Are there any bits of road you avoid?

I've been driving for years and although I don't love it I'm generally ok. But there are some bits of road I am terrified of and avoid if I can:
- Coventry inner ring road - terrifying chicane
- Aston expressway, Birmingham -baffling
- Leicester city centre - all of it is like a cryptic puzzle!
Is there anyone else like this? And if so where do you avoid so I can compile a list of driving terror zones!

Potholes!

Sparklingbrook Wed 20-Feb-13 17:58:07

Well I used to not like driving round City Centres I didn't know. But since I have been on ADs I don't mind at all. Make of that what you will. confused

Yes I completely avoid the A130 it's a long straight fast road with no barriers and the only accidents that happen on it are serious ones - I use the back country lanes instead.

And there is anther road that I avoid for the same reasons but I don't know the name of it.

Bits of roads with potholes! Impossible task. In slowish traffic I find myself looking at the road surface more than I ever used to. It's very, very bad round here and my car only has little wheels.

Sheffield city centre!

CalpolInMyEar Wed 20-Feb-13 18:00:08

I despise Edinburgh city centre and would honestly rather cut off my hands than drive there with the tram works on, fortunately there are pretty good buses there.

Otherwise I'm not bad, the M8 used to scare me after a near miss but then I went to Jordanhill while living in Edinburgh so I had to get over it quick!

Fantastic have added Sheffield, A130 and Edinburgh to my list but doubt I can do much about potholes as there's a big one just outside my drive.

I have a friend that will not drive on the M25. We live in East Anglia so if she wants to go south of here she's pretty screwed!

I'll drive most places, but dislike roads I don't know in the dark.

I drive anywhere tbh. I get that unfamiliar roads can be daunting but there's enough technology around to help now that I'm not really that sympathetic with those who won't drive on motorways etc. if you're so much of a nervous driver that you don't like speed/junctions/overhead signage then I think you should reconsider driving altogether.

The Expressway in Brum is easy. Not sure how it can be baffling.

Unfamiliar country lanes in the dark with a tailgater. Don't like them.

Any Fenland road round my way, I hate the bumpy, twisty, single carriage bastards, give me a dual carriageway any day smile

Oh and country lanes that get narrower and narrower and then there's grass growing in the middle, and nowhere to pass for miles.

M25 anti-clockwise between M40 and M3. At rush hour.

Shame that's about the time I hit it if we go to DFs house.

kim147 Wed 20-Feb-13 18:29:04

And the A64 on a weekend summer day from about 3pm coming back from Scarborough.

But I know a back route.

ElectricSheep Wed 20-Feb-13 18:31:58

M6 north of Birmingham to say Manchester. Do it loads but boy is it hairy when wet or busy - so most of the time.

WhatAGoat Wed 20-Feb-13 18:33:53

Ah I agree with the coventry ring road. Who ever invented that had no brain it's so dangerous.

Does that mean that you are not coming over then?

we have very high devon banks with hedges on top as well and lots of bends, sends some visitors into panic attacks.

I often drive through Edinburgh city centre when I go to visit my family, it can catch you out if they have changed the one way system in between visits,

I go up to Dore a lot, I hadn't noticed that Sheffield lay out was problematic, but these days I use a Tomtom,

I have a lovely collection of city maps, finding your way across a new city is fun.

I scare myself senseless on a bit of single track road, called Hell's Glen. I hate driving on it. However, I love being a passenger as the scenery is amazing!

The Motorway... completely..

BikeRunSki Wed 20-Feb-13 18:38:25

The A62 from Marsden ( W of Huddersfield) to Oldham, the Isle of Skye road. Friend crashed of it a couple of years ago and lost 7 years of memory. it's still missing. Makes me nervous!

slimshady Wed 20-Feb-13 19:02:09

I know that road well bike there are so many accidents aren't there?

HecateWhoopass Wed 20-Feb-13 19:06:34

I don't much care for the Whittington Moor roundabout in chesterfield. It goes 3-2-3 and whichever lane you're in - you're in the wrong lane grin You just have to put your foot down and hope for the best wink

I don't find sheffield city centre a problem, it's straightforward and not that busy for a city (if you avoid rush hour)

I do not like the magic roundabout in hemel hempstead.

MiaowTheCat Wed 20-Feb-13 19:18:58

I dislike the M1, unfortunately live on the M1 corridor and have a sat nav which apparently has a M1 fetish and would route me on it to go to Tescos given half the chance - I'll take the back ways locally to avoid it wherever possible.

Nottingham City Centre - after an experience when new to the area and I got stuck on the ring road going around it for about an hour before I found the right turning to get OFF.

i try to avoid the kerb and going over the white lines in the middle
