LAST CHANCE! Closes today! MN Christmas appeal 2012 - Nominations and Donations thread

RebeccaMumsnet (MNHQ) Mon 08-Oct-12 17:18:01

We've all seen the mini chocolate snowmen in the shops and the cries for all Christmas-based threads to be moved out of AIBU to the Christmas topic grin - so that can only mean one thing! It's time for the MN Christmas Appeal.
Little bit of history for those who are new to the whole idea: in the past, Mumsnetters offered to donate gifts to other Mumsnetters in need over Christmas. And you also nominated Mumsnetters to receive these gifts. Each year, a particularly saintly Mumsnetter volunteered to match up the donors with the nominees and organise a mass posting of presents.

Two years ago, we felt the Appeal had grown so large that it was too much for one person to co-ordinate - so we moved it onto the MNHQ to-do list and this will be our third year.

Here's how it works.
You have until Monday 22 October to nominate a fellow MNetter who you think has gone over and above, offered you some lovely advice, might need a little help or someone who is generally an all round luffly person.

You can nominate here

You also have until Monday 22 October to pledge your donation for a fellow MNetter. Vouchers are easier to match but we have had all sorts in the past from Christmas trees to hampers and re-gifted items. Nothing is too small.

You can donate here

We then contact all of those nominated by the 29th October and ask them for their address and age/sex of their DC, this information will need to be back to us by Friday 9 November

Nominees and donors will then be matched and we will send those who donated, their matched nominees address by Friday 23 November so that gifts can be sent well before the final Christmas post. Parcels are addressed to the MNetter of the House (unless otherwise stated) to try to maintain anonymity.

This whole process is anonymous, we do not pass over RL or Talk names.

If you would like to get a gift for someone specific then it is better to arrange it with them directly. As much as we would love to facilitate all of your Christmas wishes, we simply don't have the brain power capacity <flutters spreadsheets>

Donors and nominees are given a number to quote to say thank you to one another following the gifts being sent out.

Any questions about the frankly terribly confusing process, please do ask.

May we be the first to wish you a very Merry Christmas grin

BrainSurgeon Mon 08-Oct-12 17:24:50

Cheers Rebecca I was looking for this information as I had heard about the MN Christmas gifts but didn't know how it worked thanks

Silly question - one can volunteer to just donate, we don't HAVE to nominate someone do we? (would struggle too much to choose)

Ta

TallulahTwinkle Mon 08-Oct-12 17:25:48

Ooh, I've nominated a lovely Mumsnetter wink

RebeccaMumsnet (MNHQ) Mon 08-Oct-12 17:26:01

You can just do one or the other, that is fine. No pressure either way.

SheelaNeGig Mon 08-Oct-12 17:33:53

I'm liking your easy linkies.

NormaStanleyFletcher Mon 08-Oct-12 17:37:07

YAAAAAYYY

Have donated.

SO SO pleased that you have it in properly submitable forms now. Makes the spreadsheet so much easier grin

blondieminx Mon 08-Oct-12 17:46:38

Done <<warm festive glow>>

BigBroomstickBIWI Mon 08-Oct-12 17:57:17

<feels cockles warming already>

This is my favourite part of Christmas, makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside smile

I was a rather gobsmacked recipient last year, and the gifts my children and I received were lovely and really touched us. So pleased to be able to contribute this year. smile

Haribojoe Mon 08-Oct-12 18:34:57

So glad this is being done again this year. Loved donating last year and the whole thing just makes me well up when I think of how generous people are and the difference it makes to people. grin

Nice one, Rebecca.

Gin to y'all.

VoldemortsNipple Mon 08-Oct-12 18:58:53

Oh my lord, Im just thinking about the look on postmen's faces up and down the country delivering parcels to various mnetters. Imagine if you missed it and had to pick it up from the sorting office grin

It makes me want to nominate AnyFucker just for the fun of it grin

(serious face) I'll have a think about what I can donate and come back smile

Voldemorts I did have to get ours from the sorting office! The bloke behind the counter looked at me like hmm and nearly refused to give it to me because I didn't have any ID in the name 'The Mumsnetter'... confused

VoldemortsNipple Mon 08-Oct-12 19:22:39

Haha. I can imagine the shame. Do you think if I took all my Harry books, audio discs DVDs and replica wands they would accept that as ID grin

SheelaNeGig Mon 08-Oct-12 19:30:33

Vipers <<sniff>> mean and narsty vipers <<wipes little tear>>

Could you confirm please, RebeccaMumsnet, is there a macimum number of posters we can nominate?

There's a right load of good souls on here and I'd find it so hard to whittle down.

And what would happen if a poster got nominated 173 times? That would be one pizzed orf Postbox Operative. smile

Any guidance would be great.

<<does not envy Rebecca Mumsnet next few months>>

NormaStanleyFletcher Mon 08-Oct-12 19:44:34

Chaos - I don't think that being nominated 173 times leads to 173 presents - At least it didn't in my fuck up day.

Absolutely LOVE this and it is one of the best bits of my Christmas. thanks

have nominated...Love the forms!!

In short, you can nominate as many peeps as you like. However, we would like you to think long and hard about who and why as there are a limited number of donations and we don't want to be in a position where we have more nominees than we do donations.

I will stress that this hasn't happened before, we normally have lots more donations than nominations.

10 nominations does not equal 10 gifts necessarily, we make sure that all nominated folks get something and then we take a look at reasons for nominations, number of children, number of nominations etc etc and allocate the remaining gifts.

Some people may get one small gift, others may get 10 small gifts or one large gift - it's all vair complicated. confused

InfestationofLannisters Mon 08-Oct-12 20:32:44

Hooray! Have bought DS a toy he already owns for Christmas blush but it would be perfect for someone else - thanks HQ.

WineGless Mon 08-Oct-12 20:33:06

Norma, you did a fab job. Don't beat yoursel' up!

Have signed up- I LOVE this part of Christmas.

Oi Chaos, thought you were being bah humbug wink

NormaStanleyFletcher Mon 08-Oct-12 20:36:14

Aww thanks WineGlass. I still have flashbacks to the nervous breakdown, oh, and DH carrying a laptop with a mobile dongle up a snowy scottish hill, and holding it up in the air, to try to get emails sent.

<<passes vair good quality naice gin to Rebecca>>

everydayaschoolday Mon 08-Oct-12 21:03:00

Rebecca/previous participants if donating toys, should they be wrapped and gift labelled with child's age, or would parents prefer to vet the gifts first and gift wrap themselves for the children? I'm a happy OCD wrapper, but understand if this is not the done thing smile.

BabylonPI Mon 08-Oct-12 21:19:34

Fabulous idea, I've signed up to donate - have some fab little stocking fillers for DCs!!

Warms me cockles just thinking about little faces lighting up on Christmas Day smile

Ooh, Norma.

Your stuint was before my time, but I have heard you've got mahoosive accolades.

grin

Tres bon.

Sorry RebeccaMumsnet, I thank you for your explanation, you are considerably more clearer than her wot did it last year.

Saltire Mon 08-Oct-12 21:46:36

Do the usual rules about having been on Mn for a certain period of time still apply?

I've donated. I was tempted just send lots of gin to MNHQ but decided not to suck up grin This giving is a wonderful idea, thank you.

Just out of curiosity, MNHQ, how many recipients were there last year?

It is totally up to you. Some people like to wrap the gifts and put a note in for the parents and others like to send the gift and some stuff to wrap it and others just send a gift.

It is totally up to the individual <helpful>

Registered to donate. I was nominated last year but never received anything so hope there wasn't a sender waiting for me to thank them sad

I love the MN secret santa it's so lovely

Oh, Custard that is ODD!
I very much suspect a Royal Mail malfunction to blame rather than anything else. How lovely you are that you are going to donate this year anyway. thanks

MrsVamos Mon 08-Oct-12 23:34:58

I have also registered to donate.

The messages always make me cry, and give you such a lovely, warm feeling.

Have only been here a few years but it always makes Christmas feel a bit more special.

Have nominated. smile

InkleWinkle Mon 08-Oct-12 23:58:02

Oh wow it really feels like Christmas now grin

Fizzylemonade Tue 09-Oct-12 06:37:50

Re wrapping the gifts, I previously wrapped them but didn't stick them shut that way they could be checked before they were given.

Love doing this every year.

Nominated and donated

I did giggle at this though.

"considerably clearer than her what did it last year"

Fairyjen Tue 09-Oct-12 10:59:49

Just nominated. Lovely lovely.

Rather disappointed though had visions of MNHQ dressing a Santa and crawling across roof tops to hand deliver gifts.

That would be more festive you know.

Would it help if we donated the outfits?

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 09-Oct-12 11:40:54

Well if it's gin you want, then I'm the person you need... <checks watch>

I love the MN secret Santa, tis magic, and just let me know if you need highlighters for your spreadsheets Rebecca, I have spares. They even glow in the dark grin

Just nominated as well.
Going through my Christmas early buy bargains now to see if I can donate something this year smile

SummerRain Tue 09-Oct-12 13:13:26

It's lovely to see this still going. I was a recipient the first ever year and quite honestly things were so bad that year we would have had nothing without some kind MNers sending parcels for the kids.

You can't imagine how wonderful a feeling it was smile

I can't participate this year sadly but just wanted to let anyone dithering about donating know... For some recipients this can be the difference between having Christmas or not, for others going through a really shitty time this year for reasons other than financial, getting something can help them feel a bit less overwhelmed and show them that someone out there is thinking of them. I can't stress enough how much of a difference that caring gesture can make to the recipient.

Grockle Tue 09-Oct-12 13:32:18

Oh, how lovely. I remember the first year this happened. I've never received anything but used to donate and I loved it. Even if it was only something small, it was nice to do something for someone & the receivers always seemed so grateful.I wish I could promise to donate this year but I'm not well & face losing my job so time and money are tight. If I manage to make something over the next couple of weeks, I will donate it. I just wanted to say how wonderful this is & how glad I am that it is still going. Well done Mumsnet smile

Gumby Tue 09-Oct-12 13:34:15

Summer

<sniffs> Lump in throat.

I have just told my DCs 'we' are doing this this year, as a family, and have offered a donation. It's not much, we are having a pretty tough time but I reckon there are probably quite a few people having a tougher time, so if my small donation goes a tiny way to giving someone a contribution to their Christmas, which they would have gone without, then that's better than an extra present or more treats for us.

oh I love this - have nominated and am donating !

ScaryBOOAlot Tue 09-Oct-12 14:27:19

I received gift for both DS and myself the year before last, and it made my Christmas. It really did. This is such a wonderful event, and so sums up the spirit of MN.

Thanks for organising again.

MOSagain Tue 09-Oct-12 16:09:25

SR (((hugs))) sniff sniff sniff
NSF I can remember your fabulous DH climbing moutains with his laptop, bless him, he was a complete star.

Have nominated and donating too. This is truly one of the best things about MN.
Weirdly, the people I bought for the last few years have ended up as friends. Small world grin

MummyDoIt Tue 09-Oct-12 17:10:08

So glad this is going ahead again. We were recipients our first Christmas after DH died. The kindness of the wonderful MNetters who thought of us meant so much to me. I love to donate now in the hope that I can give someone else a bit of that warm and fuzzy feeling.

FancyPuffin Tue 09-Oct-12 17:13:25

maillotjaune Tue 09-Oct-12 20:21:40

ScaryBOOAlot Tue 09-Oct-12 20:29:46

Maillotjaune - if ou go onto the donation option, it asks if its for a DC or MNetter smile

maillotjaune Tue 09-Oct-12 20:38:31

Thankyou!

acsec Tue 09-Oct-12 20:44:25

I've offered to be a donor. I loved reading the thank you thread last year and couldn't wait to be a part of this! smile

mamapower Tue 09-Oct-12 21:00:03

Done/offered to be a donor. Last year was a real low point for me and I was so lucky to receive a gift. To my nominator and donor I was so very very grateful for the cheer this brought and this year I can put a smile on someone else's face I hope smile

For both. Some mums give every last thing to their DC so it is really nice to give them a treat too.
Whatever you would like yourself would be lovely smile

PinkChampagneandStrawberries Tue 09-Oct-12 21:25:30

I hadn't discovered MN last year <slow> but this is such a wonderful idea I will definitely be taking part.

The person I would like to nominate hasn't been around recently (or I have just not seen her) or she has possibly NC'd, hopefully she will be back and get something smile

SomebodySaveMe Tue 09-Oct-12 21:27:29

I'd love to donate. Is there a rough price range for the gift/voucher or is it just what people can afford?

BigBroomstickBIWI Tue 09-Oct-12 21:55:51

It's up to you - what you want to give/what you can afford

SomebodySaveMe Tue 09-Oct-12 22:03:17

Excellent. I'm really looking forward to donating. Seems much better than doing a sodding shoebox!!

WineGless Tue 09-Oct-12 22:13:22

Don't mention the shoe boxes! Corruption 😡

This is a special part of Christmas for me. I also joined in donating to refuge last year. There was a link to john Lewis to buy a gift for a child living in dv refuge

I am lucky enough to have food on the table and presents for my children. I want to give a little back to those who aren't so lucky this year

SomebodySaveMe Tue 09-Oct-12 22:19:22

I'm currently miscarrying so distracting myself with finding good Xmas deeds to do.

I wanted to donate last year but we weren't in the position to do so. I now just need to find some way of giving to others for my nursery group to join in with!

(((somebody)))
You are a truly lovely person

Karma knows this thanks

NewNames Tue 09-Oct-12 22:38:27

Yes, can we donate a voucher for a few quid? Or does it need to be substantial, like fifty quid?

new the important thing is the love that goes with it, not the amount

WineGless Tue 09-Oct-12 22:41:53

Somebody - didn't want to read and run. Thoughts and prayers with you tonight x

SomebodySaveMe Tue 09-Oct-12 22:45:38

Thank you. I'm holding on to the thought that perhaps it wasn't a viable pregnancy and we can try again when we feel ready.

Is it best to donate vouchers? I imagine they'd be better so that recipients had a choice but does it look like I hadn't put any thought into it? I may possibly be over thinking this donating business!

somebody vouchers are BRILLIANT. Or if you would like to then a tiny little present as well would be sweet (nice soap, little jewellery, small toy)
This is really one time where the thought GENUINELY does count.

Slainte Tue 09-Oct-12 23:10:51

WineGless could you post a link to the refuge appeal or pm it to me if this isn't the appropriate thread to post this on. Thanks smile

I loved doing this last year - was the best thing I did, and my whole family got involved choosing and wrapping gifts for a lovely MNetter and her family.

Have offered to donate again this year and am looking forward to receiving details of this year's sponsoree (is that a word?)

<<waves>> to my fellow low-carbers on this thread grin

Baaartimaeus Wed 10-Oct-12 13:06:04

Can it be something bought off a website (e.g. Amazon) and sent directly to the receiver? I live abroad so would like to avoid wasting money on postage when it could be spent on pressies smile

Nominated and donated but I couldn't leave the "who is it for" bit blank but left a comment at the bottom. Is that okay?

MOSagain Wed 10-Oct-12 13:46:32

Baaartimaues thats what I did the past few years when I lived in the ME (and the post took around 6 weeks!) You can buy and send to the recipient.

I love choosing for the children each year and my DC get involved and help choose too.

I am so glad to see this. I have donated in past years, I haven't received ever (not that I have ever given to receive, I have always had a lovely warm feeling knowing I was making someone's Christmas a bit easier by sending a gift) but I couldn't do it last year - I had lost my job due to me being ill and was absolutely skint. I hated it and felt really bad about it and after Christmas realised that although I was skint, I had a lovely family around me so things were not so bad after all and there are plenty of people who don't even have that. I promised myself though that when things got better I would repay all the lovely help and the company that I get from MN. This year things are still shitty, my lovely dad has just started chemo and not expected to live long, however I do have a job and I am determined to make Christmas as nice for everyone as I can. If I can make one person happier by sending them a gift or something for their dc's then it will make me feel so much better. A small sacrifice can make such a difference to someone else.

I love that MN does this every year and I love reading the thank you thread after Christmas. I usually go out with my SDD's to do the Christmas shopping and love picking the pressies to send.

Offered to donate smile

SomebodySaveMe Thu 11-Oct-12 17:29:26

That made my morning grin

Did the dog enjoy so much wanking?!

If we put "voucher" can the type of voucher be chosen when we know who it is for? Or should we say Amazon/Boots/Laithwaites/Tesco/ELC or whatever?

MainlyMaynie Thu 11-Oct-12 19:09:40

I filled in the form to donate, but I said I would choose a gift when I know the recipient. I've never done this before and just read the thread and think this isn't the right thing. Should I have decided what to give before I filled in the form?

Thank you Lola. I have had the shittiest day ever and that produced my first smile of the day. I'm really glad I don't have a dog....

Either way is fine Milliways, just 'voucher' or a specific voucher, it is up to you.

Again, this is fine. Some people liked to be matched with families with similar age children so they know what sot of thing to get but others are happy to wait and see.

Right, I have filled out the donate form, I don't have anyone specific to nominate, as these days I dip in and out a lot. I'm happy for the MN nominated consensus, so to speak.

So do I just sit tight and wait for instruction?

I didn't do this ly, found out too late, as had quite a lot to deal with in the latter part of the year, and read the thank you thread with much regret.

Could someone give me a guide for the best kind of vouchers to buy? I'm doing this from outside the UK, so was thinking Argos or such, as they always seem to have deals on toys this time of year, does that sound like a plan?

Hope I've done it right x

So glad that I found this finally! I have been checking the Discussions of the day/most active for a few days with no luck so eventually went searching.....hooray!
I had a really crappy year last year and it made me feel so lovely to be able to donate to a mystery somebody so will very gladly do it again this year!

.....trundles off feeling all warm and fuzzy.......

FairyPenguin Fri 12-Oct-12 19:00:36

I'm not on MN as much as others, and lurk more than I post, but I found last year's thread so amazing that I had to donate this year. Feeling all warm and fluffy inside. smile

LoganMummy Fri 12-Oct-12 21:24:18

FairyPenguin - exactly the same here!

MrsWembley Fri 12-Oct-12 21:55:34

I've just told DP about doing this last year. Never told him at the time as he's always a bit 'you don't know who you're giving to and half of it's wasted on bribes before it gets there' about lots of charities and I figured something like this he'd be even more hmm. RNLI and Lifeboats, that's his two and if he can help anyone out personally he's right there, but organised...? strangers...? taking things on trust...?

I have totally undervalued and underestimated him. He asked what I spent last year and told me to multiply it by 2.5... Now I'm crying at how much I love him...

MrsVamoOOOOOs Fri 12-Oct-12 22:06:28

That's lovely, MrsWembley.

I used to be known as MrsWembley on another forum. Good name ! grin

thegreylady Sat 13-Oct-12 13:32:39

I was so touched to be nominated last year and loved my gifts :-)
I would really like to donate this year. Mums net has done so much for me I'd like to give something back.

Thanks Mumsnet Towers!

I was a lucky recipient last year and I still have absolutely no idea who nominated me or why (although I guess that's why it's called secret santa!).

So this year I have offered to donate as the gifts sent to my dd were lovely and she still plays with them all smile. I hope I can make someone else's dc happy this year. <<wells up>>

TheMonster Sat 13-Oct-12 19:28:13

BelinaTheChicken Sun 14-Oct-12 09:08:09

Does the gift have to be new? I have some toys in excellent condition, can only tell they aren't new as they have no box. Would this be ok?

BlameItOnTheCuervForHumanBlood Sun 14-Oct-12 20:51:48

I have a question, can we nominate non-troll banned mners in recognition of all their good advice, support and friendship over the years, and because they are having a time of it? Esp since you hope that hq will relent when she's done her time and let her back?

Portofino Sun 14-Oct-12 20:52:43

Belina, I guess for little kids that would be fine. I personally have a big hate thing with the packaging!

If they are not a MNetter then we probably won't include them in the MN secret santa. Feel free to PM me.

Rebecca, have pmed you. and batted my eyelashes.

The John Lewis Gift List was great last year, it's guaranteed that if I have to go out and BUY something and remember to post it then I won't.}}

Can we get another gift list on ze go?

If somebody is very very nice to me I will even volunteer to put it together seeing as I'm work with my torn cruciate ligaments!

A toy, games etc. Anything is fine, no matter how big or small. Maybe think what your child or a child you know of a similar age would like?

Nominations and Donations are currently neck and neck, please share across the boards, only one week left to get them in.

I'm planning on donating one of the toys I'm getting for DS (so buying the toy twice IYSWIM). That way I know it's age appropriate and nice smile

BelinaTheChicken Mon 15-Oct-12 18:37:31

Portofino it's Happyland stuff, so for little ones. And I always take them out of the box before wrapping them anyway, nothing works than fiddling around with ties and boxes with a toddler desperate to play with something!

BelinaTheChicken Mon 15-Oct-12 18:37:44

BlameItOnTheCuervForHumanBlood Tue 16-Oct-12 22:50:23

Winegless, everyone knows about it. Its stickied.

WineGless Tue 16-Oct-12 23:07:35

Some folk don't go on active convos though. Worth a mention as its only open till end of the week

BigBroomstickBIWI Tue 16-Oct-12 23:07:48

I'm always amazed at how often people miss the stickies though, BlameIt. If you don't use Active Convos, you won't see it, I don't think.

NormaStanleyFletcher Tue 16-Oct-12 23:19:46

Could MN put it as a sticky ay the top of chat and aibu?

BlameItOnTheCuervForHumanBlood Tue 16-Oct-12 23:35:25

I dunno, I just don't like the idea of people feeling guilted into donating.

WineGless Tue 16-Oct-12 23:37:35

I agree with that, it's just that every year people come on asking to get involved after the closing date as they haven't seen it.

Would be great to have a big klaxon alert so that everyone knows about it and can make their own minds up

BlameItOnTheCuervForHumanBlood Wed 17-Oct-12 07:45:19

There doesn't seem as much time this year tbh

Shinyshoes1 Wed 17-Oct-12 09:29:16

I have an item arrived this morning that was bought through Storysenders. (set up by mumsnetters) As far as I knew I bought the item and Storysenders sent it straight to the refuge.

It was sent to my house. I have this item to donate now

watchoutforthatsnail Wed 17-Oct-12 10:53:42

i think it could probably do with a sticky in chat and aibu and a few other high traffic places.
Ive been on here for over 6 years and dont use active convos.
I only found it by chance when i was bored, looking at the christmas topic.
It is very early to be thinking about christmas for a lot of people, so this might not even be on their radar, they might not even be thinking of looking for it...... But, if they were to miss out on either nominating or donating they would be gutted.

( have nominated. not in a position to donate, sadly)

skyebluezombie Wed 17-Oct-12 11:11:52

I only stumbled on it by chance too and think it should be stickied on all busy traffic areas!. It's a great idea but not everybody knows about it.

OliviaMumsnet (MNHQ) Wed 17-Oct-12 19:48:53

Hmm
Thanks for this, we will have a think at the Towers about how best to alert folk to this.
Thanks
MNHQ

skyebluezombie Wed 17-Oct-12 20:34:55

I have just donated. Really want to nominate, but so many people have been helpful to me, its difficult to just pick one. and so many people are having a bad time, its hard to know who to pick there either :-(

Will keep thinking.....

Help, I want to donate. After being nominated last year, it was such a pleasure. However I can't afford financially much and I don't know what to get. I am also unable to leave the house much having been in house arrest for over 2 year with my disabled son who doesn't attend school etc and doesn't do anything socially.

Ideas would be great, TIA x

Iv'e just came across a post similar to mine and the advice on there clicked, so now know what to get grin

ZombTEE Thu 18-Oct-12 20:24:14

I almost missed the deadline!

Perhaps it would be better if this wasn't in the Christmas topic...which I have hidden.

I only knew about it because someone mentioned it elsewhere.

And I just read up before posting and saw this has been mentioned already. grin

I have just nominated 2 of my very favourite Mners. They would know who they are if they saw this.
I have never seen this thread before and always wondered how we nominate!
I have in the past received some lovely packages through this appeal which have brought me to tears.
I am so pleased to be able to something small for someone else (hopes they get chosen to receive)

I'd really like to donate, but no way would I be able to afford to do it to the level that I have received.
I know the OP says nothing is too small, but really not sure.
Not long to decide.......

stickyj Sat 20-Oct-12 18:01:35

I have been on here for years and years. Mr Sticky has put up with all my musings about Xmas, helping fellow mumsnetters and lighting candles in our house for people that need them.

I have explained about the candle map we use and now just accepts when I mention that I am lighting a candle for

Years ago, I sent him off, with a large parcel that my children had helped me assemble, to an address we were given. He sat outside the house for ages, as he didn't just want to leave it on the doorstep. Hours later, the person came back and he just handed it over.

Thanks Mr Sticky for believing in me and Mumsnet.

We do good, we do and we are mice people. I love Christmas and I know how hard this year will be for lots of people.

My Dad has gone, three weeks ago and i miss him.

Every time i light candles at home, I really of think of everyone that I can remember on here, from the early days when we all waited for "Pink Peter" to little Allidh. My son is 14 on Monday and he always made sure we had candles burning, every night, for all "your people/children" Mum, he lit them when I had gone to bed early and he didn't like the fact they had gone out.

Of anyone needs help for themselves of their children, just a little help, to make Christmas special, please just ask. Ask and those of us that can, will help. x

stickyj Sat 20-Oct-12 18:03:02

We are not mice people blush, I have just grown my nails...WE ARE NICE PEOPLE!!!!

I only joined MN last week ( and I'm leafy obsessed!) and already I've read threads that have made me laugh loudly and weep quietly, I've read threads that have brought back memories of my own and threads that have made me so very grateful for all that I have. I take as a great honour to nominate and to be able to donate to someone this year.

Have only just seen this due to the sticky in AIBU - I never even knew MN ran such a scheme! I've got a spare present that I bought for a friend's daughter for Christmas. However, we're no longer swapping presents due to lack of finances but as I'd already bought her present and I don't know any other child it would be suitable for, I'm going to donate it.

No idea who to nominate though. There are a few people who stick out for me but think MN will be inundated with noms for them. Will have a think.

Have nominated and donated. smile

I have donated - a voucher. Do you think that a supermarket voucher is a good idea? It could be used for essentials, Christmas food or toys....

Not sure hmm

catgirl1976 Sun 21-Oct-12 20:08:57

I was wondering that as most supermarkets do toys, xmas food, drink and stuff

But is ir a bit dull for a present or would it be really useful? I

crazynanna Sun 21-Oct-12 20:09:23

Mrs DV......just,for me,having anything to do with you is enough.
You are a legend
If you gave a cotton reel...it would be spoken about for a long time!

smile

MrsDeVere Sun 21-Oct-12 20:11:25

OMG Crazynanna you make me blush

I will send you a cotton reel if you want though grin

fluffacloud Sun 21-Oct-12 20:26:03

Catgirl - I think that it will depend on who the voucher is given to?

When I was very young we didn't have much and I know that my DM would have valued a Tesco voucher more than a M&S one, simply because you can buy more with it.

Personally I'd buy as much Galaxy as I could with a Tesco voucher - but that's just me! grin

crazynanna Sun 21-Oct-12 20:31:06

I await my cottonreel.

smile

catgirl1976 Sun 21-Oct-12 20:33:30

Well that's it....you don't know who it's going to - it might be someone who would love a Tesco vouchers (as I would have done a few years ago) or someone who might like a luxury Jo Malone bubble bath

Tricksy! smile Perhaps a vouchers and something lux is the way to go.......?

PiggeryJokery Sun 21-Oct-12 20:50:02

Thanks for the spam (on the naff sentiments thread)! I have been meaning to donate, hadn't even seen the appeal was open and have squeaked in with hours to spare!

PurpleCrazyHorse Sun 21-Oct-12 20:55:06

Just seen the message in Chat, always wondered how to get involved. Not nominated as I can never remember anyone's MN name, barely remember family names!! However, definitely looking forward to buying for someone.

Roll on Christmas smile

PurpleCrazyHorse Sun 21-Oct-12 20:55:36

I was gonna give high street vouchers. Do you think I should.give something else?

skyebluezombie Sun 21-Oct-12 21:15:23

catgirl1976 Sun 21-Oct-12 21:22:53

You can spend them in so many different places so whoever got them would get loads of choice

So happy to have just got in before the deadline this year smile

Boomerwang Mon 22-Oct-12 08:51:17

I would like to take part but I have no idea who to nominate. I wish I'd spotted this earlier as I'd rather nominate someone who needs a gift rather than someone I see a lot on the forum.

Also not sure how to donate, because I'm not well off myself and I live in Sweden so postage costs could be high. I'm thinking of some kind of internet voucher? A useful one I mean. And not one you can simply download for yourself. Can I donate cash? It's not very Christmassy I suppose. It'd be no good making a thread about it as it won't be very anonymous then will it sad

I'll put my thinking cap on. I'm sure I have plenty of useful stuff, particularly for babies.

Hi BIWI,

We have put it in the latest box and in the Newsletter, it has been stickied for two weeks and to give us time to sort it all out, we have to close it today.
This year the response has been terrifying amazing.
