I am watching this film for the first time. I'm enjoying it more than I thought I would I haven't usually got the attention span for epics but I am finding the dialogue quite hard to follow.
Scarlett O'Hara speaks to quickly and as for those Deep South accents for all the staff.... Oddly, Scarlett's father seems to have a bad Irish accent

My all time face film. I cry every time. Words cannot cover my love.
I might watch it later!

Blimey - I assumed Olivia De Havilland was dead!
She stood up for female actors rights didnt she and had trouble finding studios who would hire her I think?

Sorry SoleSource, it's on DVD.
My oh my what IS Scarlett wearing to beg $300 from Rhett? I don't think I'd give her $300 draped in that curtain either

Needs must - the curtains were all she had after all!

Love GWTW, but the sequel was dire.
That's the curtain dress!

This book/film are the reason I did my degree - American Studies.
The racist and misogynist undertones were lost on me aged 12, just sparked an avid interest in American history which continues to this day, 28 years later.

The book is indeed better. Her infatuation with Ashley is very odd when Rhett is clearly far more interesting but I've always thought she only wanted Ashley because she was so conceited and therefore felt he had no right to marry someone else.
The book is far better than the film.
Never read the sequel - could not bear to, it's such a perfect ending.
Fascinating entry about her & her love of erotica

Olivia de havilland was Joan Fontaines sister. Joan Fontaine was considered for the role of Scarlett.
I remember being quite upset when I heard about Vivien Leigh's incredibly difficult life. She had mental health issues - bi polar I think although that was not a common term when I read about it. But people just dismissed her as highly strung and difficult.
Hers was the manic episode that formed a chunk of David Nivens book The moons a balloon - although he never named her.
So sad.
It's not the perfect ending, it's horrible, devastating, such a loss but I guess 'the only way it could end. It's my absolute favourite favourite film and I worship the ground Vivien Leigh walks on.
Though I am yet to see a street car named desire, in which she gives an equally devastating performance as Blanche. It's on my to do list.
YY to the book being better than the film.
The question is are you a Scarlett or a Melanie? One of the ways the ya-ya's catorgerise people!
She is great in a street car. So fragile.

Oh , I remember now that she was Joan Fontaines sister!
I also watched a documentary about Vivien Leigh and her illness. She was married to Laurence Olivier.
She was so beautiful.

Oh the sequel was terrible, I agree. It gets all New-Agey and Scarlett's feistiness and not-very-niceness gets neutered so by the end she's quite wet.
I read some interesting biographies of Margaret Mitchell. She was a journalist in the 20s and quite feminist in her lifestyle.

I remember that Olivia de Havilland is Joan Fontaine's sister, obviously.
I love GWTW, my all time favourite film,
The book is even better though, with far more detail than even the film.
I love Mammy, and one of my favourite quotes from the book is when she is chastising Scarlett for "showin yer bosoms before noon"
"It ain't fittin fer yous to be showin them bosoms, Miss Scarlett, it ain't fittin"
Afternoon is fine apparently.
Oh and I agree the sequel is dire!
It gets so far away from the character of Scarlet than is possible.
As if Scarlett would happily go digging the tatties up in Ireland, and enjoying it
It's not the perfect ending, it's horrible, devastating, such a loss but I guess 'the only way it could end.
And that is what does make it the perfect ending, rather than a happy one.

The line that DD and I giggle at is something like, "Why Mr Frank now don't you look dashing in that new set of whiskers!"

I mourn the demise of the dashing whiskers.
Whiskers aren't what they used to be.

I'll admit, when last I read it aged about 16, I loved the sequel!
Really didnt enjoy the film though, have read the book quite a few times and it just doesnt compare at all.
(Gosh I'm controversial
)
My favourite film ever, but yes to the book being so much better. I was stunned to find no children in the film. I would have liked to have been Scarlett o'Hara but knowing my luck I would have just been a maid ho hum !
