Ah, Wikipedia says that there are some advantages to both ways:
Usage
There are different ways to use the pin: flatside up and wavy side up.
Flat side up:
provide a better hold
neat appearance on straight hair
ability to decorate pin
Wavy side up:
easier to slide into hair with the wavy side up
adds texture and dimension
seamlessly blends in with curly hair
It does look a lot neater, and no digging in so far. Maybe I'm just but very sensitive!

I assumed the flat side was to avoid lacerating your scalp on the way in?
