## Anyone able to do KS3 maths?!

In this addition each letter stands for a different digit, with S standing for 3. What is the value of Y x O?

S O
+ M A N Y
S U M S

Sorry can't get it to format properly, obviously the SO should be above the NY and the SUMS directly underneath the MANY if that makes any sense!

SPB - 3006 is an answer but the next year is 2014!

Is it multiplication or addition? You've used both signs and that will obviously affect the answer!

I make 2004 and the units equal to double the thousand 3006!

he is very impressed with the question actually- involves different routes in trying to solve a problem and several different steps. Good for GCSE from Summer 2017 onwards apparently!

no... says it's deliberate so you realise there are several ways of getting 3 on the end.

He doesn't teach any more- works for an exam board instead! The maths dept at my school hasn't been the same since ;)

Not particularly anchovies. I sort of used threes method, starting with the M=2 but not working left to right and substituting letters for numbers as I worked them out.

Is that year question as simple as it looks or am I missing something obvious.

Does anyone fancy trying to get a group of mixed ability 12 year olds to the answer 42 in 5 minutes for me?! Bear in mind the other question is:

The year 2004 has the units digit equal to twice the thousands digit.
Which year will it be when this next happens?

Talk about one extreme to another!

I'm with three - it's not tricky if you work logically from the left - M can only be 2, and thus A must be 9 and U must be 0 and then Three's working for the other four numbers.

Husband typing this one:

The 3 on the end is a bear-trap. The trick is to spot that you have an answer which is '3000 and something' when you add a number between 30 and 39 to another 4-digit number. The first digit of the four digit number (M) cannot be 3 as well, since this is S. So "MANY" must be 2900 and something. That gives you M and A. And you then spot that U must be 0 because there's no way it could be anything bigger.

So now we have SUMS = 3023, MANY = 29NY and SO = 3O

Because 2 has been used, you know that the O + Y is one of the options with a carry (4+9, 5+8, 6+7). Put the carry under the 2 of 3023 and you see that N=8.

Having used 8 and 9 now the only combination left for O + Y is 6 + 7.

You can't say for certain which way round these go, hence the question asks for the product, 42 (the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe and everything, of course!).
