Dd (year 5 but this is 11+ prep) is stuck with homework and dh and I can't work it out either.

The question is:

The code for DUET is WLXK
Work out the code for SVKF
Options are:
ZIPS
sTOP
GASP
OWED
ZERO

Clearly we are missing something but can anyone solve this please? She has 100'of similar questions !

Why are you doing her homework ?

Sun 03-Nov-13 14:42:17

It's the alphabet backwards. Write A to Z with z to a underneath. Then you can break the code.

Sun 03-Nov-13 14:42:56

Oops no it isn't ignore me.

Sun 03-Nov-13 14:43:06

We aren't doing it for her.

She can't work out how to do it so asked us for help. we tried to explain so she could do it herself but we can't work it out either.

RandomMess Sun 03-Nov-13 14:43:20

I thought the alphabet backwards too

woowoo22 Sun 03-Nov-13 14:43:52

Do you not have to write out the alphabet, fill in the letters given under DUET, then fill in the rest of the alphabet? Am assuming it is something like the alphabet but shifted 3 places to the right etc etc? No idea if that will work!

MirandaWest Sun 03-Nov-13 14:43:54

I can't do it either. I thought K was going to be T (it seems to be from the first part) but none of the answers are correct if K is T.

MirandaWest Sun 03-Nov-13 14:44:53

Oh I have just confused myself . K is E isn't it?

MirandaWest Sun 03-Nov-13 14:45:20

No my first thought was right <exits quickly>

Sun 03-Nov-13 14:47:25

I thought it was the alphabet backwards but it doesn't work

woowoo22 Sun 03-Nov-13 14:47:40

Ahh if K is E it is OWED? V clever mirandawest!

Sun 03-Nov-13 14:47:45

We tried breaking it as a code but the next one is
occupied is gtulhzwu
Work out the code for ceatcvjj

So the two Cs are different!

GinGinGin Sun 03-Nov-13 14:48:17

Sorry thick question but I take it the answer is definitely one of those options you have listed?

Sun 03-Nov-13 14:50:00

K is T and none of the options has t as the third letter. So it seems impossible. Give us another.

IrisWildthyme Sun 03-Nov-13 14:50:40

It looks like a ROT code where you replace each letter with one X places on (the most common is ROT13 - google it - but you can use any number). However, it's EITHER more complex than that OR the teacher has got it slightly wrong as DUET being WLXK is 19 spaces on for D and E but only 17 for U and T. I think the teacher is actually trying to be fiendish but using a code which alternates between two coding rules for each letter.

I've worked out the answer, but it'll be more fun for you if I don't post it here.

Dancealot Sun 03-Nov-13 14:51:17

Yes its a key. Write out the alphabet, from the eg you know the code for D is W and E is X. Therefore F is Y, G is Z and H will be A etc.

sorry haven't explained it well, but if you write out the alphabet with the code underneath hopefully it will become clear.

mercibucket Sun 03-Nov-13 14:53:42

count back 7 and 9 alternately?

Sun 03-Nov-13 14:53:55

Even more confusing! It's a handout from every lesson counts.

We thought we had sussed it until this one:

The code for occupied is GTULHZWU
Work out the code for CEATCVJJ
Optionscare:

Identify
Knickers
Underwear
Keepings

mercibucket Sun 03-Nov-13 14:54:55

zero

3bunnies Sun 03-Nov-13 14:55:32

I would have said same as Miranda so takes coat and joins her to have small panic attack about dd1 and 11+.

mercibucket Sun 03-Nov-13 14:55:41

lol sorry iris did i spoil the fun?

Bearcat Sun 03-Nov-13 14:56:02

Just had my Cambridge grad engineer husband look at it quickly as he is watching Tottenham v Everton and he first said it was alphabet backwards but then realised it is not. He is back watching Footy now.
These home works are ridiculous for 10 year olds if their parents can't even begin to work it out.
Always remember one of ours once trying to work out a maths homework and then DH trying to work I out only to find the junior school had set the question wrong and it was impossible!

MirandaWest Sun 03-Nov-13 14:56:55

I can't do it. Realised my mistake before in thinking about the T and tried to write out the alphabet underneath itself with the "word" letters above and the "non word" below but it doesn't work as Iris says. This is going to frustrate me now .
