I'm going to get my first tattoo done this summer. I want it on my ribs.
I have a quote from my favourite book .... but would that be quite pretentious or cool?

I think if it's a book that has meant something to you for a long time then it can be rather splendid. Especially in a charming and appropriate typeface.
If you're having Pg. 78 of Fifty Shades of Grey "Before I know it, hes got both of my hands in his viselike grip above my head, and hes pinning me to the wall using his lips..." then it is horrible and you shouldn't do it.
All my tats are designed by me and I lived with them as doodles in notebooks, scraps of paper on the wall, redesigning and reworking for a long time before I had them done.
I plan on telling my baby that there will always be people who don't like tattoos, and people who do. Just make sure it's somewhere you can cover up in a job interview or on your wedding day.
Then go and borrow this book from your Library.
I'm having, "I thought I was enamoured with an ass," from A Midsummer Night's Dream as part of me next tattoo.
Home improvements are eating my tattoo budget though.

Depends on the quote I guess.
I like tattoos. My cousin absolute twat has rubber dingy rapids tattooed on his abdomen. If its like that then no, dont do it!

Think I've decided not to get it now.
I have a text tattoo on my leg. Its in Latin and reads Luceo non Uro 'I shine not burn' and is below a line drawing. Both are things that mean a lot to me and has reminded me to keep going in bad times (I suffer episodic, severe chronic pain). Its also a quote/ motto from one of my favorite books 'Cross stitch/ Outlander' by Diana Gabaldon. I had it done at age 42 so not a spontaneous decision.
I don't give a flying fuck what anyone else thinks about it. Its very rarely out in public anyhow.

There was a very funny thread on here by someone whose b-i-l had a lovely new quotation tattoo which he was very proud of but which had a spelling mistake (or was a mis-quote, I can't remember).
We all discussed possible ways of pointing out the mistake so as to cause the most possible embarrassment.
It was fun
.
I don't know if she ever did tell him though.

I would have thought the description pretentious tattoo would have been a direct contradiction in terms tbh.
If you want it then do it...who gives a flying fuck what anyone else thinks?! It's your body not theirs!

Whatever you get, don't get 'Only God Can Judge Me'. They are the WORST, naff and incorrect as I think you'll find I can quite easily judge anyone who has that tattooed on their body.
Yep, so long as it's correctly spelt and not a naff quotation, go for it.
I am not a big tatoo fan (because I am a monumental wuss about pain), but I know someone who has 'non omnis moriar' (I shall not wholly die), which I really loved. I suspect tats in Latin are pretentious but also, ooh, very cool.

Ouch to the ribs! The lady who tattooed DP told us that she as an unfinished tattoo on her ribs that she has had three attempts to get it finished but can't handle the pain
Id like to get Fuck it, shit happens tattooed on me as I say it a lot but think it needs censoring or translated to Latin so sounds/looks better

As long as it's not from a Twilight or 50 Shades book then you have my wholehearted support. I like quote tattoos
they have to either be in English (or whatever language you speak) or maybe Latin (if they originated in Latin) though, I don't understand why people have quotes in a random foreign language tattooed on themselves. Unless it's from, say, a French song or something.

Why is it daft?
Because I think it is. be original and different and keep your body tattoo free would be my advice.
However, I am not you. And if YOU like it, then you should do it.

Oh and it sounds obvious, but make sure it's a direct and accurate quote! It annoys me to no end when I see people with misquotes inked on themselves. It normally happens with Shakespeare quotes on people who have never actually read the play, or people who have seen the film but not read the book.

It's not Latin or Chinese, its from the book On The Road by Jack Kerouac.
There was nowhere to go but everywhere, so just keep on rolling under the stars.
Oh, I like that.
I'm not a fan of his writing but I think that is a lovely quotation, and not pretentious.
Btw ... I know I should be in pedants' corner, and I know this is a minor, minor issue, and I am massively anal, but, but ...
IT'S A QUOTATION. IT IS NOT A QUOTE. A 'quote' may well be what you get from the builder. A quotation is what you make from a work of literature.
<and breathe>
I quite like that!
I do love tattoos and cant wait to get my 3rd
