l

Beaverfeaver2 Wed 30-Jul-14 20:41:07

BMW z4 3litre

lazee Wed 30-Jul-14 20:42:29

Mine is a 2010 and I love it. Much less than 35 k monkey.

marne2 Wed 30-Jul-14 20:42:32

I would buy a vw corrado ( the new one ).

I'm stuck as I need a 7 seater so have limited choice.

I'd love not to have that restriction.

Why don't you look at the new Ford Mustang that is being released. It's a beast and you probably won't ever see another.

grumblepuss Wed 30-Jul-14 20:43:36

Hmmm...
I'd make DH have something dull, four seated...Audi A4?
I'd have something two seater and fun.

A Golf. A bloody nice Golf but it would still be a Golf.
(Disclaimer: I don't work for VW but I fucking love Golfs)
