I could eat chips, gravy and cheese about now.

Maybe just the chips.
Or a chicken and mushroom pie.
Or a jacket potato with beans and cheese.

All main-stays of my secondary school canteen. I have had flu and no appetite for a week - still can't taste much - but the thought of dinner lady food makes me consider eating again smile

I went to pack ups eventually, there's only so much stodge a girl can take.

What did you eat at school?

Shellington Sun 24-Feb-13 23:35:58

How could I forget the toasties shock
Beans and cheese inside - volcanic temperature but amazingly goey and good!

Shellington Sun 24-Feb-13 23:46:01

Gutted we got rid of our toastie machine now. First thing I've fancied eating
in nearly a week!

Pizzas made on half a roll

Sausage rolls

Chocolate cake and banana custard

Shellington Sun 24-Feb-13 23:51:23

Oh yeah- think we had those too, like half a baguette?
I liked the jam sponge and custard too smile

Ponderingonaquandry Sun 24-Feb-13 23:52:33

Nope literally on half a roll like a crusty bap. The tomato sauce had onions in and was really tasty.

pizza on half a breadcake
jam and cornflake tart and custard
chocolate cake and chocolate custard
chicken pie
cheese flan
dumpling pie

mmmmm school dinners smile

willoughboobs Sun 24-Feb-13 23:56:28

oooh and friday fish & chips smile

Shellington Sun 24-Feb-13 23:56:29

All very tasty carbs! I remember the teachers could just swoop in and go to the front of the queue though hmm

I had a jumbo sausage and chips in Scarborough today. They were swimming in vinegar and salt. Beat meal ever!

Shellington Mon 25-Feb-13 00:25:06

Now was that a battered sausage, SP?

It was not. It should have been though

That's poutine...

Are you Canadian OP? <narrows eyes>

Chips and gravy should be illegal!

DollySisterDoesntLikeHerDiet Mon 25-Feb-13 00:53:43

At primary school we were allowed ice-cream with custard on.

Very delicious and had to be eaten before the main or the custard would melt the ice-cream smile

At secondary school the pizza was home made on a thick doughy base and very filling. There was also home-made caramel shortbread. If it had just been made it would still be soft and gooey.

Mmm. I loved school dinners.

ripsishere Mon 25-Feb-13 00:57:44

I would love some chips and gravy, not so sure about the cheese too.
My school dinners were rank. The alternative was to go to the baker, buy a bloomer loaf with your friend, have it cut in half, pull the filling out and either get it filled with soup or chips.
Fucking lush. I haven't thought about that for years.

Sole, are you one of them < lowers voice > southerners? What eats strange forrin foods like jellied eel and pie with licker? Gravy is essential with chips otherwise what's the point? It would be like bangers without mash, toad without the hole, Ant without Dec...

< Grabs hard hat and runs away >

wink

SoleSource Mon 25-Feb-13 01:11:15

Dolly grin Midlands

I love saveloys, ooh gosh yum!

DollySisterDoesntLikeHerDiet Mon 25-Feb-13 01:17:13

Sole, Midlands?

<nods sagely>

Yep, I knew you'd be one of them southerners wink.

ripsishere Mon 25-Feb-13 01:20:25

Saveloys are the end. They are pure shite. I am a southerner and love pie and mash and liquor (it's made from the boiling eel juice and parsley). Only to be eaten with vinegar and spoon/fork.
My DH shamed me by asking for HP and a knife. A fucking knife.

DollySisterDoesntLikeHerDiet Mon 25-Feb-13 01:43:33

grin @ knife.

Eel juice? Eeuw. I'll definitely stick to gravy. Or maybe mushy peas. But probably gravy.

Yotamsrazor Mon 25-Feb-13 01:53:56

I'm just starting with a cold. Can't sleep as too bunged up. Have just had Options hot chocolate and 2 slices of soda bread. What I'd REALLY like are some cheddars. OR fish and chips. OR chicken pie (cannot remember ever having had chicken pie before, but bet it would be lovely and could just fancy that).
At school we had: roast lamb, very liquidy mint sauce, mashed potato, mashed swede and gravy. And spam fritters. Little wrinkly sausages, gravy and mash. Livery and onions. Salad. Fish on friday. Savoury scone with stew. For pud: spotted dick and custard, chocolate pudding and pink custard, coconut sponge and chocolate custard, semolina/tapioca/ rice pudding with jam. Ice cream and wafers. I used to love nearly everything except the tapioca and the liver.
Oh now I could just eat some school sausages and mash!

ripsishere Mon 25-Feb-13 03:08:27

I don't even like fish. The liquor is essential. It's a green, jizz like consistency with the taste of ambrosia.
I'm not really selling it am I?

blondieminx Mon 25-Feb-13 04:32:32

I'm a southener but would prefer gravy with chips by a mile!

I really fancy jam sponge and custard after reading this thread!

ripsishere Mon 25-Feb-13 04:34:47

Definitely, I wasn't suggesting liquor and chips. That would just be wrong. I am currently defrosting a roti and some dahl.
I would much prefer some chips and mushy peas and strong vinegar.
