From Piano Man
"It's nine o'clock on a Saturday
The Regular crowd shuffles in
There's an old man sitting next to me
Makin' love to his tonic and gin
He says, "Son, can you play me a memory
I'm not really sure how it goes
But it's sad and it's sweet and I knew it complete
When I wore a younger man's clothes."
You can just picture the scene. Which lyrics are really poignant for you?
Undervalued Roxy Music, Dance Away. Terrific song.
So many possibles, I can only think of artists now that've already been mentioned. I find Billy Joel's Allentown really poignant esp since DH was made redundant - about people out of work in a dying community. Also, Robbie Williams's Make Me Pure is wrenchingly self-loathing.
Bit of a sad one this
I know someday you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be a star.
In somebody else's sky, but why can't it be mine?
Black by pearl jam, first song that came on my mp3 while I was in hospital with an ectopic pg.
Also the entirety of pinks song 'perfect' means a lot to me.
I'll try to think of some cheerier ones.
The lyrics to "shadow of the day" by linkin park
and
"when my time comes
forget the wrong that I've done
help me leave behind some
reasons to be missed
and dont resent me
and when you're feeling empty
keep me in your memory
leave out all the rest, leave out all the rest"
also by linkin park.
I find most of their lyrics very poignant tbf though!
I'm just the pieces of the man I used to be Too many bitter tears are raining down on me I'm far away from home And I've been facing this alone For much too long I feel like no-one ever told the truth to me About growing up and what a struggle it would be In my tangled state of mind I've been looking back to find Where I went wrong Too much love will kill you If you can't make up your mind Torn between the lover And the love you leave behind You're headed for disaster 'cos you never read the signs Too much love will kill you Every time I'm just the shadow of the man I used to be And it seems like there's no way out of this for me I used to bring you sunshine Now all I ever do is bring you down How would it be if you were standing in my shoes Can't you see that it's impossible to choose No there's no making sense of it Every way I go I'm bound to lose Too much love will kill you Just as sure as none at all It'll drain the power that's in you Make you plead and scream and crawl And the pain will make you crazy You're the victim of your crime Too much love will kill you Every time Too much love will kill you It'll make your life a lie Yes, too much love will kill you And you won't understand why You'd give your life, you'd sell your soul But here it comes again Too much love will kill you In the end... In the end.
Listening to Freddie mercury sing this on my cd made me wonder if he knew he was going to.die and that makes me feel sad. What a talent he jade
Maria - say it loud and there's music playing
Say it soft and it's almost like praying
Leonard Bernstein, West Side Story
Agree with Fire and Rain and Witchita Lineman.
Also
And then one day you find
Ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run
You missed the starting gun
I have an excellent father
His strength is making me stronger
I was listening to a Taylor Swift album (I know, I know) and was taken by surprise by this song. My dad is not a nice man and the song made me catch my breath ad sob on a 23 mile car journey because it just seemed so unfair that she had that and I didn't.
"I think it's because I'm clumsy
I try not to talk too loud
Maybe it's because I'm crazy
I try not to act too proud
They only hit until you cry
After that you don't ask why
You just don't argue anymore"
Luka by Suzanne Vega. The whole song gets you.
Pretty much the whole of Forever Young by Bob Dylan
'Slipping through my fingers all the time I try to catch her every minute' ...
funny how most people have chosen such bittersweet lyrics.
When faced with my demons I clothe them and feed them.
Catatonia.
We all have wings, but some of us don't know why.
I know it is only inxs, but poetry sometimes happens in unexpected places.
'I wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then'
'nobody said it was easy, but no one ever said it would be so hard'
sorry, should have credited ABBA with slipping through my fingers (though I am sure you all know already!).
Do you realise that you have the most beautiful face?
Do you realise we're floating in space?
Do you realise that happiness makes you cry?
Do you realise that everyone you know, someday, will die?
But instead of saying all of your goodbyes, let them know that life goes fast
It's hard to make the good things last
You realise the sun sun doesn't go down
It's just an illusion caused by the world going round.
(Flaming Lips, Do you Realise?)

When I need a friend it's still you (Freak Scene , Dinosaur JR)
Kate Nash 'the nicest thing'. Made me realise that I should get with DH.
He is the nicest thing (even when annoying me) and makes me feel a million times better than I did in previous relationships.
Also second the song by Athlete song 'wires' always extremely appropriate in this house and makes me properly cry everytime I hear it.
It only takes one tree to make a thousand matches
It only takes one match to burns thousand trees.
And
He'll always be 23, yet the train runs on and on
Past the place they found his clothing
There's no mistake, I smell that smell
It's that time of year again, I can taste the air
The clocks go back, railway track
Something blocks the line again
And the train runs late for the first time
Today
Both stereophonics.
Also killing me softly gets me every time.
There's a Prince song called Sweet Baby that changed my life. I was in a difficult relationship and this gave me the push I needed to get out of it.
Two lines - 'How can you sleep knowing you and a fool sing in the same key?'
and 'What's more important, him or the broken pieces of your heart?'
Double nominations for This woman's work.
Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt
' What have I become, my sweetest friend - everyone I know goes away in the end...and you can have it all, my empire of dirt, I will let you down, I will make you hurt...but if I could start again, a million miles away I would keep myself I would find a way''
and I adore Editors' lyrics particularly sung acoustically (an end has a start)
' When you caught my eye I saw everywhere I'd been and wanna go to...'

also love chorus of Doves Kingdom of Rust Beatles In my Life and Peter Gabriel's In your eyes
Not poignant - but life changing
I am what I am
And what I am needs no excuses
I deal my own deck
Sometimes the aces sometimes the deuces
It's one life and there's no return and no deposit
One life so it's time to open up your closet
Life's not worth a dam till you can shout out
La Cage aux Folles
"If I could just relax, then I could admit
I don't know what I want, but this is not it.
If I could just recall the dreams I had as a kid,
If I could just relax, if I could let my guard slip,
I'd be such a winner."
From 'Must Try Harder' by Frank Turner
If I could, I would give you the world
But how can I, when you won't take it from me
I put you on a pedestal, you put me on the pill
"If I had three lives I'd marry her in two" Melbourne, The Whitlams
I can't remember if I cried when I read about his widowed bride, but something touched me deep inside the day the music died.
