Missed a pill, help me work out what the risk is.

Just in case anyone was wondering (or this helps anyone else out) the FPA advice line say there is no risk from sex before a missed pill with Cerazette as the main way it works is by thickening mucus in the cervix, not by preventing ovulation. There would be no risk in me taking Levonelle for peace of mind, however.

Worth it for peace of mind!

Cerazette is taken with no breaks. Been taking it for about three months. Going to ring FPA when they open, if there's no risk involved then I'd rather pay the £25 and take Levenolle.

How far we're you into your packet when you missed a pill? If 7 days or more then you are pretty much ok. I'm not going to say completely ok but I heard from a sexual health nurse that you can safely miss one in the middle week with no loss of protection.

Right, on the Levonelle website it says 72 hours after unprotected sex OR a contraceptive mishap. It's less than 72 hours after the missed pill.

Yes, best taken within 72 hours, earlier the better.

Obviously far too late for emergency contraception?

EMUZ Thu 21-Feb-13 00:15:22

I think it's a v v slim chance. I missed a pill on Cerazette and pharmacist told me risk was only missing two pills or more

Honestly, the chance is tiny. Just don't panic!

Shit sad

Yes, there is a chance you could be pregnant. lady is in the wrong order, for what little it's worth.

You had sex then missed the pill. Sperm can live for quite a long time inside you, and you could in theory then ovulate.

It's not the same as if you missed a pill, then had sex. As I understand it.

I think the chance is very tiny either way, but if you're worried, see the GP or get an early test?

Thanks Lady stark, that's what I thought but am panicking. I have no idea how I could have missed it, I've never done that before.

LadyStark Thu 21-Feb-13 00:01:23

Actually, make that 48 hrs of additional contraception, see here: www.nhs.uk/chq/Pages/2605.aspx?CategoryID=117 doesn't change anything regarding your situation though.

If you miss a pill you need to use additional contraception for the next 24 hours (if you miss by more than 12 hours). If you had sex Sat and then missed pill on Tue then you should be fine.

Read the instructions in the packet!

It's a long time since I've been on the pill, but IIRC for the one I was on you had to take it for 7 days in a row before it started working, so possibly you could be at risk.

Read the instructions or speak to your doctor/pharmacist if in doubt.

Bit late for emergency contraception... There's always a chance, it's probably tiny, but it's there... Could you speak to your gp at all?

HandlebarTash Wed 20-Feb-13 23:50:53

On Cerazette, have just realised I missed Tuesday's pill completely. We had sex on Saturday night.

Is there any chance I could be pregnant, or is this just if you have unprotected sex after the missed pill? I CANNOT get pregnant so I want to know if I need emergency contraception.

Help sad
