An iPod touch
A cheap tablet around £90 mark.

Haven't yet - DC are 9 and 7

altinkum Sun 25-Nov-12 01:35:31

Age 6.

Ds is getting his own tablet this year, as he is getting loads of online homework.

NatashaBee Sun 25-Nov-12 01:38:59

DSD got one at 9, think she was the first of her friends to have one.

nappyaddict Sun 25-Nov-12 01:41:11

I know DS would love one but I've always felt that these are secondary age presents or at least double figures. I wondered if I was just being behind with the times.

I have been looking at ones aimed at children like the Kurio 7 and Arnova Child Pad.

Any age. Ds has had an old I phone as an I pod touch since he was 2.

Our two (well three but dd2 will only be 18 months!) are getting an iPad between them although we're saying it's a family present.

vodkaanddietirnbru Sun 25-Nov-12 08:32:04

dd and ds are getting a tablet for christmas (age 9 and 6). DD has an ipod nano that she got last year.

TellMeLater Sun 25-Nov-12 09:05:22

At age eight we got them a tablet. They only use it for travelling, it has a kindle app so we download books for holidays but they are very pricy and hard to justify the cost, when we can get them from the library for free and ds reads a chunky book in 48 hrs.
They spend more of their screen time on the computer which has flash player - none of the tablets have this - not even my iPad, so they can't even do their homework on their tablets. They just haven't been as useful as we'd hoped.

whatkungfuthat Sun 25-Nov-12 09:08:39

DS1 (14) is getting an ipod touch this year. We would have considered it for a few years but he always wanted something else more. DS2 is 6 and could probably handle a tablet as he is ok on my laptop, I am considering a kindle for myself that he can use too.

whatkungfuthat Sun 25-Nov-12 09:09:21

Gah, too many 'considers', I sound like an arse!

Oodthunkit Sun 25-Nov-12 09:10:40

Dd1 is getting an iPod touch from xh this year at 12

LadyIsabellaWrotham Sun 25-Nov-12 09:16:25

Haven't felt the need yet - they're 8 and 10

FrankincenseWippery Sun 25-Nov-12 09:23:49

DD3 has had an old iPhone since she was 18m and kept nicking mine. She has an Innotab 2 but spends more time on my sodding iPad, she's now 3.9. It's amazing how fast the irksome urchins get to grips with these bloody things!

My other three children are too old for that to have been an issue. Think they got their first iPods when they were 12, 11 and 9, in 2004/5. They got laptops when they each turned 14.

chocolatespiders Sun 25-Nov-12 09:29:41

My 9.5 dd is having a tablet this year, she has an older sister (15) which I think has made her more savy with these things as dd1 would not have had one at 9!!

DD2 keeps pinching dd1 Ipad and the rows are unbearable. DD2 is having a Samsung Galaxy tab 7" which is £150 with £30 cash back from Samsung (if I remember to send off for it)

Got an iPod touch last year, at almost 8. Getting a tablet as a family present this year.

lljkk Sun 25-Nov-12 09:37:16

they are generally beyond my budget. However...

I was going to get DS a 2nd hand iPod for his 13th birthday, but in the end he saved up enough money from other sources for us to stretch to helping him buy an iPad. He never gets off the sodding thing.

DD is in y6, has about £70 of birthday money left. I could suggest that i get her an iPod for Xmas combined with some of her own cash, am toying with the idea. It would be a toy, first and foremost. But she could facetime her friends on it.

Thumbwitch Sun 25-Nov-12 09:42:43

DH got a Sony tablet earlier this year and DS (4) has been learning to use it. I wouldn't get him his own yet though.

SweetMingePie Sun 25-Nov-12 09:46:50

Was considering getting my ds1 one this year, he is 9. Would not get any younger though as they'd not look after it.

I would however consider the meep or kurio for my 7 year old, bt only because they are designed for children and come preloaded with no Internet access.

phoebechicken Sun 25-Nov-12 09:47:04

Not yet (8 and almost 6 year olds). I did consider the Kindle Fire for DD1, but I just think she's a bit too young. I'd consider it at 9 or 10 if she really wanted one, I think. I have an ipad that we all use already and that's fine for now.

ISeeThreadPeople Sun 25-Nov-12 09:50:48

No idea really what either thing is. blush DD is only 5 and a half though so maybe I've got all this to come.

WeAllHaveWings Sun 25-Nov-12 13:33:04

ds(nearly 9) is getting iPod this Xmas.

RedZombie Sun 25-Nov-12 13:35:19

IPOD Touch for 9th birthday. Although I'm starting to think that a 7inch tablet might have been better.
Ipad - can't afford one

nappyaddict Mon 26-Nov-12 10:11:01

SMP The Kurio 7, Meep and Arnova Child Pad all have internet access with parental controls don't they?

iseenodust Mon 26-Nov-12 10:16:27

Not yet for DS 8.

Noobo Mon 26-Nov-12 10:19:16

DD's are both teenagers now but had basic ipods when the nano first came out, so around 8-10 years old. Both have blackberrys and got ipod touchs in early teens. They don't seem that interested in tablets but both got laptops on starting secondary school which they use for media, watching films, tv (when they should be asleep or doing homework...)

A colleague told me the Ipad is great for stopping her kids fighting on long car journeys and if it had been around then I may well have bought one!

bondigidum Mon 26-Nov-12 11:19:34

12.

voddiekeepsmesane Mon 26-Nov-12 11:26:49

DS 8 is getting a tablet this year

Startail Mon 26-Nov-12 11:39:32

ipod Touch 9 and 12
only Tablet is my fire, I've only had it a week. They can keep off.

However they have always helped themselves to my desktop computer.

DD2 could drive that from 3 and ended up with her own laptop at 7.
DD1 had in when she was 11 ish, So neither needs a tabet.

Neither do I this was a totally unexpected gift.

Startail Mon 26-Nov-12 11:40:40

DD1 had one, sadly there isn't an app to fix dyslexic typing.

notso Mon 26-Nov-12 11:45:46

DD got an Ipod touch aged 10 however DH and I both wish we had waited until she was older. She is almost 13 and saving for an Ipad, but I know it will cause issues when we want to restrict her usage.
DD would love a laptop, she tries to persuade us with saying it will be used for homework but she manages fine with the family PC.
I hate the idea of her going online in her room all the time, and it seems mean to get her one then say you can only use it downstairs.

All her friends (bar one) have Ipads, and most have had laptops from about 8 or 9, but then they are all on Facebook at midnight too.

sendo Mon 26-Nov-12 11:59:44

Not yet - DS (9). He has limited access to my IPAD, DH's Ipod Touch, Kindle & Iphone & more access to the PC. I reckon in another year or two for senior school, we might as well go straight onto his own PC since he does increasing amounts of HW on it. IMO, tablets are for gaming, reading and surfing and less suitable for work and we have enough gaming consoles/gadgets in the house. In addition to the above, we have the PSP 3, DS x 2 and a high spec PC (nerdy DH!).

silverfrog Mon 26-Nov-12 12:06:09

dd1 is 8 and has had an ipad for a couple of years now. it's not so much a 'toy' for her though, rather a necessity.

dd2 has fairly open access to my ipod touch and has had since she was 3 or so.

forevergreek Mon 26-Nov-12 12:41:03

I think a tablet is a bit too young, but a regular kindle is great for reading. The paper light would be fab for travelling if overnight in particular

Everythingwillbeok Mon 26-Nov-12 12:43:52

My DD has an I pod she is 7. We have a family i pad so she doesn't have her own tablet

LoopsInHoops Mon 26-Nov-12 12:50:26

How can an ipad for a 6 year old be a necessity? confused

DewDr0p Mon 26-Nov-12 12:52:58

Ds1 is 8 and has asked for an ipod touch for Christmas. We are thinking we will get it for him but I need to work out how to control his internet access.

That's his first bit of technology - no ds's or tablets or laptops here yet.

skateboarder Mon 26-Nov-12 12:57:57

Lots of dd's friends have ipods etc at 7 and 8 years old. Many had Nintendo ds's at 2 and 3 though.
We are considering a tablet when she is 9.

silverfrog Mon 26-Nov-12 13:08:05

Loops - dd1 has severe ASD, and uses her ipad at school. she has learnt to read and write through using it, as well as telling the time, music and so much more.

we also use it as an extra to her home/school communication book as we load up photos and videos for her to show at school, which helps fill in the gaps in what she can tell school about what she has done at home.

LoopsInHoops Mon 26-Nov-12 13:14:13

Ah, excellent use of it then!

MrsDimples Mon 26-Nov-12 13:19:38

DD was two when we got her, her iPod touch, she also has access to the family iPad.

penguinplease Mon 26-Nov-12 13:20:01

mine are getting ipod touch for Xmas they are 8 and 7.. I have resisted as long as I could but they just want them for the music as much as anything else.

silverfrog Mon 26-Nov-12 13:21:55

it has been invaluable, tbh. there are too many uses to be able to list them.

a (slightly) unfortunate side effect is that dd2 (and later, ds - he is only 16 weeks atm!) has felt a 'need' for an ipad/ipod touch much earlier than we woudl otherwise have introduced ehr to one. but even so, the gains dd1 has made far outweigh the (potential, and i don't really think this anyway) drawbacks of dd2 having (to all intents and purposes - it is mine, but she has free use of it) an ipod touch at age 5.
