as the title says grin

I kind of want to get it all down and back to normal in our flat!! itching for a good sort out and move around!!

but feel bad about taking it all down, as dd loves it!

ShoeWhore Fri 27-Dec-13 23:27:50

Sometime after New Year's Day but before 6th Jan.

It's a bit early yet fgrin

Blu Fri 27-Dec-13 23:28:19

Not til after new year !
You can't take it down yet!

MoreThanChristmasCrackers Fri 27-Dec-13 23:30:15

If you leave it until New Year, it will be worth the wait and you'll crack on far quicker ime.
We take ours down on Jan 1st, New Year and huge blitz and De clutter.

JingleHumps Fri 27-Dec-13 23:31:32

As soon as poss after NY, but we only have a little tree. I can imagine if I'd gone large I'd be ready now...

Mrswellyboot Fri 27-Dec-13 23:34:16

I am itching too, so tomorrow I am going to thin them out, take away santa statue etc, just leave tree and some candles.

NoComet Fri 27-Dec-13 23:34:48

The day after 12 night usually. Depends when school goes back. I like to do it minus DDs. Originally because I have a lot of glass stuff. Now they are old enough simply because it makes me sentimental.

Outside lights go off on 12 night and come down WP (weather permitting over the next few week ends)

I've taken mine down tonight as DS2 is due on Monday and it'll be one less thing to do if he does arrive soon.

Normally it'd be just after new year, though if we end up with a birthday over Christmas I may have to rethink that in the future!

LeafyGreen13 Fri 27-Dec-13 23:35:42

Yesterday blush

I'm abroad though. I'm supposed to put up New Year decorations but I haven't got a clue about them and DH isn't bothered so I never do. The tree was in the way a bit and it looked a little sad.

NoComet Fri 27-Dec-13 23:36:48

I cannot understand why people want to take them down a second before they have too, but I guess their are weird people who clean other than for visitors.

Same queer people who iron!

everydayaschoolday Fri 27-Dec-13 23:50:53

I want mine down…. and I iron! fgrin

DisneyAddict88 Fri 27-Dec-13 23:54:19

ok maybe tomorrow is a little early.....

will focus on bedrooms and hall cupboard this weekend, will try and keep it up till new year grin

DisneyAddict88 Fri 27-Dec-13 23:56:13

starball I dont iron, have a large supply of baby wipes for when those unexpected visitors say they are on their way over and I still want it down! !

PinkLemons Sat 28-Dec-13 00:00:58

I did it today as aware selling the house and have the photographer coming tomorrow. Usually around the 2nd jan.

Grockle Sat 28-Dec-13 00:01:44

Tomorrow, hopefully. I started thinning things out today but DS whacked the tree with his inflatable Dalek(!) and loads of decorations and needles fell off so tomorrow it is!

LeafyGreen13 Sat 28-Dec-13 00:12:31

Apparently Anna Wintour took hers down before Christmas as it was too messy.

callmekitten Sat 28-Dec-13 00:14:52

We keep ours up until Jan 6th. It usually comes down the weekend after.

NoComet Sat 28-Dec-13 00:16:07

I guess it also depends if it's in the way, which our tree very much isn't.

Also it was a fresh cut tree (living near several farms that let you walk into the field is cheating) that didn't go up until mid Dec, so it isn't making a mess.

Frozenatchristmas Sat 28-Dec-13 08:13:30

Tomorrow or may be Monday. We have a party today - 35 for curry anyone?

mumeeee Sat 28-Dec-13 14:15:01

On the 12th night still Christmas here. DD2 is still home and not going back to Kingston until tomorrow.

beanandspud Sat 28-Dec-13 14:34:07

I leave mine up until at least New Year and then it comes down shortly afterwards. Plan A is to do it on the 2nd when DH is working, otherwise it will be the 4th.

I have had a good tidy up today though, couldn't bear to see piles of things around the edge of the room any longer!

StickEmUpSideways Sat 28-Dec-13 14:36:57

I'm just about to do it.
I should add it's very minimal here, and we don't have children it's just me and DH.

Squeakygate Sat 28-Dec-13 14:45:15

1st or 2nd January. I have removed the advent calendars already though.

NoComet Sat 28-Dec-13 15:46:30

I'm going to have to read the piles of stuff, riot act, shortly.

DF has invited herself, her DH and her 2.25 yo DS for New Year.

My DDs are 12&15, he is the only person that small that ever visits. He's lovely and I still have lots of baby toys, but I also have a tree with about £200 worth of glass baubles.

I really don't want to take it down (DF is Jewish and I know she likes Christmas decorations, but feels guilty about putting them up at home).

A coffee table and chair barrier is going to have to be built and all presents are going to have to be tidied away.

curiousgeorgie Sat 28-Dec-13 15:59:06

I took one tree down yesterday and have just taken down the other two and banished everything christmassy to the loft.

I was hoping to do the outside lights etc today but its getting late so probably tomorrow.

Once Boxing Day is over I just want it all gone!

mumtosome61 Sat 28-Dec-13 16:02:33

I'm tempted to take it down before NY, but I know we will be here and it should stay up just for prosperity reasons after such an immensely shit festive season last year. I took it down the day after boxing day in 2012 and regretted it. I'll keep it up till the 2nd and down it will go.

It won't take long.

mumeeee Sat 28-Dec-13 16:03:41

curious why? It's still Christmas way after Boxing day. I've done a bit of tidying and hoovered today but thats it. Time to just relax

summerlands Sat 28-Dec-13 16:08:36

Just before Twelfth Night. It's only been up just over a week so am in no rush.

I don't blame those who put their trees up at the beginning of December for wanting to take them down sooner, however.

eandh Sat 28-Dec-13 16:12:29

Took ours down today firstly we had a leak and water down the wall behind the tree so need to get it cleaned and remained, it's dd2 birthday next week and I like a clutter free house for a few days before all the birthday decorations go up and having new flooring put down next week too!

KrabbyPatty Sat 28-Dec-13 16:14:35

1st or 2nd Jan. Much as I love the tree, it's dropping a bit and 6th jan is waaay too long.

summerlands Sat 28-Dec-13 16:18:07

In fact, on checking, our tree has only been up for approx six days!

PigeonPie Sat 28-Dec-13 16:26:52

Summerlands our tree has only been up since last Saturday too so we'll be leaving it all up till twelfth night and the crib will be up to as near Candlemas (2 February) as possible because I love it smile

MirandaWest Sat 28-Dec-13 16:29:07

6th January here. DC go back to school on the 7th so works out nicely smile

curiousgeorgie Sat 28-Dec-13 16:35:58

Just because I always think the Christmas trees look a bit sad after christmas is over...

I love getting rid of it all as the presents are sorted and put away, more space for DD to play, less clutter, the chance for a good clean. I'm like a regular Christmas elf before christmas, we go to so many shows, do an advent calendar of days out, hamper from elves, Christmas parties, go absolutely mad on presents.... but I just can't carry it on past Boxing Day wink

SantasTessTackle Sat 28-Dec-13 16:41:49

I just did mine blush
DD got a massive kitchen and a play tent. Just wanted the space desperately.

elQuintoConyo Sat 28-Dec-13 17:07:37

Ours went up on 20th, it'll come down on 7th once LO is back at nursery, I don't got back to work until 8th, so can spend that day packing it all away at leisure.

The tree is tucked into a corner so not in the way at all. And it is fake, so no shedding.

octopusinasantasack Sat 28-Dec-13 17:10:19

I would happily take it down on Boxing Day but will wait until 1st/2nd January.

HombreLobo Sat 28-Dec-13 17:16:57

Our two trees went up on the 22nd and they'll come down on 12th night

Florin Sat 28-Dec-13 17:20:56

Ours came down yesterday, I love putting it up in early December but by Boxing Day I am itching to get it down.

Ours went up on the 15th and will come down on the first Sunday in January (5th)? I like to do it when the children can help and then everything can be packed away before DS's birthday on the 8th. I'll miss it - I went for a mooch round the shops this afternoon and it was lovely driving home in the dark and seeing the trees lit up in people's houses. I think that for the first few days after it goes the house looks incredibly bare. Like elQuinto ours is tucked away (in the bay window) and is fake.

CremeEggThief Sat 28-Dec-13 17:55:02

We're taking it down next Saturday, when it will have been up for exactly four weeks.

PassAFist Sat 28-Dec-13 17:56:56

Ours came down yesterday. I would have done it on Boxing Day night except I was too tired!

NeverKnowinglyUnderstood Sat 28-Dec-13 17:58:12

we will do it on the 5th this year because the boys go back to school on the 6th and I want to have a good clean through once they go back

penguinplease Sat 28-Dec-13 18:00:01

Mine is all away and no trace of Xmas here, day after Boxing Day is the day I get shot of it all. It's not christmas anymore!

MirandaWest Sat 28-Dec-13 18:45:09

I think it's still Christmas. Twelve days of Christmas and all that. Children are off school and we're visiting relations at the moment.

Today. Don't like it hanging around once Boxing Day is over but we were away until today.

New Years Day here.

I want the red/gold/green Traditional Christmassey cosy-ness gone and replaced by the cool icy clean lines of silver/white/purple/ice-blue of New Year ( But only on the dining room table. Then that's gone on the 2nd)

LumpySpacePrincessOhMyGlob Sat 28-Dec-13 21:37:25

New Year's Day for us. I love my christmas decs and have them up for the month of December, start to finish. Like 70isaLimitNotATarget I like to embrace the new year in a clean environment.

Really looking forward to sitting down New Year's Day in a clear living room and watching Sherlock.

mathanxiety Sun 29-Dec-13 07:26:51

This is the year of the Great Christmas Tree Takedown in my home as we have a five month old kitten. She began her campaign as soon as the tree went up. I intend to remove what remains of it around the 4th as the crashing of ornaments is keeping me up at night.

kissmelittleass Sun 29-Dec-13 07:53:54

6th jan here I want them up for as long as poss..the thought of taking them down is depressing I hate january too long to wait for xmas againsad

ziggiestardust Sun 29-Dec-13 12:48:32

I'll take mine down next Sunday, the day before I go back to work and DS goes back to nursery smile

I'm away all this week though, and was away the week before Christmas, so I feel like I've hardly had any time to enjoy my decorations really sad

MABS Sun 29-Dec-13 13:18:38

all gone and big clean done, feel much better it all down.

jchocchip Sun 29-Dec-13 23:55:06

I'm a 12 days person. Christmas eve till 12th night...

MummyBeerestCupOfCheerest Sun 29-Dec-13 23:58:23

Put ours up on the 29th of November, and take it down on the 8th of January after the Ukrainians celebrate Orthodox Christmas.

lifesgreatquestions Sun 29-Dec-13 23:58:47

I leave mine up if its in good condition, but this years tree got taken down today, it was a mess, all dry. Very sad, I've left other decorations out, thing the lights add new years and"winter" lights so that the house still feels festive!

We took ours down the day after Boxing Day and it only went up a couple of days before Eve.

I'm done and back to work and we don't celebrate nye so best to get back to normality before school re starts imo.

Davros Mon 30-Dec-13 09:36:27

6th January. Never thought of doing it any other time. I suppose if I was going to work the next day I would do it that Sunday. I put a lot of effort into the decorations and they go up gradually so I want to make the most of them. I also think that "Christmastime" is the whole if December until 6th jan although our tree goes up mid-December. That's also why I won't shop until December, it just doesn't feel Christmassy. I may rethink that a little next year after reading the "lessons learned" thread!

mumeeee Mon 30-Dec-13 12:50:23

I'm not back at work until 6th Jan due to my Dad passing away in November and Mum not being well. Also DD3 doesn't go back to uni until 11th Jan, I just want to relax and try and enjoy the rest of Christmas not pack it all away. Although I am doing a bit of tidying and cleaning today.

wonderingsoul Mon 30-Dec-13 14:26:06

i normaly take it down 27th because ds2 birthday is the 28th.. but i kept the tree up this year.. only for ds2 to fall into the tree on his party.. so iv taken it all down today and i now hgave a clean and tidy house.

ready to see in the new year

wonderingsoul Mon 30-Dec-13 14:27:57

though ui have left my fairys lights on the mirror up and my dangly lights by the window up.

2kidsintow Mon 30-Dec-13 14:51:14

Mine comes down on the 1st Jan. By then it's been up for nearly a month as the DCs love it going up at the start of Jan.
I'm happy to see the back of it by then, but do like it still up for NYE.

LumpySpacePrincessOhMyGlob Mon 30-Dec-13 14:51:45

Taken it down today, coupla days earlier than I planned but it's a wild and woolly day so seemed the right time. I've left some lights up and bowls of pine cones. I've got candles everywhere so it's still cosy in the evening.

I usually leave them up until Twelfth Night, but they aren't going to make it this year. I've just had my pre-New Year cleaning frenzy and all of the Christmas candles and advent calendars etc have been put away so that I can dust. The cards and tree are still up, they will probably come down on Saturday as I want to keep them up for New Year but DH is back at work on the 2nd and 3rd and I need him to take the tree out as I have a bad back. I am back at work on the 6th and I want it all tidy and all the darned needles hoovered up by then!

toffeelolly Mon 30-Dec-13 16:49:53

Took mine down yesterday morning when dc were still in bed. like to get them down before new year and ds birthday is in 2 Jan so like all put away and tidied by then.wink wink

PosyNarker Mon 30-Dec-13 16:55:08

5th January [gavel]

LumpySpacePrincessOhMyGlob Mon 30-Dec-13 17:28:08

My tree was fabulous this year, barely shed at all. Looked as good going out as it did going in.

I have just put some twigs and fairy lights in the tree corner to compensate for lack of treeness. grin

Tigerbomb Mon 30-Dec-13 17:30:47

Mine went up Christmas Eve and it came down yesterday. It takes a hell of a lot less time to take down then it took to put up

YearsMidnight Mon 30-Dec-13 19:54:41

This is the first year I've wanted to take it down before first week in January! sad I don't know why, just feeling a bit down and also that I'd like some space back in the dining room. Tree went up a few days earlier than I'd planned - 15th, 16th? - but it's doing really well and isn't shedding needles at all, so I'd feel cruel taking it down now. DH has a birthday in early Jan and we normally have it up til then, so I think I'd have to see how he felt about losing his Christmas lights.

VerySmallSqueak Mon 30-Dec-13 19:58:27

Mine came down Saturday and they were lucky to last that long.

It looks so lovely and clear and tidy.

nipersvest Mon 30-Dec-13 20:00:07

it'll go either on the 1st or 2nd jan, dd's birthday is on the 6th and we like to try and separate that and xmas if we can.

atthestrokeoftwelve Mon 30-Dec-13 20:11:01

Down yesterday- all cards and wreath away too.

Happy New Year smile

Today is our Traditional Take Down the Decorations Day.

DD still asleep smile
DH watching something about Dr Who hmm
DS - well he's X-Boxing so no blardy help there

I'll finish my coffee and get on with it ...... <<sob>>

mumeeee Wed 01-Jan-14 11:24:07

70islimit I would just leave it until later or even the weekend and then get them to help you. Today is a lazying around day, We are all still in bed drinking coffee and tea. We will get up in a bit and have brunch,

Clutterbugsmum Wed 01-Jan-14 11:27:07

The week end, only because I can't be arsed to do it today. So it will be the weekend as dh needs to get boxes down from the loft, and put them back.

atthestrokeoftwelve Wed 01-Jan-14 12:03:27

Took them down on the 28th.
OH & I have been back at work since- only today off.

deirdrae Wed 01-Jan-14 16:52:06

Mine is all away and no trace of Xmas here, day after Boxing Day is the day I get shot of it all. It's not christmas anymore!

Christmas ends on 12th Night, surely?

That's when we take our Christmas decorations down.

deirdrae Wed 01-Jan-14 16:53:05

Yes, 5th January!

KrabbyPatty Wed 01-Jan-14 17:00:45

We took ours down today, it's now standing forlorn on the patio and our sitting room looks twice as big.

MaisyMoo123 Fri 03-Jan-14 23:13:11

Christmas starts on Christmas Day and lasts until twelfth night. People never used to put their decs up until Christmas Eve. It makes me a bit sad that people put them up so early that they're keen to take them down when the real Christmas period has only just started. I guess the focus has shifted to the (commercial) build up rather than the real Christmas-time which I can't help thinking is a shame. Each to their own though I guess - and I totally know that feeling of just wanting things put straight again. We put ours up the weekend before Christmas Day and it's up until after new year. We took it down on 2nd this year but it's not always that early.

We don't put our tree up until Christmas Eve as DD's birthday is 23 Dec and it doesn't go up until after that. We did put a bit of tinsel and some lights up when the DC broke up from school this year.

Just taken the decs down today, but wreath is still on the door, will be sad to see it go as we made our own this yr.
