Mumsnet threads about food which ended up descending into a row - does anyone remember cheesey champs?

It was a strange old thread - someone said she had found this recipe called cheesey champs - which was mashed potato, baked beans and cheese on top baked in an oven. The OP's husband said it was revolting and refused to eat it (which I would have done frankly, sounds grim). Anyway 50 percent of the thread said it was a terrible thing to cook, the other half said it was a perfectly good dinner, all the food groups represented grin, and there was a fair smattering of 'leave the bastards' because he was ungrateful.

It was a fun thread but I wonder if I dreamt it.

Food threads are always good for a row. Remember the aunt bessies roast spuds at christmas. And the oft said 'if you are too poor to buy free range chicken you should eat lentils'.

I remember the thread! I thought the showing was undeserved. Why would you suddenly get on with someone you didn't get on with before just because they're ill?! But then I am a hardfaced cuntbag. wink

Surely the annual 'make your own pancakes you lazy feckers' threads have been mentioned already?

They're great they are.

TeWiSavesTheDay Thu 28-Feb-13 15:54:15

I didn't see any this year. It made me oddly sad. confusedgrin

I like to go on the annual pancake threads and say I'm making American style pancakes. The outrage! grin

MrsGeologist Thu 28-Feb-13 16:48:10

American pancakes are better than fucking crepes.

A nice pancake stack with maple syrup and crispy bacon... Mmmmmmm.

Yes. I agree. Careful though, you'll cause a riot if people hear you called them crepes!

GetOrf Thu 28-Feb-13 17:21:30

Felnel that sounds lovely (sardines, pine nuts and sultanas). I also agree with you about icing - waste of fucking time and calories. I don't eat cake much (probably beccause I OD on stollen and assortments at Christmas, I am also huge come January grin) but when I do eat cake I am not wasting myself on bastarding icing. grin

CheerfulYank Thu 28-Feb-13 18:09:39

I love American pancakes, obviously. wink We don't have pancake day, we have Mardi Gras instead, I think? But here in the North we don't do much with Mardi Gras so maybe I'll do pancake day next year. smile

CheerfulYank Thu 28-Feb-13 18:12:39

Cake without frosting?! shock But...but why?

Pancake day is obviously a great idea, CheerfulYank. What better than a day when you can have pancakes for dinner?

We usually have pancakes with bacon, eggs and lots of maple syrup on a Sunday morning in this house.

Sneepy Thu 28-Feb-13 22:56:33

Cheerfulyank, they're talking about icing, not frosting. You know that hard, tasteless stuff on cakes that look like castles & handbags & whatnot? Not buttercream, They prefer their cakes to look gorgeous and taste like air. Have you lived over here? Cake is a whole different ball game.

I get one meal from a chicken. My DP is a greedy fecker. Ill occasionally make stock from it, but I hate cleaning up afterwards.

I'd be in the market for frozen onions and herbs, but I draw the line at frozen mash. If there are no lumps then it's not BLARDY MASH.

Oh I hate the chicken threads. You cant get 12 12 portions from 1 chicken. What you get is a veggie roast, pie and soup with a slight chicken garnish!

shock at people not eating the icing - the waste! Send it my way (ideally with marzipan still attached, but I'm not fussy) and I will 'dispose' of it for you.

And am with Jenny on the mash - definitely needs lumps. grin

Erm, what's wrong with frozen veg please?

I'm weaning my pfb on the stuff, I haven't got the time to get anal about this, what with washing down the walls and floor after every meal <baby bloody led weaning my arse>, washing nappies, lentil weaving and all the other shite I'm putting myself her through.

Isn't it just fresh veg, frozen? Surely better than a freshly bought broccoli that's festered in the fridge for ten days?

CheerfulYank Fri 01-Mar-13 04:34:01

Oh that's a relief Sneepy. I was picturing mounds of delectable buttercream being tossed away.

Do you mean like fondant, is icing?

Tee2072 Fri 01-Mar-13 05:29:32

detox there is nothing wrong with frozen veg.

yank yes, fondant.

GetOrf Fri 01-Mar-13 13:18:07

Oh no cheerful, sorry to say I dislike all icing equally. grin I don't like cupcakes as I can't stand buttercream or the cake underneath. Fondant is horrible, anything that bendy should be an craft product not a food, and royal icing is awful. Also I don;t like plain sponge cake, any cake has got to have some stuff in it like fruit or nuts. I would rather have a bread roll tbh.

CheerfulYank Fri 01-Mar-13 15:24:29

Sigh. Well, it takes all kinds I suppose. grin

Each to their own but we are all allowed to take short cuts.
I make fresh Indian food everyday but cheat using garlic and ginger paste and passata rather than the fresh stuff. We mums work hard and do our best!
Also my sister makes fresh chappati everyday, I buy them and make fresh once or twice a week. The result being, sister is taken for granted by her family, my kids think its a real treat when they get the fresh ones. Again, whatever works for you smile

MarmaladeTwatkins Mon 04-Mar-13 15:11:51

You need to send some my way multitaskmama. Just so that I can be sure it's up to scratch.

Mumof3men Mon 04-Mar-13 17:39:33

I started reading this when I put the three chicken breasts in a jar of honey and mustard sauce into the oven (accompanied by a tray of frozen cocktail sausages so as not to waste the electricity). Having them with actifry chips-yum yum/
There is no way I could ever get two meals out of a chicken and there is only three of us at home now :-(
I now have about ten threads open that were linked in this one-will eat my dinner off a tray whilst dh watches tv and read them all.
(I work in a school and will be checking lunchboxes now for sushi rabbits and egg pikachus)

Mumof3men Mon 04-Mar-13 17:40:40

and we're not even having any veg, I shall throw dh a banana later
