In this addition each letter stands for a different digit, with S standing for 3. What is the value of Y x O?

S O
+ M A N Y
S U M S

Sorry can't get it to format properly, obviously the SO should be above the NY and the SUMS directly underneath the MANY if that makes any sense!

or even

he is very impressed with the question actually- involves different routes in trying to solve a problem and several different steps. Good for GCSE from Summer 2017 onwards apparently!

Is it multiplication or addition? You've used both signs and that will obviously affect the answer!

I make 2004 and the units equal to double the thousand 3006!

RosesInTheRain Thu 26-Sep-13 20:21:15

2014- the trap is 3006

youarewinning Thu 26-Sep-13 20:22:36

of course Roses it doesn't say the middle digits must equal anything!

ClayDavis Thu 26-Sep-13 20:25:23

Of course. I was missing something obvious. Totally fell for the trap.

Are these maths challenges questions?

SPBisResisting Thu 26-Sep-13 20:57:53

Ah yes I hadn't thought of 13
Why is "The year 2004 has the units digit equal to twice the thousands digit." a trap question? Is it not 3006?

anchovies Thu 26-Sep-13 21:23:39

SPB - 3006 is an answer but the next year is 2014!
