PoppyWearer Fri 01-Mar-13 17:42:20

Also my Mum's birthday at this time of year, real nightmare and she also gives me no ideas!

She's getting a bowl of flowering bulbs and some toiletries for Mother's Day.

Normally flowers or choccies, but that gets boring, so just to be different this year I have got her a garden gnome. not at all looking forward to her having to find him a spot in her immaculate and v. classy garden I'm an evil daughter.

An orchard! Well, 5 mini fruit trees for her garden. Thought it would be something a bit different and I think she'll really like it smile

DIY! My Mum has tonnes of everything, and is on a diet. She always has rooms which need painting, or wardrobes from Ikea that need building etc. I live a couple of hours drive away, so go for the weekend and do as much as I can.

Then she spends the next month alienating my siblings from me by saying stuff like "Oh, look what a good job Kitty has done on such and such". Thanks Mum!!

I try to get my mum something different every year.

Last year I compiled her a bespoke Cadbury selection box (about a zillion items of choccie) and sent it to her. It was pretty good if you love chocolate with a passion like she does.

This year she will be here with me and I need to get her something truly brilliant as she is coming to help me with DS1 as DS2 is being born. And god, she is wonderful - makes dinner, cleans, adores DS1 and doesn't mind reading Julia Donaldson's entire library of literary works endlessly....

I also encourage DH to buy MIL something even though she always says she doesn't care about Mother's Day - she likes plants a lot so that has become our tradition. DH always used to take her lack of interest in Mother's Day at face value but once we had kids ourselves, we realised with clarity about how much parents need thanking!

Knitting patterns smile she has just got back into her knitting after a long hospital stay so we are having fun looking through ebay together and will hopefully knit together as well.
Up until last mothers day last year I used to get card shop tat because she too doesn't like chocs, smellies etc and because I was always skint. Didn't have a clue what to get but hopefully sorted now.

In addition to the standard chocs/flowers

I am going to give my daughters mummy and nana the same gift. Since my better half told me she was pregnant I started to keep a journal. My daughter is now 3. I've taken some time to transfer the journal to a website as my mum lives in Spain so ideal for her. Thought it was kinda cute and different.

Take a look see what you think - http://lilla.webeden.co.uk/

This year the Skyfall DVD and I'm going to frame a photo of DS for her.

TBH I often seem to get her DVDs as she doesn't buy them for herself.

Usually just a card, or card and flowers. Would get her a present if I saw/thought of something she would like.

Chubfuddler Sat 02-Mar-13 09:53:15

Not much, flowers and a card usually and often invite her to lunch at ours, or take her out.

My mums birthday is in March it was mothers day the other year so I we dont buy her anything big for MD although her birthday/mothers day there was cards and presents everywhere envy

onedev Sat 02-Mar-13 11:15:51

Tickets to see Olly Murs (with me), so should me good fun. My birthday is in March - didn't realise it would cause such hassle for my boys as they get older with MD too (usually within a few days of each other) - not my fault though, you don't choose when you're born!! grin

I made mine a homemade card. This year I'll be away at an event and totally forgot it was Mother's Day so I'll have to think of something asap!

LaFataTurchina Sat 02-Mar-13 11:36:24

My mum's birthday is the 6th of March, so I've come down for the w/e to visit and bought her a card and a pressie (some fairly light type things from Tiger that she said hinted at).

I'll post her a nice card for mothers day and fill it with glitter and stickers. She's a crafty sort who appreciates glitter and stickers.

Just a card usually, maybe a bunch of flowers if we are seeing her but we don't make any particular plans to meet on Mother's Day. I'm in the not in the slightest bit bothered about it camp myself and don't expect anything.

FreshWest Sat 02-Mar-13 11:51:26

As Mothers Day is always very helpfully at the time when Easter eggs are in the shop I get her a naice one smile An M&S one this year in the shape of a giant walnut whip!
She doesn't get an egg at Easter so it's the best solution really.
Also a card, but why oh why do card manufacturers not think its a good idea to produce cards with 'Mam' on them? Can't get one anywhere, and nobody calls their mother mum or mummy round these parts.
<wanders off pondering whether or not to start a campaign>

Foggles Sat 02-Mar-13 11:56:22

FreshWest I agree!! We need more cards with "Mam" on.

This year my mam's birthday is on mother's day so her house will be filled with cards & flowers. I struggle more each year though to think of a birthday gift. At 77, she's had a lot of birthdays grin
