....and this is their main source of calcium and other supplements. I tasted it myself and new formula is horrid compared to before.

MissisBoot Sun 30-Nov-08 10:11:38

Can you change to Neocate - it's slightly more palateable.

HoochieMommaFeelGood Sun 30-Nov-08 12:11:25

Oh great. I have been congratulating myself on getting the dts to finally accept straight Nutramigen (no mean feat when they are still breastfed so know how sweet that tastes in comparison). I did see a 'coming soon'-type leaflet in the last tin I opened saying that they are going to add more faddy bullshit long chain fatty acids. I also thought hmm as my dt2 is severely intolerant to fish...

mumzi88 Sun 30-Nov-08 15:55:38

does anybody know if this formula is safe for vegatarians?

ToughDaddy Sun 30-Nov-08 17:18:34

Just back....

oh no Hoochie- we have a fish allergy as well. I will persevere a little as we did eventually overcome the last "taste change" but this one seems worst!

We can tell to leave taste as is on here

Mumzi- nothing specially mentioned about vegetarian - just had a look on tin- so worth emailing them on the website above or call them on 01895 523 764. I hope it is as it has served us very very well in the past. The nutritionist seemed to favour it above alternatives because on high content. She is pleased that out 9 year old is still on Nutramigen 2.

MissisBoot- Thnks, will look into Neocate

ToughDaddy Sun 30-Nov-08 17:20:42

should be "We can tell the company to revert to the old taste on their website here"

HoochieMommaFeelGood Sun 30-Nov-08 18:43:14

Thanks for the link TD - I have also asked them about fish allergy and the new snake oil wondrous formulation. Will post any response here...

HoochieMommaFeelGood Mon 01-Dec-08 09:37:06

I got a reply from them.

Here are my comments:

I have noticed that new Nutramigen will have LCPs added. My daughter is severely intolerant to fish. Will it still be suitable for her? Have you considered the numbers of children with milk and soy allergy / intolerance that also have multiple food protein allergy / intolerance? Also, you are obviously aware that Nutramigen is fairly unpalatable. Given the difficulties I and many, many parents have getting their children to accept the taste, is it really neccessary to change the formulation again? Many thanks in advance for your reply.

Here was their response:

At present there has been a delay in adding LCP's into Nutramigen and we do not have a release date until end of next year.

Kind regards,
Sophie

hmm

ToughDaddy Mon 01-Dec-08 20:26:01

Thanks. I just realised that we are using Nutramigen 2. My guess is that you are using Nutramigen 1?

ToughDaddy Mon 01-Dec-08 20:31:54

I am sending them the batch number to check whether it is just a problem with the batch.

Have you considered asking them to let you and other MNers to test the new formula before the go live?

ToughDaddy Mon 01-Dec-08 20:38:27

I suggested to them that they some how use MN to communicate with Allergy parents. I also told them that my 6 year old suggested that they have a 1 year transition period (after consultation) if they were ever to try to change formula.

kalo12 Mon 01-Dec-08 20:42:55

HIJACK - sorry for this, but you seem experienced - my ds 10 mth won't touch neocate and I am wondering if I drink it myself will the benefits pass through breast milk?

kalo, if you're breastfeeding your ds will be fine!
esp if he is having good solids too

ds2 is dairy and egg intolerant and fully bf and not having any probs, wouldn't have occured to me to try formula with him.
he'll be getting all the goodness from you in the breastmilk, so don't worry

kalo12 Mon 01-Dec-08 20:51:54

he doesn't eat solids, occasionally banana rice pudding or a rice cake but thats it, its really stressing me and i don't have much milk cos i'm very underweight now, so i'm worried he's not getting enough nutrients

ToughDaddy Mon 01-Dec-08 20:59:11

Kalo- agree with thisisyesterday that the baby will get what he/she needs. My understanding is that YOU are more likely to be undernourished. You must ensure that you are healthy for your own sake. Women risk osteoporosis for example.

thisisyesterday- yes, 3DCs are all seriously dairy/egg allergic. We have kept them on Nutramigen for all their post BF lives!

kalo12 Mon 01-Dec-08 21:05:49

i've had to cut out lots from my diet cos ds is sensitive to many things and just won't eat, and i was slim anyway but now finding it hard to keep from dropping any more.

i've just hd an ounce of it with some rice dream, it wasn't bad, seeing as he won't take it andd i had to pay for it myself might as well.

thanks for your reassurances smile

ToughDaddy Mon 01-Dec-08 21:21:25

After yers of paying for Nutramigen (GBP14 a tin) for DC1 we decided to ask for prescriptions. The rate 3DCs consume it at, we are probably saving a fortune.

HoochieVirginMomma Tue 02-Dec-08 09:30:24

Kalo - I fully sympathise. I have cut out egg, gluten, dairy, fish, shellfish, nuts and soya out of my diet for the past <<checks calendar>> 16 or so months, all to continue breastfeeeding my twins, one of whom is dairy / soy intolerant and the other who has the full works listed above, plus pork (which I never eat anyway).

It is difficult to keep the weight on bf with so many restrictions; I have seen a dietician at the hospital when my dt2 has visited the consultant for her intolerances. She basically congratulated me on managing so well to find an appropriate diet for us all without any prior nutritional education!

I eat LOADS of food - I literally graze and snack all day. Pulses, beans, lentil pates and hummous by the tubful with endless packets of rice or corn cakes, (was wary at first due to sesame but now dt2 even eats it herself with no ill effects) avocados, and the babies eat tons of lamb, chicken and turkey.

Like toughdaddy, when the twins hit one I stopped expressing for them for when they are at nursery (4 days a week) and now when they are there they have 6oz Nutramigen (1) on prescription daily and are fully breastfed the rest of the time. I'm still on the exclusion diet and tbh it's second nature now. I have become a very inventive cook and if you would like any of my recipes or to just chat to someone for some moral support, please let me know My email address is helen-b at talk21 dot com .

HoochieVirginMomma Tue 02-Dec-08 09:31:50

Oh and loads of buckwheat / quinoa.

I guess if you want then the Neocate won't do you any harm - but doesn't it taste completely vile?!

kalo, I've also had to cut out quite a lot. well, seeing as I was veggie to start with I am now basically vegan, breastfeeding and also pregnant! eep

anyway, as I understand it your body will nourish baby first and you second. your milk will always be good quality- people in 3rd world countries can raise incredibly healthy breastfed babies, despite having hideous diets themselves and even being malnourished.
you would have to be severely malnourished for it to begin to effect your milk.

as you say though, you may as well have it now you've bought it, but I honestly wouldn't worry

HoochieVirginMomma Tue 02-Dec-08 11:18:44

...Erm, just noticed in one of my posts further up I have said 'like Toughdaddy I stopped expressing...' I have no knowledge of TD's ability to express breast milk, just that he like I get Nutramigen on prescription...

lol hoochie!

ToughDaddy Tue 02-Dec-08 22:00:17

Thisis and Hoochie- men can breastfeed if they try hard enough! I just haven't tried hard enough.

kalo12 Wed 03-Dec-08 10:54:02

thanks hoochie, i will. completely running out of breakfast ideas and oven chips are becoming a staple blush

HoochieVirginMomma Thu 04-Dec-08 12:40:29

Ah, the old oven chips fallback... I know it well grin
