Hop on and off red bus tours great value in both Cities. More than one route so get a pass for a couple of days.

There is a lovely bar at the top of La Ramblas in Barcelona called Boadas which does amazing cocktails. The barmen are really friendly too - my sister and her friends ended up going out clubbing with them when they were in Barcelona.

I love Edinburgh. It's a great city. Do take a bus tour (the red one is best). They all leave from outside Waverley train station (just off Princess Street).
Abbey Hotel is a lovely B&B with a nice garden area. The breakfast was great and the owners were friendly. It's not luxiourious so depends on what you want for your honeymoon. Easy walk to Princess Street. A Taste of Italy is a nice little restaurant about 2 minutes from Abbey Hotel. Great food at a cheap price. Looks like a cafe from the outside but it's lovely food.

Visit the Scottish Parliament - you can even go in and see the debating if it's on (free of charge). The National Museum of Scotland was excellent and there are some animal bits your son will like. Obviously there is the Castle too and there is a national history museum called Dynamic Earth which is supposed to be good for kids (not sure what age).

For gorgeous views visit Carlton Hill. Avoid the zoo. It is absolutely rubbish. I barely saw any animals at all when I went. I haven't been since the pandas were there but doubt it's got any better. Look at trip advisor for reviews.

Seriously, I worked for Edinburgh Tourist Office when I was a student and we used to find people accommodation in places like Dundee and Glasgow in August as Edinburgh was FULL. NO VACANCIES.

I love Edinburgh! It's been a coule of years since my last visit, so maybe out of touch a bit but tigerlilys is a fab place for a cocktail, as is the dome.
The whole place is just wonderful,
Do a whiskey tour and tasting next to the castle.... Nice place to eat eeverywhere!
We took a train to either south or north queens ferry (can't remember) and had a lovely meal looking up at the Firth of Forth bridge. Can't remember name of hotel, sorry!

GirlOutNumbered Sat 23-Feb-13 19:44:46

Oh and I had to buy another coat up there as it was SO COLD!

Euphemia Sat 23-Feb-13 19:46:50

I was in Edinburgh last Monday - I studied and lived there for years and I really miss it.

The National Museum of Scotland is great - free admission and very interactive.

Botanic Gardens for a run about/kick about in the autumn leaves.

zukiecat Sat 23-Feb-13 19:46:59

Never mind Dundee or Edinburgh,

Come to Aberdeen instead!

Beautiful old granite buildings, and good shopping smile

And Rowies!

Incognito if you are going to Edinburgh in August you need to get your hotel booked NOW! The festival will be on which will make for a great visit but everywhere will be full
