What were the best Book Day costumes you saw today (other than your own lovingly-crafted ones, obv)?
So that I can steal ideas for next year.
Our school was the usual parade of princesses, pirates, cowboys and knights, but the odd original one thrown in. Such a shame it was raining and the children had to keep their coats on!

Our school had a myths, legends & fairy takes theme. Dh took them in but said he saw someone who looked like a cross between gollum & someone else.

My favourite was possibly 'Room
On the Broom'. Recycle the Halloween costume, but with a home-made broom and animals twist, just enough effort involved.
DS is on the sofa doing a good impression of a fallen war hero (respitory infection) and DP is chanelling sleeping beauty (nice lie in on his day off).

I saw a couple of boys in scary masks (Pirates of the Caribbean I think) on my way out - am wondering how my 4yo is going to process that, hope we don't have any nightmares tonight!
A fab homemade Willy Wonka!! not jealous, oh no not me!
Poppywearer, my DD went as the witch from Room On The Broom! I was worried beforehand that we hadn't made enough effort, but she was the only girl in her class NOT wearing a Disney Princess dress. Luckily she didn't mind

I just saw a home made thing 1 & thing 2, they looked great. I saw a good Hagrid too.
I was proud of DS1 in his homemade knight costume. So many children in bought costumes. He was worried because one of his mates was also going as a knight but was very proud of his homemade helmet, sword, shield and pillowcase costume.
DD's school did 'bedtime stories' so they've all gone in their pj's.
After being printed in the last 2 school newsletters, an email, a letter home and a text message I'm wondering if anyone forgot
(I didn't do the school run this morning)

DS went in a Viking costume that I shamelessly bought because I didn't have the time or inclination to make one. I think all of the children looked great and it was cute how excited they all were to be dressed up.

Thing 1 and Thing 2 - great idea! <makes notes>
So happy it's done and dusted for this year! DD decided she wanted to be something for which I had no choice at short notice to shop-buy (not a princess though) although we did add our own touches and some warm clothes underneath as it is cold today! but I do want to steer her to something more original next year.
Ordinarily I'm a "chuck money at the problem because I haven't got the time and inclination" kind of person, believe me.
But DS1 had made a brilliant helmet and sword recently anyway from an activity book he'd been bought, so we went with that, and it was quite easy really. I was just really pleased for him that we'd made the effort this time despite the fact that I've been up late for three nights as a result.
Didn't make any effort with DS2 though, who has gone to nursery in a Bob the Builder costume...!

Oh no flowery! I just re-read my post and I promise it wasn't a dig at you
I think it's fab you made his costume, I made DS Halloween costume last year. I just wouldn't be bothered today
No don't worry I didn't take it as a dig. I was trying to make it clear that I wasn't criticizing anyone who did buy a costume!
<<stops digging>>
Everyone looked lovely!

Another Room on the Broom witch here! Mine costume was a bit of a mishmash - a skirt off eBay, the hat from her halloween costume, a red tshirt and a cape made out of a charity shop skirt, plus broom and cauldron with correct animals
. It was lovely to see dd wearing something I put together rather than another Disney princess although she took some gentle persuasion away from her tinkerbell dress.

Mr Stink from the book Mr Stink by David Walliams, complete with a fluffy dog, fake doggy poo and a Tupperware box to be opened at an appropriate moment containing 'the stink' ( egg and garlic salt....nice).
DS was well impressed with his efforts! , so glad it was parents evening last night x
DS wanted to be Kwazii from Ocotnauts (which were originally books). I was just hoping he didnt get teased for it being 'babyish'. I though his costume looked fab though
There were lots of Disney Princesses, Pirates and cats. ASs we were going into the cloakroom one girl did scowl "have YOU come as a cat as well" and didnt seem impressed
Saw a homemade spider (8 stuffed socks stitched onto a long-sleeve top) that looked like there'd been a lot of child involvement.
I got far too carried away with costume this yr, will take a break next year I think.
Just as I was coming out of school this morning, a boy dressed as Jesus was just walking in! He had he robes, the wig, the beard etc, but he was also wearing a crown of thorns and had a huge cross tied to his back. I can't stop laughing, it's not what you expect to see on the school run, even on world book day! It was sort of terrible and wonderful at the same time.
