Ive been feeding my 2 cats felix as good as it gets, 1 is constantly crying for food so i mix it with biscuits but as he has hardly any teeth left (16 yrs old) he cant really eat them.

anyway i worked out im spending nearly £60 a month on cat food shock. Whats aldi's like? or any supermarket brands. I buy the huge massive box which is £13 and that lasts nearly a week.

Yes i know this is an extremely boring way to start your thursday morning but im really curious and ill be your very best friend if you tell me grin

I go to Costco and bulk buy, if that's any help! They normally have a choice of Whiskas or Felix and I go for whichever is cheaper. IIRC, it's about £9 for 48 pouches.

VIX1980 Thu 07-Mar-13 08:57:39

hi, Thanks but thats where i currently go for mine and its £13 a box of 48, just far too much to spend a month on cat food while we live on basics!

guess whose the boss in our house!

Aldi's cat food is really good - our cat is the fussiest eater around and he loves the salmon one and the tuna. (Only likes fish).

We get the tins and use one of those plastic lids so it doesn't stink out the fridge. We used to get pouches but he only eats small amounts at each time, so we were chucking half of it away. Now we use tins it is loads cheaper and we have less waste, just put a couple of forkfuls in the bowl each time.

I tried Tesco and Sainsbury's cheap cat food, but it looked really awful and he didn't really eat it. When we went back to Aldi he started licking the bowl clean again.

I think a 400g tin at Aldi is something like 45p, and he gets through about 4-5 a week, mixed with biscuits. Aldi do biscuits too, can't remember how much but they are pretty cheap and a box lasts us about a month or so.

My cat loves the Aldi one and she's pretty fussy.

HintofBream Thu 07-Mar-13 09:04:51

I know tins are more economical, but I hate them. Does Aldi do pouches and are they any good?

samuelwhiskers Thu 07-Mar-13 09:06:07

Our cats love Aldi dried food (the small packet which is a bit pricier) and all the various flavours soft food from there. Tried others but keep going back to these as they seem to like them the best.

Ours like sainsbury's own brand. About £9 for 48. I have a cat with 3 teeth and brain damage and she eats it. Sometimes if I'm not rushing, I sqidge the pouch a bit before I open it, but they eat it whatever anyway. I also mix good quality biscuits with cheaper ones to make them last longer.

Yes, Aldi do pouches - my two cats eat them enthusiastically. They do a few different ranges, I buy the cheapest ones at £1.99 for 12 pouches. I would avoid the ones in gravy (I get the jelly ones) as the food is almost impossible to extract from the pouch. The jelly ones are fine tho.

MarmaladeTwatkins Thu 07-Mar-13 09:08:51

Please be careful about feeding your cats pouches. I used to feed them to my old cat and the vet told me that it is the equivalent of giving your child a McDonalds everyday. It is just processed crap and not good for them. smile

I use the ProPlan dried food and it is usually on two for £7 and I use two bags a fortnight so £14 a month.

ordinarygull Thu 07-Mar-13 09:09:32

I feed my two on IAMs dry food, which although is not normally a cheap option (£14 for 3kg in the supermarkets) we have found that if you buy it in B and M home bargains the same 3kg pack is only £6.99.
They don't always have it so I stock up on it when I see it - a 3kg bag lasts two cats for nearly 4 weeks.

HintofBream Thu 07-Mar-13 09:09:53

SamuelWhiskers, does the soft food you refer to include pouches?

VIX1980 Thu 07-Mar-13 09:10:10

Thanks for the tips, i was just looking at the asda tiger 1 which is £8 for 40 packets, I always have to squidge the packets for them otherwise they just walk away. But i may buy a small packet of them to try along with the aldi tins although i personally cannot stand the tins because of the smell, ive had the lids in the past and just couldnt cope which is why i started getting packets.

But ill give them a go and hopefully save a bit of money for ourselves in the process, thanks!

My two (age 20 and 14) seem to do very well on sainsbury's own brand pouches and go-cat biscuits.

Aldi cat food is good. But be warned, whenni've tried to economise on cat food I've discovered that they eat more of it, so it's a false economy.

The one I don't buy is Whiskas, because they put a drug in it that makes the cats addicts so they are howling for food all the time it doesn't seem to go very far.

VIX1980 Thu 07-Mar-13 09:21:54

seeker Ive heard that before but thought it cant possibly be true but now im wondering if thats what they do with felix also. Ill give them a pouch each and half an hour they are crying for more, then everytime we go near the kitchen they run out expecting to be fed, thats why i end up spending so much on their food.

Sarahplane Thu 07-Mar-13 09:22:01

my cats tried the aldi pouches recently and loved them. The greedy cat didn't seem to notice the difference and eats anything but my fussy cat wolfed it down, he normally won't finish a whole pouch of whiskers  and if he doesn't like the flavour just go and find another family to feed himgrin

TaggieCampbellBlack Thu 07-Mar-13 09:26:04

Pouches are all water and crack.

We're on Lidl this week.

Next week they'll suddenly all refuse to eat it so we'll swap back to kittykat/whiskers/tiger

VIX1980 Thu 07-Mar-13 09:30:00

Right im off to aldi to buy some tins, asda to buy some pouches and see which ones they love the most! smile

MummyPig24 Thu 07-Mar-13 09:36:26

My cat has asda tiger pouches. He won't eat Tins of even luxury stuff, but will eat the cheapest of pouches. He is also a greedy bugger.

HintofBream Thu 07-Mar-13 09:41:26

I'm off to try Aldi

TheCatIsUpTheDuff Thu 07-Mar-13 10:00:31

My cats like the Aldi biscuits and the Lidl equivalent. They don't have wet food.

MyNameIsAnAnagram Thu 07-Mar-13 10:02:54

I buy tesco own brand tins in jelly and tesco own brand biscuits and my two seem to like them.

khaleesidragon Thu 07-Mar-13 10:03:08

I buy sainsburys tins for my can and he seems to enjoy them.

toomanycourgettes Thu 07-Mar-13 10:07:38

Our elderly lady (16) has Aldi tinned tuna chunks (a small can does her 3 or 4 meals) and about 1/3 cup of good quality biscuits twice a day. She spends most of her time curled up asleep these days so obviously doesn't burn it off the way a kitten would.

I know an independent pet shop owner who has done a lot of research on pet food and won't feed their pets on most of them - especially the big brand pouches and tins, because they're mostly water and don't provide enough 'food'.

Our cat would probably eat a whole ham if given the chance - she loves ham!
