Things our kids won't get

DH and I are talking about stuff our DS will probably find hard to believe/ just won't have experienced. Technology has changed so much since we were children. So far we have:

When someone was using the internet no one else could use the phone

Having to ring the cinema for film times

Anything you ever used teletext for and if you missed your page having to wait ages for it to come back on again

If you wanted a song without paying for it you taped it off the radio and prayed the DJ wouldn't talk over the end.

Anyone got any others?

That dial up tone...they'll never have to suffer it!

The "pips" when you needed to put more money in the phone box.

The TV shutting down for the night at the end of programmes. The test card.

A phone card which you used in a phone box.

Going to meet someone in town and not being able to text/ring them if they were late. You just had to go back home. shock

Using textbooks and bloody encarta for schoolwork. No googling!

Dsis and I were telling teenage DN about looking in the paper for film times and she thought it was hilarious! It seems so long ago and yet DH and I were still doing that when we used to go to dates to the cinema (before he was DH).

Being able to watch tv programmes only at a scheduled time rather than any time you want via on demand / catch-up / online services.

My 6 year old asked me what a typewriter was last week. She had absolutely no frame of reference for it.

Going through the TV Times and circling the films you wanted to video over Christmas and New Year!

Iamblossom Thu 17-Jul-14 21:18:21

Having to get up and change the channel. In our house the youngest person had to do it.

Arguing over what to watch, or having to watch what your parents wanted because you only had one TV.

Lugging CDs on holiday with you to play in your discman.

Writing letters to friends you didn't see often....pen pals!!!

tealover1985 Thu 17-Jul-14 21:18:49

Oh yeah, I forgot the tv used to finish for the night!

DS was with us in the charity shop was wanted to know why the 'films were so big'. Explained they were videos, not dvds. 'What's a video?' grin

Recording something off Sky on video and not being able to turnover to watch something else.

Bus conductors
Phone boxes that took 2ps and the pips when you needed to put the money in as someone had answered.
Credit card machines with the carbon paper that they wrote on and you got the top copy.
Pound notes

Ordering a pizza delivery and having to talk to a human.
Having a building society book to get money out at set times.
Postal orders.

CD Walkmans! Having to hold them flat.
Tape decks in cars - not that long ago!

Putting film in a camera and taking it to a shop to get developed.

Iamblossom Thu 17-Jul-14 21:21:59

That there used to be cigarette lighters in cars...

Jacksterbear Thu 17-Jul-14 21:22:01

Twiddling the set-top ariel on the TV to get a less fuzzy picture or get rid of that "ghosting" effect.

Making mix tapes!

wheretoyougonow Thu 17-Jul-14 21:22:08

Jackster Bear I still do that at Christmas!

I bought old fashioned soap the other week and found it with a hole in it. My children have never seen hard soap and were 'scooping' at it with their fingers!!!!!
My eldest found a video tape and asked what it was.

LOLeater Thu 17-Jul-14 21:22:35

Sending a film away to be developed and then having to weed out the rubbish photos.

CecyHall Thu 17-Jul-14 21:22:43

Me and DH were talking as if our Walkman batteries were running out (our fun life), kids had no idea what we meant
