bizare biopsy result appointment?

its a weird one, kinda long so please bare with me....

I have had a lymph node in my neck enlarged since new years eve, saw OOH who referred me for investigation etc, was suppose to see gp if still enlarged after three weeks, life got in the way and I only just got around to seeing gp. Ended up with urgent referral on cancer fast track programme. Everything moved quickly after that, saw ENT specialist who did a quick camera up the nose, said needed biopsies of bulky lymphoid tissue in my sinuses as well as urgent fine needle aspirate and ultrasound of my lymph node.

Lymph node biopsy went okay doctor didnt say alot at the time and I am booked for a general anaesthetic for further biopsies and investigation this thursday.

Saturday evening I got a call to tell me I had an appointment booked to discuss results on tuesday (today) bit odd but maybe someone was working overtime right.

So today was the result appointment, I took my mum and ds aged 4 with, saw same consultant, he waffled on a bit about the surgery thursday (which he covered last time) had to ask about results of the fine needle biopsy of lymph nodes. First he said computor system wasnt working (it was btw) then he said the results werent back, odd given They called me in for this! And I could see them on the screen, he seemed quite nervous really and shuffled off to find his secretary before concluding he would discuss it when all the other tests were back after the op.

Now the reason I know the computor system was fine was because I worked in the path lab until recently, For the same reason thats how I know the results would have been back and I could easily see them completed on my patient file, so they had definately been reported, he didnt open the entry so I couldnt see the actual diagnosis though. It threw me a bit normally I would have been bolder and questioned him more, but for obvious reasons I am a bit of an emotional mess right now.

Surely if the results were negative there is no valid reason for not sharing this? Yes I had a small child with but would that stop a consultant giving you bad news? Or is he waiting on the remaining biopsies to be able to give staging information and prognosis all at once? I am baffled.

Has anyone ever not been given biopsy results? If so why?

I am more worried than I was before now, consultant was an older chap and even held my hand and wished me the best of luck? Is that a normal thing to say?

It may be the fact you had your child with you that threw him. Try and book an appointment where you can get childcare and then take someone with you to hold your hand

Hope it's good news

Op, sorry didn't want to read then not reply. Sorry you're going through a scary time.
Maybe they called you in, in error then he's had to fumble his way through. He also might be waiting for the results of all your tests before they make a decision.
Hope you get sorted asap flowers

Just been left really worried, thanks for replying though. I suspect the child presence was part of the issue.

Hi bubble

How was your surgery on Thursday? Hope all is well. Did you manage to track down the results of the other biopsies?

Take care

Still no results! Asked the Dr doing my op and he said my consultant will discuss it with me once all the results are in from the op........
And thursday was a disaster, turns out I should have been put as an inpatient not day surgery so they got me changed while looking for a bed etc, then just after 6pm, having been nil by mouth since midnight the night before, the doctor sent me home. Rebooked as an inpatient for monday 7th july. Very fed up now sad

I do however know that in addition to biopsying the bit in my sinuses they were worried about, it will also be a tongue biopsy and a throat biopsy as well.

You must be frustated and very tired. Hope you get some rest today.
Maybe call and explain how anxious you are about it and insist on more info?

Bloody hell what a cock up shock If you're worried then I would ring up and ask what is what. Very unfair to make you wait so long, obviously it won't make any difference to the result but at least you can get some reassurance.

That's awful leaving you with a worry like this. I would insist on seeing someone and ask the questions you want to ask. You are entitled to whatever answers/ info they have.

Mind you, my mum had breast cancer and before surgery had a chest X-ray and we got a phone call the next day saying she had to have a CT scan of chest because something had shown up. Then a few days later we got a phone call to say she had been given an appt with the surgeon at 5pm the day before the op was due as he needed to talk to us.
It was a terrible day. We both thought the cancer had spread to her lungs and he was going to tell us they could not operate. We went into the room both scared beyond words and he said 'The CT results are fine. See you at 8.00am in the morning'. Gobsmacked! No idea why they put us through that except he does not give CT scan results over the phone or by letter.

That makes me feel a little better Lulu. Hope your mum is okay now.

My mum died earlier this year but not of cancer, of old age! She had a long, happy life and the cancer was treated in that one op and never returned.

You're doing well Bubble, you seem to be very calm and taking it all in your stride. Good luck for next Monday. Are you abroad? Or not sleeping? Just wondered why your posts are in the middle of the night <nosey>!
