I just happened to see this today and something deep stirred within me, I am sure I had one, and I loved its smell and its feet and I was fascinated with the combo of soft toy but also doll....

TheYamiOfYawn Sun 10-Nov-13 20:56:29

I was born in the 70s and had one. She could suck her thumb.

MarysDressSways Sun 10-Nov-13 20:56:59

Yes those were deffo around when I was a kid in the 80's

RandomMess Sun 10-Nov-13 20:57:50

Yep I remember something like that too.

MrsMot Sun 10-Nov-13 20:58:00

Yup, UK 70s/80s, still mahoosive in Japan.

Ooh I didn't have one but I remember something similar

(But it reminds me of the creepy little bear from "Bo-Selecta" so I wouldn't ) grin

ElfontheShelfIsWATCHINGYOUTOO Sun 10-Nov-13 20:58:09

Oh good!!!

I saw it and just thought I had to have it. And had no idea why!!!!

Longdistance Sun 10-Nov-13 20:58:25

Omfg! I had one of these shock

I'm gonna order one now for me dd2.

I was born in 1980. I still have mine. It does suck its thumb and mine is/was called Cheekaboo. It's white but v similar.

I'm sure I had one, remember chewing on it's feet.

holycowwhatnow Sun 10-Nov-13 20:59:15

I remember those. I was born in 1970 and considered myself too old for them whenever they came out but I secretly wanted one!

devonsmummy Sun 10-Nov-13 20:59:30

I had one of these it was called Chicaboo

ElfontheShelfIsWATCHINGYOUTOO Sun 10-Nov-13 20:59:51

long

One on Amazon has a little bear attached too.

I feel I have to order one too but its quite pricey and we have got everything for xmas really but I really want one

First released 1974 according to wiki, then there was a TV series in the 80's.

ElfontheShelfIsWATCHINGYOUTOO Sun 10-Nov-13 21:00:24

murder I chewed on mine too blush

Longdistance Sun 10-Nov-13 21:01:14

Actually, when I was in Hong Kong on Kowloon Island, there was a shop full of these Monchichi's. They were all dressed up in different outfits, it was near Halloween time and they had a few dressed as pumpkins, witches etc.

Google tells me it was a chickaboo!

Longdistance Sun 10-Nov-13 21:02:25

<faints> My grandmother in Hungary got us these when we were kids.

nicky2512 Sun 10-Nov-13 21:03:23

Wow, I still have mine!!! Upstairs in DDs bedroom (somewhere). I loved it. Santa left me one in the late 70's (doesn't that sound so long ago?) Might get myself a new one.

Longdistance Sun 10-Nov-13 21:04:09

I think in the Uk they were called Cheekaboo (sp?), but in Hungary they were Monchichi's like in the Debenhams description.

Goatmint Sun 10-Nov-13 21:06:56

Chickaboo! I had one of those, and had toys for him and all sorts.

ElfontheShelfIsWATCHINGYOUTOO Sun 10-Nov-13 21:08:11

How strange, I almost want to cry.

I don't remember mine directly.

I was never a soft toy person, and it was that combo that got me.

MacaYoniandCheese Sun 10-Nov-13 21:09:32

Aaaaagh! It's a Monchichi! I wanted one soooooooo badly but my Mum would not cave because she thought they were 'tacky' (ditto Poochie dogs, plastic dress-up shoes and those mannequin heads that you could makeover). Must admit now; she did have a point.

MacaYoniandCheese Sun 10-Nov-13 21:12:26

Not sure how I remember them though because, due to being only 29, they were well before my time was born in 1976.

WaitMonkeysDoppelganger Sun 10-Nov-13 21:12:38

They were Chickaboos weren't they? I have a boy and a girl (with a pink bow) somewhere in a box

YonilyDevotedToYou Sun 10-Nov-13 21:14:13

I had a boy one called Kiki!

eurochick Sun 10-Nov-13 21:16:27

I'm a 70s child and it doesn't look familiar.

Elsiequadrille Sun 10-Nov-13 21:17:01

I remember those. I had one, Chicaboo it was called.

I'm tempted to buy one as a Christmas gift for somebody now. Not sure who yet!

17leftfeet Sun 10-Nov-13 21:18:48

ooo I had one of those

I used to suck it's thumb!

blush

Rosvita Sun 10-Nov-13 21:19:05

I was born in 80's and remember those.never had one though.hank god it's out of stock or I'd probably have found myself buying one for dd and I've already bought her more than enough for birthday/xmas

Elsiequadrille Sun 10-Nov-13 21:22:22

They have lots of them on Amazon!

Haribotangfastic Sun 10-Nov-13 21:35:39

onepieceoflollipop Sun 10-Nov-13 21:50:51

magentastardust Sun 10-Nov-13 21:52:10

Shellywelly1973 Sun 10-Nov-13 22:02:44

Elsiequadrille Sun 10-Nov-13 23:57:24

It's definitely Chicaboo, treacle soda.

Onesleeptillwembley Mon 11-Nov-13 00:33:27

Definitely chicaboo. We had chicaboo-gate when one cousin was sick on another's.

Longdistance Mon 11-Nov-13 07:14:34

It was a chickaboo in the Uk, but Monchichi's everywhere else. They were Monchichi's in the Hong Kong shop (well, Kowloon to precise).

ophiotaurus Mon 11-Nov-13 08:10:51

I may have ordered ds2 (3) me a red boy one!

ElfontheShelfIsWATCHINGYOUTOO Mon 11-Nov-13 09:51:35

We had chicaboo-gate when one cousin was sick on another's grin

ophiotaurus

grin Getting one too. So silly but cannot resist.

Kenworthington Mon 11-Nov-13 09:58:15

Ooooh a chickaboo! I am ridiculously excited about this. Yep I had one too. I have a glorious 80s technicolor photo of me cradling one and I have stupidly high bunches and a bad fringe and a lovely lemon sweatshirt on <nostalgic>

TurboTheChicken Mon 11-Nov-13 10:04:19

My sister and I had Chicaboos, she had the large girl and I had the small boy. We also had the Chicaboo cot and rocking horse.

Mmmm, I might get off to Amazon, they are nasty but DD would love one.

ElfontheShelfIsWATCHINGYOUTOO Mon 11-Nov-13 11:46:46

Noooo they are not nasty!

They are cute!

ElfontheShelfIsWATCHINGYOUTOO Mon 11-Nov-13 11:47:24

Deebenhams are out of stock on line but have a discount in store tomorow. also the actual website is well priced

Chickaboo here. Except mine were a lot smaller and had arms that stuck straight out and you clipped them to things. I had loads, really loved them.

Am off to google smile

miffybun73 Mon 11-Nov-13 11:58:32

I had one, they were called Chic a Boo. I remember the tiny bib and the fact that they could suck their thumb smile

spiderlight Mon 11-Nov-13 12:04:49

I had one! They were called Chicaboo.

Beccawoo Mon 11-Nov-13 12:06:35

I had one of those in the early 80s. They also made a mini resurgence in the early 90s I think. X

spiderlight Mon 11-Nov-13 12:06:56

These were the clip-on ones.

Beccawoo Mon 11-Nov-13 12:07:35

I am now feeling the urge to buy my 2 year old daughter one for Christmas!

ElfontheShelfIsWATCHINGYOUTOO Mon 11-Nov-13 12:09:24

spider

Oh my goodness, again, wow, wow, what a memory, I remember that one more than the other one I had.

ElfontheShelfIsWATCHINGYOUTOO Mon 11-Nov-13 12:10:16

The only thing is the 20cm one seems quite small.

spiderlight Mon 11-Nov-13 12:11:00

I had a brown mnonkey one with a long tail. I want him now but I bet my mum threw him out sad

WowserBowser Mon 11-Nov-13 12:13:09

I have one! Well had one.

Last week i received a series of photos from DB of Chick a boo boo (as i know him) in the bin, on a log burner, having his damaged foot pulled sad

My DNeice has now rescued him. She loves him and the last photo was of him wrapped up in a blanket in a moses basket.

Jacksterbear Mon 11-Nov-13 12:14:07

I had the clip-on ones, and the thumb-sucking one - which ironically my mum bought me as a bribe/reward for stopping sucking my thumb. Ahhhhh happy memories.

ElfontheShelfIsWATCHINGYOUTOO Mon 11-Nov-13 12:14:25

Wowser

Wiping something from my eye. smile

TwoTearsInABucket Mon 11-Nov-13 12:16:27

They have them in Smyths Toystore. Just sayin'.

pinkmagic1 Mon 11-Nov-13 12:19:46

I had a clip on one, born late 70's

Fenton Mon 11-Nov-13 12:33:15

I saw this thread this morning and have now dug out my Suck-a-Thumb Bear, - a picture of him is now in my Photos on my profile.

He is one of a tiny handful of belongings I have from my childhood, my brother bought him for me one Christmas, in the late 70's I think (?)

ElfontheShelfIsWATCHINGYOUTOO Mon 11-Nov-13 12:56:33

Fenton AWwwwwwwwww.

Elsiequadrille Mon 11-Nov-13 13:00:29

Oh yes, Miffyboo. It was Chic a Boo rather than Chicaboo.

TurboTheChicken Mon 11-Nov-13 14:17:17

I've just ordered one for DD for Christmas.

And two outfits.

I blame you OP!

Yes! I had one! So nostalgic now.
And Poochie Dog- I really wanted one but never got one or a My Little Pony. I have a vague recollection of a type of tiny baby doll that came in a matchbook type box too.

TooWetToWoo Mon 11-Nov-13 14:34:25

Oh I had one of those! Called it Chicky Boo Boo, feeling all nostalgic now!

MacaYoniandCheese Mon 11-Nov-13 16:59:51

Ooh! I remember those matchbox babies!

GobblersAnyKnobFucker Mon 11-Nov-13 17:01:39

I still have mine and my brothers.

CPtart Mon 11-Nov-13 17:07:59

Chicka chicks chickaboo.
Furry and cuddly they love you.
I had one that clipped onto my pencils

MacaYoni so glad someone else remembers them and that they weren't a crazy childhood dream grin

CredulousThicko Mon 11-Nov-13 17:09:10

I'm a 1970's baby and i've still got mine smile

could never remember what they were called though.

SarahPercyAndBill Mon 11-Nov-13 17:14:15

OMG, Monchichi! I started humming the song

ProfYaffle Mon 11-Nov-13 17:14:33

Oh God, they FREAKED me right out as a child. Plastic faces and fur, just wrong, wrong, wrong diddly wrong wrong. <shudder>

NothingMoreScaryThanAHairy Mon 11-Nov-13 17:18:56

I had one.

3 of them were waiting in the back of our car before a holiday journey. Dsis's and I spent the next 15 mins arguing over who had the one with the bow! grin DM then sewed two bows to the remaining 2 for a quiet life...

Mine had a thumb like a dummy that stuck in it's mouth. I may even still have it in the loft!

HoobleDooble Mon 11-Nov-13 17:26:00

I'm a 70s kid and still have mine too! A boy and a girl with a couple of outfits and furniture (a rocking horse and a rocking chair if I remember correctly), I think they're in DS's bedroom somewhere.

spicynaknik Mon 11-Nov-13 17:32:53

I'm a child of the 70s and I still have had one of these and it was my bestest favourite thing that I still had as my teddy until I was 25 16 or so. It went totally bald, its bow and tuft of hair fell off and the dog chewed its foot, but it was my precious.

I have also got myself the DC some cute Japanese ones, dressed in raccoon suits and rabbits suits.

ElfontheShelfIsWATCHINGYOUTOO Mon 11-Nov-13 20:01:00

spicey

I am sure I remember baldness too.
I am going to get mine tomorrow, I hope I am not disappointed by its side. not that it matters to me, its for dd

<wonders if we are going to start to see women walking round with a Chicco peaking out their bags>

EnlightenedOwl Mon 11-Nov-13 20:56:04

i had one. Had being the operative word. I accidentally dropped it down the well at Conwy Castle. Probably still there floating in the depths.

TwoStepsBeyond Mon 11-Nov-13 20:57:50

I had a few of these, including a giant 2 ft tall one. I call Dd chickaboo as a NN!

TawdryTatou Tue 12-Nov-13 12:58:19

Cheeka, cheeka, cheekaboo,
Furry and cuddly, we love you.

Got the ad jingle stuck in my head now...

ZenOfPetals Tue 12-Nov-13 13:57:54

I was a child in the 70s, loved my Monchichi AND still have it! It is in a box in the attic cause its head fell off and all these little beads came out. I loved it too much!

ZenOfPetals Tue 12-Nov-13 16:04:40

Monchichi, monchichi
Oh, so soft and cuddly!

ElfontheShelfIsWATCHINGYOUTOO Tue 12-Nov-13 16:23:57

Picked mine up today. grin

It feels better somehow to have one back in the house. confused

PatoBanton Tue 12-Nov-13 16:40:52

Have got a mini white clip on one, which was in a dressing table in my old bedroom at my granny's house...she kept it all as it was till she died.

Found it together with various sets of knickers and hankies, and some pens and some Wombles talc sad

TheArticFunky Tue 12-Nov-13 17:30:02

Yes they were all the rage when I was about 8 or 9 (born 1972 ). I got one on EBay a few years back.

SarahPercyAndBill Tue 12-Nov-13 18:34:02

Aw spicy, it was your velveteen rabbit and you loved it real. smile

ElfontheShelfIsWATCHINGYOUTOO Tue 12-Nov-13 18:38:32

Elsiequadrille Wed 13-Nov-13 21:15:42

I still have Huggy Bear, nicename! Odd thing it is.
