Pobblewhohasnotoes Mon 10-Feb-14 13:12:39

6? Is this how they teach it at primary school (I only know this from practising with my daughter)?

Six.

Eight hundreds.

Six tens

Eight units.

Eighty six and eight tenths of a ten!

welshnat Mon 10-Feb-14 13:13:14

6. they means Hundreds, Tens and Units I expect.

BanjoPlayingTiger Mon 10-Feb-14 13:13:18

If you mean how many lots of ten are in 868 then the answer is 86.8
If you mean how many tens are in the tens column then the answer is 6.

It is an ambiguous question.

Mon 10-Feb-14 13:13:21

6?

Have to admit I find primary maths just weird. I did maths at A level - syllabus B, so pure maths, applied maths and stats, and did algebra and geometry, but current primary maths is beyond me.

ashtrayheart Mon 10-Feb-14 13:13:56

I'm going with 6 as well

6.

Gruntfuttock Mon 10-Feb-14 13:14:15

How can the answer be 6?

Manchesterhistorygirl Mon 10-Feb-14 13:14:34

And I feel like a crap mum. Again.

It's ds1's last piece of maths homework and I just don't get it! The school have given us no indication of what or how he's being taught anything and I keep making a bloody idiot of myself trying to help him.

It's parents evening next week so wibu of me to ask if they could perhaps communicate a little better, and to also ask if he's ever going up a book band given that he reads everything and anything at home, but once again has been in the same band for over a term?

Mon 10-Feb-14 13:14:53

Depends if you are splitting it up into 100s 10s and units.

There are 6 tens.

If you were asked how many times does 10 go in to 868, then the answer would be 86.

JackNoneReacher Mon 10-Feb-14 13:15:41

If it's 6 they really need to rephrase the question to make it clear. Because clearly there aren't 6 tens although there are in the 10's column.

DrDre Mon 10-Feb-14 13:15:44

My daughter's school did a session for the parents, to help them understand how maths is taught in primary schools. Perhaps you could ask them to do that?

LIZS Mon 10-Feb-14 13:15:46

hundreds 8 (800)
tens 6 (60)
units 8

Manchesterhistorygirl Mon 10-Feb-14 13:16:07

The wording was "how many tens are in 868?"

I feel like a fool!

ItsAllGoingToBeFine Mon 10-Feb-14 13:16:08

Like the other recent thread on this, it is an utterly shit question that requires you to make various assumptions to come up with an answer.

The question should be phrased in an unambiguous manner.
