Because despite appearances of clutter, I think mine might have outgrown most of his and is genuinely bored. sad

Sharptic Sun 17-Mar-13 22:49:09

Lego, skylanders, moshi monsters. I think he would play on minecraft all weekend if I let him, but he still gets engrossed in making games with his skylander.figures or moshis.

A new pack of lego will entertain him for hours, pity it costs so much!

booge Sun 17-Mar-13 22:49:13

DS is 7 nearly 8 and loves his Lego most.

booge Sun 17-Mar-13 22:49:56

And minecraft when I let him play

Stinkyfeet Sun 17-Mar-13 22:52:26

Lego

gaelicsheep Sun 17-Mar-13 22:52:47

Yes you see I've been looking at Lego, which he does enjoy - particularly the technical stuff - and it costs a fortune! The smallest little sets - Lego Technic, for example, with one vehicle - are over £10. It's crazy!

I'm struggling because when I grew up we only got new toys and Christmas and birthday. But it's only really us and my parents that buys for the DCs and our usual budget just does not go very far at all. Consequently he really has very little and nothing to play with when friends come around. I feel so guilty. sad

We think we might get a Scalextric set for his birthday, but that's not until July.

Loads of stuff I HATE. Bloody Power Rangers and Transformers.

Playmobil has been a good investment and will weather a couple more years. Lego likewise - but I do get mild OCD when the different sets get mixed up into Lego Soup. I think Brio is on the way out, as is shop role play. Can't get them to concentrate on games. Costumes are popular in our house.

Trying to resist the move to preteen computer addiction, and interested to see what others have to say.

Must say would like something that inclines him and DS2 and DS3 to less towards warmongering about the place with improvised weapons.

youllneedthisfish Sun 17-Mar-13 22:54:53

Our Scalextrics has been under the stairs for two years. DS1 is 6 and DC2 and 3 are 4. Might work for us when the younger ones are better able to play..

Lego can be got pretty cheaply on ebay.

Lego playmobil hot wheels garage

And a drawing pad and a pen.

Simple things really

PlasticLentilWeaver Sun 17-Mar-13 22:56:14

Was going to post a virtually identical thread earlier so will watch and see. Have also concluded that DS1 has mostly grown out of his toys.

lego. Number one, main thing, keeps him happily occupied for hours.
Tractors.
Bow n arrow
Catapult
Toy cars
small whiteboard
marbles and assorted tubes

Often used in combinations, so lego is catapulted at the cars to try and knock them off a bridge of books. Or the marbles are run down tubes to fill the tractor trailer , then "driven" to the "barn" where they get pushed around by the wheel loader etc...

New fav ( birthday last week) is his dartboard.

gaelicsheep Sun 17-Mar-13 22:57:08

Can it though? I've been looking to no avail. I was looking at box sets of stuff that might fire his imagination - Lego Star Wars, technical lego, etc. - but they are nearly as expensive as on Amazon. I probably will get some more generic stuff to mix in with what we have, but I don't think that's going to light his fire.

youllneedthisfish Sun 17-Mar-13 22:57:08

Oh I forgot that we have the fleece blankets from Ikea in all the colours (£3 a pop), adn some big pegs from Lakeland. they love making dens with them

Sharptic Sun 17-Mar-13 22:57:43

I know gaelic, Ds last had lego at christmas and we don't buy it during the year.

But over the years it has built up, it adds up quite quickly. He had a Lego Ideas book so he can use his existing lego to build new stuff. We had a smaller tub downstairs which he would sit with for ages.

Scootee Sun 17-Mar-13 22:58:30

Skylanders and mario on the wii.
Moshi monsters stuff (tonnes)
Bin Weevils
Trash pack
Will not part with Cars, Ben 10, Octonauts or even Thomas the tank stuffshock
Lego
The toys are out of control, I need to do a huge charity shop run.

youllneedthisfish Sun 17-Mar-13 23:00:04

I also bite the bullet and buy paper and card and try not to think about how 'well' it is used. They sometimes waste a load, but then you will turn around and they have made a robot, so I guess the neurons are connecting as they do it.

Look up old Lego like 'Lego Space' and look out for mixed bag and job lots

Kewcumber Sun 17-Mar-13 23:00:13

Lego.
Starwars Lego
Star wars books
Star wars films
Lego star wars Wii game

(beginning to see a trend here)

Pens paper and stapler to make books.

Boot sales good for lego - and birthday/xmas present.

Sharptic Sun 17-Mar-13 23:01:02

Chess and draughts , noughts and crosses too, keeps him busy but requires my participation!

TheSeniorWrangler Sun 17-Mar-13 23:02:18

lego, skylanders, playmobile, monsuno, transformers, ben 10, bakugan, batman.

he's 6.5

gaelicsheep Sun 17-Mar-13 23:02:50

DS seems to have lost his imagination recently to mix and match toys. I think he genuinely is bored by what he has.

The things he still plays with are:

Power Rangers role play stuff he desperately wanted for Christmas (megasword and megablaster, or something)
Sonic screwdrivers for Dr Who role play, also desperately wanted for Christmas
(that was pretty much the whole Christmas budget gone from us and grandparents)

Nintendo DS with about 4 games, got for 5th birthday with one new game last Christmas. Not played with so much recently (I'm not sorry about that)

Lego that he has (tricky with 2 year old DD who wants to get into everything)

That's it really. Apart from the Lego, all quite solo stuff sad

We have board games, but I can't sustain his interest. He has been collecting Disney cars diecast models, but I've drawn the line now as they have become ludicrously expensive. He'll play building blocks with his sister. I dunno, it doesn't sound very exciting for him really.

Minecraft
Lego
Batman imaginext toys
Skylanders

gaelicsheep Sun 17-Mar-13 23:04:09

We live in a tiny house now as well, so no space to spread out (will need a small Scalextric!)

gaelicsheep Sun 17-Mar-13 23:04:32

What the hell is Minecraft?

stargirl1701 Sun 17-Mar-13 23:04:49

Try buying your Lego through education companies. You can buy buckets of the stuff rather than kits. Hope or NES Arnold online.

gaelicsheep Sun 17-Mar-13 23:05:47

Can I ask, do any of yours get major toys (ie more than £5-7) except for Christmas and birthday?
