let's see if we can find the best Christmas movie ever!

OLittleTownOfBarflehem Sun 08-Dec-13 13:35:34

My favourite is Santa Claus the movie. We watched it in the cinema when I was a little girl, it was my first cinema trip and we ate ice cream in little tubs.

Every year I watch it and enjoy it just as much as I did that first time.

Elf is a close second, then Christmas with the Kranks.

What's your favourite xmas film and why?

SPsWantsCliffInHerStocking Sun 08-Dec-13 13:38:15

Annabelle's Wish. That lovely little cow who dreams of been a reindeer and she gets the chance!

OLittleTownOfBarflehem Sun 08-Dec-13 13:43:59

Oh, I've not heard of that one!

<Adds to must watch list>

SPsWantsCliffInHerStocking Sun 08-Dec-13 13:44:46

Its great. You find yourself crying and cheering her on grin

It's a Wonderful Life is absolutely the best Christmas film ever.

It has everything - despair, redemption, joy, very funny.

OLittleTownOfBarflehem Sun 08-Dec-13 13:50:56

I've a feeling "its a wonderful life" will feature very highly. I watched it for the first time last year, and cried my eyes out fblush

Polar express.

Another one for Muppets Christmas Carol. I'm a big fan of Its a Wonderful Life but for me my go-to Christmas film will always be the Muppets. Michael Caine's finest hour also. You can keep Alfie and The Italian Job and Get Carter- they're all left in the shade once you've seen him bah humbugging around Victorian London with Gonzo.

goodasitgets Sun 08-Dec-13 14:10:35

Miracle on 34th street or Father Christmas (which nobody has ever seen but it's the same guy who did the Snowman and its ace)

HepsiBaubleMistletoes Sun 08-Dec-13 14:11:11

The newer one with Richard Attenborough in. We watched it twice yesterday, in succession blush, and will no doubt be watching it again today and most days for the next month

I'm also rather partial to the first Home Alone as well. It's on C4 later and I we will be watching it fosho.

DiseasesOfTheSheep Sun 08-Dec-13 14:15:03

Muppets Christmas carol, without a doubt.

I actively dislike It's a wonderful life. It sets my teeth on edge!!

MrsDeVere Sun 08-Dec-13 14:17:03

I know it was a flop but I can't help loving 'Nativity!'

I think its a future Christmas classic.

Elf of course.

Best thing about Christmas movies is that they don't have to be good. They just have to be comfy and familiar.

Richard attenborough is the perfect Kris Kringle.

yy to the Muppet Xmas Carol !! My favourite !

I'm watching it next Friday night while dh is on his Xmas do, along with Pringles and Philly smile

Can't wait !

I'm another fan of Muppet Christmas Carol. I love the songs!

LeBearPolar Sun 08-Dec-13 14:18:16

Home Alone - the original and the best. I love the combination of slapstick violence and the outwitting the burglars with the moment where he's in the church and sees the old man. And the ending of course.

And of course, Die Hard grin

LeBearPolar Sun 08-Dec-13 14:19:18

x-posted, OLittleTown! Glad to see my two have already made your list grin

Annabelle's Wish is currently £2 in WHSmith!

I like most takes in A Christmas Carol - muppets is brilliant and I also like Scrooged.

Christmas Tree.

No-one has ever heard of it, it was a freebie with the Daily M** years ago and Marie Osmond does the voice and it's bloody marvellous. All the little woodland creatures decorate the lonely little tree in the cold and the broken decoration that the family threw out is there and <sob> it's just wonderful.

The Muppets in second place. Dd watched it last night for the first time, and it showed its age in that there weren't many special effects (well, apart from talking frogs and such) but it was all the better for it. That rat is a bloody genius.

I find Polar Express weird. It's the graphics. It heebs me a bit.

Santa Claus the movie with Dudley Moore followed closely by Rise of the Guardians which has to be the best recent Xmas movie thats been made for years.

Love actually still remains number 1 for me but not for the kids!

MissLivvy Sun 08-Dec-13 15:22:18

It's a wonderful life.

DH loves Its a Wonderful Life but I was a bit hmm

DC loves Home Alone but I cannot see the point of leaving a beautifully decorated house to fly to France for Christmas blush

Love Actually and Polar Express are my watch again and again films

But my Number One Favourite has to be A Christmas Carol - the animated Jim Carey one ( love JC)

I watched Elf after too many Sainsburys Salted Caramel Chocolates.....so I always have the association of envy vom face

This always used to be the first film we'd watch as a family at Christmas time (always was on bbc2 about a week before Christmas) and holds some happy memories for me

I love Polar Express personally!

The Snowman

Santa Claus

Love Actually

Slightly off topic, but years ago (mid nineties) there was an English movie that was aired around Christmas. I loved it, but can not remember what it is called. It's about this alcoholic Mum and her children and her fight against alcoholism. It ends with a happy scene of a cottage with a gorgeous garden full of flowers in the summer. Can not remember much more. If you can help me find it I will love you forever fwink

I'm about to put the Christmas movies on my telly after reading this thread. Am just in the mood. My daughter (who is now 12 and will deny this) loves Polar Express and the Grinch. I'm a fan of It's a Wonderful Life, but dd won't watch it 'cos it's boring and it's about angels, which is rubbish' (she's an atheist). I have a huge soft spot for Jimmy Stewart, so no contest.

There was a dramatization of a book on last Christmas (or was it the Christmas before) called Lost Christmas, which featured Eddie Izzard. That's also a favourite for us, though it's a bit more cynical in parts than the average Christmas fayre but is equally life affirming and totally immersive.

Just watched Polar Express with the kiddies inspired by this thread - it was good but I don't love it.

I also love Love Actually but why, oh why, did they feel the need to add in the naked body doubles simulating sex???? It just means that it will be ages before I let the DC watch it with me, apart from that section, it's magical. (and have you watched the deleted scenes with the Headmistress? So lovely)

oldsilver Sun 08-Dec-13 17:28:23

Without a doubt .... Bad Santa.

It's got everything you could ask for - Father Christmas, cute kid who needs looking after, love story. And of course, a moral at the end fgrin

Is Santa Claus The Movie the one where they have to sing to get the sleigh to rise above Central Park - if so I vote for that one, and that bit fsmile
Polar Express also very good and love the traditional Christmas Carol - great to watch together on Christmas Eve. Elf also amusing and festive.
But I guess it's traditional first past the post voting huh, or it could get complicated fgrin

DancingLady Sun 08-Dec-13 17:32:26

It's a Wonderful Life.

Isn't Meet Me in St Louis Christmassy (at some point? maybe the end?). If so, that's a good one too.

And Elf!

EauRougemasTree Sun 08-Dec-13 17:32:37

I like Bad Santa for those cynical Bah Humbug moments.

Nightmare Before Christmas is brilliant, my DDs aren't quite old enough for it yet.

Elf is ace.

It's a Wonderful Life is a classic.

Cutteduppumpkin Sun 08-Dec-13 17:35:01

Scrooged, without a doubt.

HidingUnderMyDuvet Sun 08-Dec-13 17:35:28

Definitely Love Actually in this house!

MerryMelawen Sun 08-Dec-13 17:35:39

I love Christmas films! There have been some very corny ones on the telly these last few weekends! I love Santa Claus the movie, and also Patrick Stewart's Christmas Carol (I once saw him do a live performance as a one man show - it was just brilliant!).

OLittleTownOfBarflehem Sun 08-Dec-13 17:37:23

No, that's elf. Santa Claus is the one with dudley moore and the lollipops. fgrin I'm trying to add all the faves.

Eau might have bit of a point there, can we change our vote?

JugglingUnwiselyWithBaubles Sun 08-Dec-13 17:38:43

Ooh, just seen the list, also love White Christmas, especially the songs - love a bit of nostalgia. And A Hundred and one dalmatians is quite Christmassy in places, with all that snow? And how could I forget The Snowman - a wonderful classic, but maybe a bit short for best XMas Movie contender?
Anyway, I've voted already fblush

When Zombie was but a wee Zombiette, American TV always showed Peter Pan (the version with Mary Martin as Peter) at Christmas. That's her defining Christmas TV memory.

JugglingUnwiselyWithBaubles Sun 08-Dec-13 17:47:29

Sorry to be trouble - what's new?! - but can I change mine from Elf to A Christmas Carol with Patrick Stewart - they're both part of our Christmas but watching A Christmas Carol on Christmas Eve has become more of a tradition here. And though it's had a mention I don't think it's got a vote yet. Would like to see it on the list thanks

TheHeadlessLadyofCannock Sun 08-Dec-13 17:48:33

Muppet Christmas Carol. <<gavel>>

I like Miracle on 34th St too. But It's a Wonderful Life is sentimental gubbins and Jimmy Stewart is a card-carrying Creepy Weirdo.

It's not a Christmas movie as such but I always watch Little Women (the one with Winona Ryder) while wrapping presents. smile

Also LOVE Arthur Christmas and It's a Wonderful Life, they both make me cry. Also the new Miracle on 34th Street is lovely.

LadyRochford Sun 08-Dec-13 18:34:41

Love actually is our number one. Just the right mix of laughter, tears, story and schmaltz.

Elf number two.

flossieflower Sun 08-Dec-13 18:38:24

Muppet Christmas Carol and Arthur Christmas jointly!

Zamboni Sun 08-Dec-13 18:45:32

Love Actually for me.

Also like Elf and The Holiday.

MARGUERITE18 Sun 08-Dec-13 18:48:58

dd2 thinks the search for santa paws

smile

bigTillyMintspie Sun 08-Dec-13 18:56:06

Love Actually.

And I love the Raymond Briggs version of Father Christmassmile

bigTillyMintspie Sun 08-Dec-13 18:57:35

Zamboni, is The Holiday something about a woman getting stuck somewhere (house!) in the snow?

Another one for A Muppet Christmas Carol. It's wonderful - we always watch it on Christmas Eve and I get all gooey when Kermit sings 'One More Sleep Til Christmas'.

HOWEVER!!!

Has anyone else noticed that the DVD edition (and every version I have seen on TV in recent years) always misses out the song between Scrooge and Belle. It's this one:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=XO_Y5lzSLZI

I used to love that song when I was little. In fact I used to spend the rest of the year acting it out, in the same manner that I used to act out Eleanor Rigby when I was even littler (if anyone is wondering, the correct way to stage these songs is to wander about the landing with a white bed sheet draped about one's shoulders, looking mournful yet at the same time quite stately and aloof).

Why was it cut? There's even a reprise at the end ("The Love is Found") which makes no sense without the full song as a counter!!!!

thinly disguised attempt to hijack the thread in order to gather supporters for a government petition

LeonardoAcropolis Sun 08-Dec-13 19:02:24

White Christmas! Such a lovely film. I also love Love Actually, the Muppets and Beauty and the Beast Belle's Magic Christmas (or something like that ) fblush

Oh, a few years ago, I dont know why, but I always put up the xmas tree whilst watching The Fith Element fconfused

CalamitouslyWrong Sun 08-Dec-13 19:21:02

The search for Santa paws is crap. There is nothing good about it, at all.

PoppyRoseViolet Sun 08-Dec-13 19:36:26

So many to choose from, but A Christmas Carol (with Patrick Stewart and Richard E Grant) a favourite with us! fgrin

SpinCycle Sun 08-Dec-13 19:52:25

Muppet Christmas Carol every time.
Though I also really like Arthur Christmas. Give it a couple of years and I think it will also be a classic.

Ridersofthestorm Sun 08-Dec-13 20:00:35

Just asked my dp what his fav Xmas film is and he said Gremlins, deadly serious too haha.

I love Santa Claus the movie, I loved it so much as a child and still get all warm inside watching it. Oh and It's a wonderful life, I ball my eyes out every time, beautiful film.

Is Santa Claus the Movie the one with Dudley Moore and the rich ginger girl / homeless boy subplot? And John Lithgow? Something about magic lollipops containing reindeer feed...

(No offense meant to gingers, btw, I am one myself!)

I couldn't possibly name my favourite Christmas film as I love them all but I can't believe we've got to page 5 and NOBODY has mentioned The Santa Clause! I love that film!

I also love Miracle on 34th Street, Love Actually and I think that Home Alone 2 is better than the first one.

I've noticed a few other RobinBlahs though. There's a RobinSherbatski and a RobinStinson. They appeared after me so they obviously copied fgrin.

Muppets Christmas Carol - watched every year since I was at university, and now with the family.

We all watched Elf for the first time today, and think that may also become a yearly tradition!

I do love It's a wonderful life - but haven't seen it for a few years now

Can I have 3 votes? (Innocent face)

hugoagogo Sun 08-Dec-13 20:56:56

Muppets Christmas Carol, (it even melts my bah humbug heart)

closely followed by The Santa Clause.

scripsi Sun 08-Dec-13 20:57:39

The Holiday (also great as everyone here wants to watch it) but curious in that I don't think that there is a Christmas Day in it, it skips to NYE.

The Holiday.............

ZeViteVitchofCwismas Sun 08-Dec-13 21:11:12

Gonna have to chime in for santa claus with Dudley more, even with sound off, its so christmassy in the background. ( christmas images).

Tons more films I love....If we could chose more would go for something Dickens....

MrsBramleyApple Sun 08-Dec-13 21:11:52

Abs I love The Family Stone too! Dermot Mulroney is GORGEOUS!!! and they have a deaf character too! smile

Muppets Xmas Carol. We save it til Xmas eve and it just wouldn't be Christmas without it! Al the family love it and if I watch it at all in December before 14th it's just not the same, it has to be saved until then!

Also love Father Christmas, Arthur Christmas, elf, Home Alone, The Snowman and Polar Express and we watch all of them in the run up to the big day. Bloody love Christmas films. Haven't watched so,e of these so off to order them on amazon!

Can't believe nobody's mentioned The Wizard of Oz! My 'must see' Christmas film. Not Christmassy really but my earliest memories are of watching it at Christmas smile Giving my age away there!

Also love Meet Me In St Louis - and particularly the scene where Judy Garland sings 'Have yourself a merry little Christmas'. Christmas with a cherry on top smile

Raahh Sun 08-Dec-13 21:35:52

In order, my favourite Christmas films are-

White Christmas
Miracle on 34th Street (MUST be the original Natalie wood one)
Elf
Polar Express
Arthur Christmas (love this one)

Elf - makes me cry every time, and funny. I love it.

I also like die hard, muppets c c, bad santa, christmas with the kranks and scrooged.

Not that keen on santa clause the movie. I hate it's a wonderful life - really when he has his ears boxed, its awful just makes me depressed. Going to have a look through thread now!

Prep and landing is also on this year quite early (like 6.00 am) its really sweet, a short film with similar scenes to arthur christmas. Probably not christmas movie of the year though.

Father Christmas, tooth fairy, Easter bunny, Jack Frost.

We have to watch National Lampoons christmas vacation and Muppets Christmas Carol every year.

Another vote for Arthur Christmas here! Not a great fan of Christmas movies in general, but loved it when I saw it last year.

magentastardust Sun 08-Dec-13 22:33:36

Ooh I love a xmas film even the awful made for tv American ones that channel 5 shows in the afternoons in December.

My favourite has to be Santa Claus the Movie-just love it -reminds me of watching it as a child and it all being so magical. Peuce Juice!
A few years ago I tried to get my dc's to watch it but they didn't really get into it -think I might try them again this year now that they are a bit older although I guess the effects probably aren't up to that much. Ooh it just makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.

The Dc's like The santa Clause films with Tim Allen-can't believe they haven't featured! Also the muppet xmas Carol and we all enjoy Home Alone. We also really enjoyed Nativity 1 and 2!
Also like Love actually and The holidays for a festive snuggle on the sofa with a Baileys with DH!

HoHoHopasholic Sun 08-Dec-13 22:43:53

ELF! fsmile

Tis the best and one of the few films I've actually belly laughed at. Cracks me up every time when he encounters the escalator fgrin

I'll actually watch any old shit Christmas film though, the more cheese the better. Love 'love actually' too and The Holiday.

LondonMother Sun 08-Dec-13 22:45:27

It's A Wonderful Life - by a country mile! James Stewart is absolutely not a card-carrying creepy weirdo <stares hard at Headless>.

Love Actually is runner up.

Scrooge with Alistair Sim is vg as long as it's not the weird 'colorised' version.

GW297 Sun 08-Dec-13 22:49:03

Elf and Nativity

LondonMother we bought it for my Dad last Christmas. He watched the film in black and white first, then watched the colourised version afterwards without so much as a mulled wine break.

He is single and also watches Downton.

National Lampoon by far!! I have managed to source on Amazon the Reindeer shaped egg nog glasses that they use!! :-)

Great scene -
The Dad is proudly holding up his new Christmas tree outside the house watched by his ghastly sneering neighbours - man and woman:
Horrible neighbour (man): "So where exactly do you think you are going to put that?"
Dad: "Bend over and I'll show you"
Man "How dare you speak to me like that!"
Dad: "I wasn't talking to you ..."

Elf!

It's beaten It's a Wonderful Life in my books. It's sweet and funny and it has so many good lines to quote.
"SANTA! OH MY GOD! SANTA'S COMING! I KNOW HIM! I KNOW HIM!"

OLittleTownOfBarflehem Mon 09-Dec-13 10:31:12

Andi, I love that scene! No-one pulls off childlike joy like Will Ferrell. I love when the fake santa arrives "Don't tell him, he's a fraud!"

We can watch Elf over and over again!

And I like Annabelle's Wish too - very sweet smile

Metebelis3 Mon 09-Dec-13 10:44:37

Die Hard.

shootingstar1234 Mon 09-Dec-13 10:47:29

Definitely The Greatest Store In The World! Also love Elf, Nativity 1&2 and the Home Alone films.

For the family: Elf , the very bright colours and songs are lovely for my DS who has a visual impairment. We will watch it on Christmas Eve

For Me : White Christmas. I get teary every time!

Juniorwebb Mon 09-Dec-13 12:12:33

It's got to be Elf for me.

Though also love

Bad Santa
Die Hard (it's set during Christmas so figure that counts)
Miracle on 34th Street

ElenorRigby Mon 09-Dec-13 12:17:02

It's a Wonderful Lifefsmile

mannbookeriwish Mon 09-Dec-13 12:27:38

Polar Express 'if you just be-lieeeeve'

jamtoast12 Mon 09-Dec-13 13:10:53

Elf. Don't get the polar express at all. Our entire family hated it!

jamtoast12 Mon 09-Dec-13 13:11:16

Though the soundtrack is lovely smile

MrFranklyShankly Mon 09-Dec-13 13:15:17

It has to be elf for me, it's hilarious and sweet without being too much, my dds love that bit Andimac! I find the scene where he is sitting on papa elfs knee funny every time! And where he doesn't know how to use the escalator reminds me of my mum!!!

Kveta Mon 09-Dec-13 13:17:03

Muppet Christmas Carol is one of my favourite films, not just for christmas!
'Light the lamp, not the rat, LIGHT THE LAMP NOT THE RAT!'

also love Love Actually, Elf, and It's a Wonderful Life smile

juneybean Mon 09-Dec-13 13:17:32

Whilst I love Love Actually, my favourite christmas movie has to be Miracle on 34th Street (new)

CallingAllEngels Mon 09-Dec-13 13:26:30

Muppet CC!

Waspie Mon 09-Dec-13 13:39:39

Die Hard is my favourite. followed by Trading Places.

Home Alone is my favourite family Christmas movie though.

chicaguapa Mon 09-Dec-13 13:51:14

It's a Wonderful Life is my favourite.

We have Elf and Miracle of 34th Street for the DC to watch in the car on the way to the DGP for Christmas. They won't watch Muppet Christmas Carol though they'd love it if they did. angry

caramelapple Mon 09-Dec-13 14:34:26

So difficult to choose but Santa Claus the movie has to win it, however embarrassing it is to admit

caramelapple Mon 09-Dec-13 14:36:16

oooh the holiday is a close second

Beastofburden Mon 09-Dec-13 14:53:09

Muppets Christmas carol. The one and only. A fine, humorous, non-sentimental Christmas movie.

FernArable Mon 09-Dec-13 16:15:46

Muppet Christmas Carol. Without a doubt.

Katnisscupcake Mon 09-Dec-13 16:43:35

Got to be Scrooge with Albert Finney. I watched it with my parents as a child (we're all big fans of musicals) and still watch it every year. I don't allow myself to watch it before December.

This year we have FIL here for Xmas Eve so DH, FIL and I will watch 'It's a Wonderful Life' together once DD goes to bed. It'll be FIL's first Xmas without his wife (not DH's Mum - his second wife - they've just split up sad) so I'm not sure the film will help - but he'll be with family at least.

pinotagogo Mon 09-Dec-13 17:13:08

Can't believe The Bishop's Wife hasn't had a mention, (the original with Cary Grant and David Niven and NOT the renamed remake with Whitney Houston). It's Black and white and completely schmaltzy but I love it. To my shame i've never seen Elf and judging by all the fans here I'd better warm up a mince pie, get my finger out and watch it! Oh yeah, and Die Hard is always good for some alternative Action Christmas!

Badgerwife Mon 09-Dec-13 18:13:44

Not strictly a Christmas movie but I watch Little Women every year in December and have a little cry when Beth dies.

Second favourite is Elf

DuckToWater Mon 09-Dec-13 18:39:21

I just came on to say Scrooge with Albert Finney, Katniss.

Other than that I associate Mary Poppins with Christmas as it often used to be shown on Christmas Day.

I just can't sit through Muppet films- neither as a kid, nor an adult. I like the Muppets as characters and some of the humour but I find it all very hit and miss.

DuckToWater Mon 09-Dec-13 18:42:57

I haven't seen most of the films mentioned as I just don't fancy them at all. Another one I loved as a kid was The Christmas Martian.

BuntyPenfold Mon 09-Dec-13 18:43:42

Bernard and the Genie.

Trapper Mon 09-Dec-13 18:48:49

Santa with Muscles with Hulk Hogan!

andagiraffeinapineappletree Mon 09-Dec-13 19:03:46

surviving christmas with ben affleck and james gandolphini is an ok watch not best ever but def ok as far as dysfunctional family ones go.

andagiraffeinapineappletree Mon 09-Dec-13 19:05:47

Another 'i don't get it' for the polar express here too. We have the dvd but its only been watched once.

MyMiddleNameIsLaura Mon 09-Dec-13 19:16:33

Can I ask if Santa Claus the movie is a good one for four year olds? We've got a film afternoon planned with our friends and we're trying to find a Christmas movie that we'll all like.

CorrieDale Mon 09-Dec-13 19:43:55

Oddly thrilled that the muppets are in the lead. And looking forward to the weekend when our scout elf will be giving the dc a copy of elf, because we haven't seen it yet and it seems pretty popular.

Beastofburden Mon 09-Dec-13 20:03:09

Love love the muppets, so glad it is leading.

Have avoided elf so far as am not keen on cute/zany films but perhaps I have misjudged it and should give it a go.

Beastofburden Mon 09-Dec-13 20:03:57

Laura the four year old would probably love the muppets and it is good for adults too...

Elf is still in the lead, but it's v close. Beast, definitely give it a go. I didn't fancy it at all, but it's funny and brilliant.

MyMiddleName, I LOVE SCTM, it's my favourite, but that is probably because I associate it with one of my happiest childhood memories. It's schmaltzy and very 80's, but just makes me smile.

Otherwise, my tip is Elf.

OLittleTownOfBarflehem Mon 09-Dec-13 20:31:10

Thegreylady, was it? I didn't know that. You'll have to tell me some tomorrow <eek>

misslongstocking Mon 09-Dec-13 20:41:47

I love Home Alone too - it's one of the few films my children (boy/girls) and husband & I enjoy watching together and never tire of!
It is just so funny ,with a genuinely moving sub plot which always brings a tear to my eye

Elizadoesdolittle Mon 09-Dec-13 21:22:34

beast I thought I'd hate Elf. I can't stand Will Farrel normally but it really is good. It's funny and heart warming and not too schmultzy.

whatsagoodusername Mon 09-Dec-13 21:51:26

Santa With Muscles - An evil millionaire (Hulk Hogan) gets amnesia and then belives that he is Santa Claus. What is not to love about this?

We did find a gem the other day on Netflix - Holiday In Handcuffs, with Melissa Joan Hart. It was fabulous.

Beastofburden Mon 09-Dec-13 21:54:30

I will give elf a go. Thanks!

VanillaMiceCream Mon 09-Dec-13 21:59:01

Christmas Story
Home Alone (all)
National Lampoon Christmas Vacation
Charlie Brown Christmas
Elf

The Dead (set at Epiphany) is for me a very moving Christmas movie. Kind of the tail end of Christmas.

SparklyMonkeyMummy Tue 10-Dec-13 06:17:05

Elf is definetly number one!

The Grinch
Father Christmas
The Hogfather
Bad Santa
Scrooge (1970s version)

TeaforRoo Tue 10-Dec-13 07:25:55

For me it's Love Actually as I saw it twice on it's release very heavily pregnant with DD. I cried through out and still cry especially at the opening sequence in the airport.

To watch with the family it's Miracle on 34th Street the newer version. Gets me and the afore mentioned DD every time. I believe!!!

ProfessorDent Tue 10-Dec-13 12:53:53

I never got the hang of It's a Wonderful Life, I mean he spends most of his time being thwarted and having a rotten time. Finally an angel shows him how it could have been worse - but most losers will figure, well, that wouldn't be the case with me, I haven't changed anything for the better. So what gives.

Being a bloke I will offer On Her Majesty's Secret Service, but I wish Conney had done it.

Other films like Wizard of Oz and Casablanca have a Christmassy feel though are not very seasonal admittedly.

Madmammy83 Tue 10-Dec-13 13:16:08

Elf
Bad Santa
Christmas With the Kranks
Love Actually
The Santa Clause

I HATE It's a Wonderful Life.

shirleycat1 Tue 10-Dec-13 13:50:12

Bad Santa is fucking ace!

eggsandwich Tue 10-Dec-13 14:44:52

The Bishops Wife with Cary Grant as the angel
preps landing
polar express
Its a wonderful life
The man who came to dinner starring Bette Davis
White Christmas

iseenodust Tue 10-Dec-13 14:58:00

Rudolph and the island of misfit toys - came free with a newspaper but we watch it many, many times each Dec. so it's about lovely times with DS rather than one from my childhood.

maishoffwcingras Tue 10-Dec-13 17:33:28

Elf definitely. I try to only watch it at Christmas as a special treat but I quite often give in.

Ilovetoread Tue 10-Dec-13 17:47:32

Got to be:
Nativity #1
Nativity #2
A Christmas Carol (2009 Jim Carrey version)

Just love them, watch them every year, though Nativity 2 a new addition to the viewing! fgrin

DisappointedHorse Tue 10-Dec-13 20:31:07

It's a Wonderful Life - I have to watch it every Christmas Eve. We usually watch Polar Express with the kids earlier.

I also love Bad Santa.

I've never seen Elf, I take it it's worth a watch then!

Meglet Tue 10-Dec-13 20:53:25

Muppets CC.

Closely followed by The Snowman and Home Alone. My DSIS bought me Elf for Xmas when DS was born (7yrs ago) and I still haven't had chance to watch it.

WeAllHaveWings Tue 10-Dec-13 21:17:27

Definitely Home Alone - first film that had ds (must have been around 4) doubled over, couldn't talk, pointing at the screen and crying with laughter.

Watched every year since and still love it.

TallulahBetty Tue 10-Dec-13 21:29:53

I love the Polar Express, but my all-time fave must be Home Alone.

Special mention also to Home Alone 2.

soundevenfruity Tue 10-Dec-13 22:05:34

1. Love Actually
2. Home alone

AskAQuestion Tue 10-Dec-13 23:34:07

1. Home alone
2. Love Actually
3. Santa Claus, The Movie
2. Sleepless in Seattle

I do like Christmas With the Kranks too

WhentheRed Wed 11-Dec-13 07:19:09

Loads of Christmas films in our house: Love Actually (for the adults), Arthur Christmas, Elf, White Christmas, Miracle on 34th Street, Christmas Story and the one with Harry Dean Stanton as Gabriel the angel (can't remember the name).

itsonlysubterfuge Wed 11-Dec-13 09:24:08

I'm not sure what my favourite one is, but I really love The Year Without A Santa Claus, the old one. I'm guessing it's not very popular over here, but it's very popular in America. I get the miser brothers song stuck in my head for ages.

I just love all those Christmas TV movies from the 1940's though. Timeless classics.

Vagndidit Wed 11-Dec-13 10:01:02

Are people in this country not familiar with A Christmas Story???

Best.movie.ever! Loves me sum Ralphie!!!

OLittleTownOfBarflehem Sat 14-Dec-13 23:05:54

DS and I watched Miracle on 34th Street today, and it made me cry. Especially the bit with the judge and the dollar bill...

AnneWentworth Sun 15-Dec-13 10:41:09

Elf - I love the idea of Christmas Spirit.

But Miracle on 34th Street is just beautiful and Santa Claus will always make me smile.

I have to remember to buy the radio/tv times - I have fond memories of circling all the films to watch. Even thought he TV can show me when everything is on the DC and I still do this.

Davros Sun 15-Dec-13 13:18:14

Those who like White Christmas, have you seen Holiday Inn? It's much better and is the one in which White Christmas was first sung. Thanks for the reminder about The Man Who Cane To Dinner, that is excellent and I've got the DVD so will dig it out.
As well as lots of the above, also
Bridget Jones Diary
When Harry met Sally
Everyone says I love you (Woody Allen)
