Hi

Those of you who do Elf on the Shelf - where did you get your elf from please? Links would be appreciated.

Thanks!

tummytickler Fri 07-Oct-11 14:19:28

What is Elf on the Shelf?

OOh, I didn't know what they were but I have just Googled and now I really want one. DD and DS would love it. Expensive though!

NoHunIntended Fri 07-Oct-11 14:38:00

tt, it's a Christmas elf (Santa's Little Helper) that sits on a shelf and keeps an eye on your child/ren during the run up to Christmas (or all year, if you like!), then reports back to Santa in time to let him know whether your child has been naughty or nice, and therefore deserving of presents or not!
You can make a game of hiding the elf in a new place every day in December and have the children try and find him/her.

See: www.amazon.co.uk/Elf-Shelf-Christmas-Tradition-Gift/dp/B000XR6MBQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1317994357&sr=8-1. I was just wondering if there was a more awesome elf about! I do quite like this one though!

It's all expensive, Sunshine! smile Though I see things like this as an investment, it can be re-used every year, and then passed on to the next generation.

Yes, you're right, it would be an investment and come out year after year. May see if I can get a little elf slightly cheaper. Thanks for the idea though!

LordOfTheFlies Fri 07-Oct-11 17:08:32

EotS comes with a book so you can record all through December. You hide him every evening in a different place and the DC have to find him . Then on the 24th he 'magically' disappears back to the North Pole to report to Father Christmas.

Last year I made on using green and red felt to dress a Christopher Eccleson Dr Who Doll. ( Originally wanted an Action Man but can't find a cheap one and DS hasn't got his)

Will look in The Entertainer- they had A -Team dolls. I'm sure Hannible or Mr T won't mind being dressed up in Elf shoes, green suit and a matching hat! grin

NoHunIntended Fri 07-Oct-11 17:55:24

Ooh, brookeslay, that is a lovely one, thank you. I won't commit just yet in case anyone comes along with a nicer one. In my mind I envisaged him looking more vintage/old-school.

Sunshine, will you let me know which one you get?

LotF, what gets recorded in the book?

WitchesBrewIsMyFriend Fri 07-Oct-11 17:56:30

oh I want one.

NoHunIntended Fri 07-Oct-11 17:57:05

P.S. LotR, Mr.T dressed up as an elf? I pity the fool! grin

tummytickler Fri 07-Oct-11 18:43:15

Ooooh - they are lovely! I might be tempted!

NoHunIntended Fri 07-Oct-11 19:20:51

Er, I meant LotF not LotR - must truly have elves on my mind!

tickler, do it!

I will let you know which one I get. Will have a search online tonight. Any excuse to get something for Christmas and I'm on to it grin

brookeslay Fri 07-Oct-11 19:43:08

That's a great website!

WinterIsComing Fri 07-Oct-11 21:14:08

That's a pretty good idea. Had to giggle at, "Manufacturer recommended age: 36 months - 18 years" though grin

NoHunIntended Fri 07-Oct-11 21:35:37

Utterly adorable! Thanks! smile

winefairy Sat 08-Oct-11 10:06:34

I ordered the Amazon one a while back after seeing it on another thread here and he is actually nicer in real life. He does look vintage, NoHun, as he is a kneehugger which were popular in the 50's. I still have my Grandparents original ones.

To me he's worth the money as he appears for most of December (think of the old S&B 'Costs Per Wear' theory) and he will also be responsible for the Christmas Eve pj hamper in the Winefairy house. He shall be worked hard!

Haribojoe Sat 08-Oct-11 16:30:12

Have ordered mine today, he will be "arriving" on the morning of our pre-Christmas Christmas day (the day when we decorate the house).

MonsterBookOfHorrors Sat 08-Oct-11 16:42:35

Hi NoHun smile
It is a great idea.
Last year we got desperate as ds was being naughty due to excitement. In the end we put our santa tree decoration up in his bedroom and told him santa was watching. It really does work! grin
I may invest on an elf. Thanks for the idea.
Have you tried ebay, they may have new ones on there. smile

NoHun I've just ordered the one from Amazon! Will let you know what he's like when he arrives.

NoHunIntended Sat 08-Oct-11 21:00:21

Thanks, winefairy, good to know he looks a bit vintage, and nicer in real life.
You are right re the value for money if he's used every Christmas, and then passed on. I have seen a gorgeous elf for 100 but that's a bit of a crazy price, even if he's passed on seven generations!!! Isn't it? <tempted><reminds self I am not to be a fool soon parted with my money><oh but I want him!!!>.

Enjoy your elf, Haribo.
Ooh, Sunshine, exciting!

Hi, Monster!! smile
I have looked on ebay, etsy, Amazon, lots of places, just want to make sure the Aurora one is the nicest available before I go for it (apart from the overpriced Waldorf-style one).

JjandtheBeanlovesUnicorns Sat 08-Oct-11 21:28:23

The aurora one is adorable! I neeeed it!

MonsterBookOfHorrors Sat 08-Oct-11 22:14:38

That's the one I liked on ebay, go for it smile

twolittledarlings Sat 08-Oct-11 23:16:00

I love this idea. Have found cheaper postage on prezzybox website.

Now just wondering if I should get 1 or 2 as I have 2 DD ages soon to be 8 and 10 at Christmas. Are they too old?

NoHunIntended Sun 09-Oct-11 00:14:52

tld, can you link to it on prezzybox please - I don't seem to be able to find it on there.

I think I'd get one for each child. I think I'd have liked the idea still at 10.

Prezzybox Elf

It's the same one as I've ordered from Amazon but looks to be out of stock on Prezzybox at the moment.

twolittledarlings Sun 09-Oct-11 12:08:17

Thank you Sunshine - did not notice the out of stock details.

Have now ordered 2 from Amazon and the good thing was that postage was only £5 and not 2 lots of £4.50.

Hope it works for my 8 yr old dd. My dd 10 year old is very good but the 8 yr old dd can sometimes be moody. Alas, cannot buy for one and not the other.

tld I've only ordered one - couldn't afford another, so I'm hoping that DD and DS will share. Although apparently in the story book that comes with the elf it says that the children are not supposed to touch the elf or he may lose his magic, so at least that will stop them fighting over who gets to hold him!

NoHunIntended Sun 09-Oct-11 17:02:24

Thanks for the link. I think we will go for the soft fabric one, unless someone finds me another one!

twolittledarlings Sun 09-Oct-11 21:58:06

Gosh. Have an email from Amazon that the 2 dolls have been despatched already. That's quick work and on a Sunday too.

Apparently, they come in 2 colours, dark or light skinned. The Amazon ones sent from The House of Portia are light skinned ones.

I had the email too to say mine has been dispatched. Just did the tracking think on Interlink Express and it was down yesterday as next day delivery so may be here today!

What a lovely idea! I like these elves - boy and girl. (I assume anyway).

KinkyDorito Mon 10-Oct-11 16:01:06

I'm sorry. I searched Amazon for 'Christmas Elf' and had to share one of the results. Anyone's DC going to a costume party? Apparently this is a Christmas Elf costume:

www.amazon.co.uk/Christmas-Outfit-Childrens-Costume-Parties/dp/B005ARC66Y/ref=sr_1_42?ie=UTF8&qid=1318258729&sr=8-42

confused

I'd seen those mackerel and agree they look cute. They were my second choice.

Funny looking elf kinkydorito !

NoHunIntended Mon 10-Oct-11 17:28:39

Mack, I like those a lot - they are on Amazon too, and come as a pair, so if you are buying both, they work out slightly cheaper: www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B005OIT5TK/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&m=ALWV5W1DGU0FF.

I think I prefer the Aurora one, but I am still holding out a little while longer in case a more ace elf turns up!

Kinky, odd, very odd!

JjandtheBeanlovesUnicorns Mon 10-Oct-11 17:39:16

Ooh if only aurora one was available as a boy and girl, think I may jump ship to macks find...

Oh thanks for the link nohun deffinalty gonna get them now smile

Pigleychez Mon 10-Oct-11 18:23:38

What an appropriate thread! I just found out about this today from Pinterest and love the whole idea.

Agree that the Elf isn't the most attractive but I like the idea of the bendy arms and legs. I've literally just started to have a go at making one myself so I'll let you know how I get on. It is a bit expensive too.
Cant wait to start planning all the different places he can hide and naughty things he can get up to! <Must remember to do it every evening!>

WinterIsComing Mon 10-Oct-11 19:08:45

grin at the Old Testament Prophet "Elf"!

NoHunIntended Mon 10-Oct-11 19:56:54

My pleasure, Jj.

Pigley, I am tempted to attempt making one too. Would you start from scratch, or buy some sort of plain doll and just make/find the outfit? Any tips welcome.

Smugfearnleyshittingstool Mon 10-Oct-11 22:48:06

We did this for the first time last year, dc are 10,7 and 1. It was a complete success and way more fun than the avert calendar, they loved him to bits.

I picked up naughty Nick from a local wi market, a lady had knitted him and he is so lovely. I am sure she used a pattern and he has a turned up nose and Xmas pud belly! He arrived on the first and went home with Santa on Xmas eve. Every night he got up to some mischief, green wee in the loo etc. This yr he is bringing his lovely lady friend with him. I can't wait, they will go mad for it!

I even have cadburys popping choc elves for them to fill the calendars with every night. The whole thing is a big hit here!! I just need a name for the lady elf now.....

Smugfearnleyshittingstool Mon 10-Oct-11 22:51:14

This year ours will also be found in the drivers seat of my car with it parked across the drive and slightly crashed in to the hedge! Snow angels on the floor in icing sugar was good last yr, and they loved it when he turned up at grandma's house, warming his bum on her aga. Ds still goes on about it now.

I am stupidly excited about our elves.....

Ours has just arrived from Amazon today! He looks lovely, can't wait for the 1st December and to read DD and DS the story that comes with it.

smug you've given me some good ideas there - especially love the green wee in the loo grin

JjandtheBeanlovesUnicorns Tue 11-Oct-11 10:29:19

smug they're brilliant ideas, I have to get elves now. My two will only be 3 and 4 so limited humour, although toilet and underwear humour seems a good one, maybe elves dressing up in mine and daddys underwear? Hanging from a lampshade, playing on the wii... I can see myself getting carried away here.

Haribojoe Tue 11-Oct-11 10:45:19

My elf has just arrived, can't open it to have a look though due to "little eyes" will have to wait till nap time!

JjandtheBeanlovesUnicorns Tue 11-Oct-11 10:53:08

Oh haribo how exciting!

I've found a girl aurora one on ebay (stupid app won't let me link though) I think she's a bit to 'mrs christmas' for me though so I'm sticking with the peppermint elves, but seeing as they aren't with a book I'm going to make my own as I want the pictures to be of our elves iyswim, but I don't know where to start?

Pigleychez Tue 11-Oct-11 11:59:17

NoHun- Ive uploaded a photo of my elf so far onto my profile. Its not great and just something I was playing about with last night.

He needs more detail on him... elf shoes, belt, pom pom on his hat etc.

My gut reaction is he's abit shit! and that ill end up buying a real one anyway! But I will finish him off before I do.

Jj- My girls are only 3.2 and 16 mths so too will only have to basic stuff. But im storing all these ideas for when they get older. smile

pigley the one you've made is good! Yours girls will love him. Mine doesn't have a belt, pom pom on his hat or shoes.

JjandtheBeanlovesUnicorns Tue 11-Oct-11 12:18:58

Pigley I love your elf! Very cute!!

Also the pictures of your girls are so very beautiful smile

WinterIsComing Tue 11-Oct-11 12:55:00

He's lovely, Pigley, as are all your pictures.

Keep the ideas coming please, I'm useless. I'll either lose him or he'll get left behind on Christmas Eve and end up being discovered slumped face first in "Santa's" vodka and tonic blush

Actually I could have him sitting down next to a finished bowl of cereal of plate of toast crumbs one morning.

JjandtheBeanlovesUnicorns Tue 11-Oct-11 14:32:30

Dp has said if I stop talking about elves he'll buy them friday.

He said, "mumsnet makes you fucking mental, I am NOT parking my car badly so you can blame an elf, its october ffs"

Hehe, he's buying them though! grin

Anyone know where I could look at the story online, I want some framework for writing my own

JjandtheBeanlovesUnicorns Tue 11-Oct-11 14:33:22

Whoops, he's just corrected me, "its only october ffs, calm down"

NoHunIntended Tue 11-Oct-11 14:35:04

Loving the green wee in the idea - so borrowing that idea! Thanks, smug. What is Naughty Nick? I can kinda guess, but your best explanation might be better!

Ooh, exciting all the elves arriving.

Pigley, very impressive - he looks great! And unfinished, so I think you could have a really good elf when you are done! I do like a personal touch. Keep us posted, please. LOVE your woodland fairy daughters - you are my kind of person! smile

Winter, lovely idea re breakfast! Oh, there is so much to do! <excited!>

Pigleychez Tue 11-Oct-11 14:35:08

Have you looked on the Elf on the Shelf website? I havent had a good look yet but the little videos at the beginning might help give you ideas.

NoHunIntended Tue 11-Oct-11 14:39:20

X-posted! Ha ha @ your DP, Jj! smile
Only October??? It is ONLY 11 weeks to go! Less than, actually!

Mumsnet does indeed fill us with crazy ideas! smile Thank goodness!

Yes, what is the story please?

WinterIsComing Tue 11-Oct-11 14:39:51

grin at Jj's DP's quote including the immortal, "calm down", and not wanting to park his car badly!

Off to look at the website smile

JjandtheBeanlovesUnicorns Tue 11-Oct-11 14:49:18

I went to tell him, and he stopped me and said "don't say the word" ha jokes on him I thought on my feet and said santas little helper.

I can't look at the videos sad my laptops broked, oh unless they're youtube I can access that.

JjandtheBeanlovesUnicorns Tue 11-Oct-11 14:52:57
WinterIsComing Tue 11-Oct-11 14:53:03

Just for youJj

I'm now a bit scared of the theme song.

JjandtheBeanlovesUnicorns Tue 11-Oct-11 17:34:35

<Rocks in corner>

That has the potential to be some scary ass horror film

NoHunIntended Tue 11-Oct-11 18:42:11

The Elf On The Shelf is Watching YOU!

JjandtheBeanlovesUnicorns Tue 11-Oct-11 18:47:25

<Sobs>

NoHunIntended Tue 11-Oct-11 19:04:39

<puts clothes on>

JjandtheBeanlovesUnicorns Tue 11-Oct-11 19:27:53

anyway hmm

Now --the scary ass theme tune has scarred me for life----i see the books etc seem to be based on that elf I'm going to make my own up, I'm --brilliant ok at drawing so that way it can feature my elves.

Still managing not to mention them to dp, think ill make it to friday...

Oh btw ebay have the pair of peppermint elves for £8.49 bargain!

JjandtheBeanlovesUnicorns Tue 11-Oct-11 19:29:00

Well I fucked that up didn't I hmm

WinterIsComing Tue 11-Oct-11 19:43:06

grin at NoHun.

Isn't it a pity that most people don't have elves. Imagine going in for pre-Christmas drinks, seeing the elf with his innocent little face turned towards the wall and knowing that the householders had clearly been getting amorous on the sofa recently.

JjandtheBeanlovesUnicorns Tue 11-Oct-11 20:44:38

Shouldn't eat and mumsnet I just sprayed potatoe on my phone

<Makes mental note to ensure elves are suitably positioned after ahem smex so people don't suss us out>

WinterIsComing Tue 11-Oct-11 20:55:52

I might make an elf with a shock face.

We could have a bit of a laugh posting pictures of what our elves get up to. I need some practice for the Reception Bear which I have been threatened with via a newsletter.

tummytickler Tue 11-Oct-11 21:01:53

I can't decide what to do! If I ever get over the theme tune, I wonder if something like this would be nice. I am more a fir cones and greenery decorator , so I think these might fit the decor better <mega saddo emoticon> but are they Christmassy enough (or indeed threatening enough for the dc!)

Pigleychez Tue 11-Oct-11 21:27:09

[Grin] at the Idea of Me elf seeing more than he should! - Not that he would in this house!

Ive finished my elf! Still un-decided... Pic on my profile.... should I just order a real one!?

DD1 caught me sewing abit earlier so had to explain that when I had finished I would send him to Santa to make him Magic. He would send him back to watch her and go back and tell Santa about her behaviour every night. She seemed to buy that and appeared quite excited by the idea.

NoHunIntended Tue 11-Oct-11 22:28:19

Maybe the adults need an elf as much as the children.

Brilliant work, Pigley, really good. I think I will get myself to the store for fabric, if I find something suitable I'll have a go, else, I'll just order Aurora.

Winter, ooh, we should so post photos of the elfy adventures!

WinterIsComing Tue 11-Oct-11 23:01:18

I can't wait for my elf now. I want to take him to dogging spots take photos of him reading shopping lists in trolleys. Come on Amazon!

NoHunIntended Tue 11-Oct-11 23:12:01

Ooh, I like this one: www.trendytree.com/raz-christmas-decorations/raz-29-elf-christmas-decoration.html. Not sure if they ship to the UK yet though.

Smugfearnleyshittingstool Tue 11-Oct-11 23:16:37

Naughty Nick just seemed to suit him, swinging from the lampshade under the mistletoe with the tree top fairy etc, should be erotic elf really! I'll dust off the laptop tomorrow and post some pics!

JjandtheBeanlovesUnicorns Tue 11-Oct-11 23:30:25

Pigley, your elfs brilliant! I wish I could sew, I'm a drawer give me a needle and I'm likely to end up bleeding sad

Come 1st of december we should have an elf antics thread, help share ideas and link pictures... [Grin]

twolittledarlings Wed 12-Oct-11 00:27:05

Just received my 2 elfs - cannot wait until December 1st.

Below are some ideas on where to put them.

www.complicatedmama.com/2010/11/return-of-elf-on-shelf-25-creative-ideas-to-hide-elf/

WinterIsComing Wed 12-Oct-11 00:31:49

JjandtheBeanlovesUnicorns Wed 12-Oct-11 13:03:44

Ok I'm getting obsessed with this thread,

Can't find the story online anywhere but my searching skills are --absolute shite-- a bit poor

WinterIsComing Wed 12-Oct-11 13:11:19

So am I, Jj; so am I...

Next year, this thread will be searchable and will be the definitive, most often-linked Elf on the Shelf ideas thread on the entire internet. I have the utmost faith in my fellow obsessives Mumsnetters.

NoHunIntended Wed 12-Oct-11 13:34:27

Wonderful links, tld. So adorable.

Should we steal condense the ideas into an easy list here?

Am getting so excited about all the mischief our elf will get up to!

winefairy Wed 12-Oct-11 13:38:12

Elf on the Shelf story being read on YouTube here. Not the best quality and quite annoying to watch at times but should give you all some ideas.

So pleased I got my EOTS now and relieved I'm not the only one ridiculously excited by the idea

winefairy Wed 12-Oct-11 13:43:37

And can I add I love your last linked elf, NoHun. He's fabulous.

Also loving Pigley's creation and the little Waldorf one that tummytickler linked to.

JjandtheBeanlovesUnicorns Wed 12-Oct-11 13:56:26

Thank you wine smile

Were thinking of making some biscuits and having him make snow angels in flour on the side.

Party in the dolls house, we have some battery christmas lights, make some mini paper chairs etc

Love the green wee idea.

NoHunIntended Wed 12-Oct-11 15:19:19

Isn't he a fabulous old elf! I can't decide whether EOTS should be old or young though. I prefer both of those to the one that comes with the book. I may yet wait til a Christmas Market and see what I can find there.

Snow angels in flour/icing sugar/glitter is a lovely idea.

MonsterBookOfHorrors Wed 12-Oct-11 16:11:13

I love the old elf. smile

wahwahwah Wed 12-Oct-11 16:14:47

He is Santas little snitch and reports back if the children misbehave. My sister sent ours over from the US.

We hide him around the place each night as he is very naughty - sometimes he climbs the christmas tree, empties the sugar bowl or sneaks some wine. We started this waaay to early last year and the 'escapades' got a bit lame towards the end ('oh look, he spent all night watching telly with a bowl of popcorn'.

JjandtheBeanlovesUnicorns Wed 12-Oct-11 17:53:35

As much as I adore the aurora one he is just too innocent for the high-jinks I'm thinking of. I'm getting the peppermint elves they're sweet, and a bit cheeky looking and they're only £11 for the pair delivered on ebay grin

NoHunIntended Wed 12-Oct-11 18:52:32

Yy, that is part of my reticence - Aurora isn't as cheeky as I'd like!

JjandtheBeanlovesUnicorns Wed 12-Oct-11 19:05:50

Wow that dad is annoying!

Am I the only --grumpy spoilsport-- strict parent who will stop reading if the kids arse around.

And wtaf is with saying zoooks every ten seconds...

And breath!

Still thanks for the link I have a rough idea what I'm doing now smile

JjandtheBeanlovesUnicorns Thu 13-Oct-11 14:55:33

Any more elves arrived? Or been found?

I'm counting down to tomorrow when I can order mine grin

JjandtheBeanlovesUnicorns Thu 13-Oct-11 14:57:29

I also had a few ideas,

Nearer to christmas day have him appear with the recipe for reindeer food.

Also someone mentioned chocolate elves?? I'd love to get these and use him as an advent kind of£

NoHunIntenDEAD Thu 13-Oct-11 18:56:35

Ooh, reindeer food recipe, that is a great idea, nice one!

Still not ordered mine yet, I am planning on going to Hyde Park for their Christmas Market/Fair, and see if I can find anything there, or think about making my own if I find some nice fabric, else, I think maybe the old elf, if they ship here, or that Gund Peppermint pair. Would be extra tempted to go for the pair if I had two children. What to do! What would Santa do???!

kennythekangaroo Thu 13-Oct-11 23:00:05

We had this girl one.

She was called Holly and DD(4) still talks about her now!

JjandtheBeanlovesUnicorns Thu 13-Oct-11 23:06:02

I'm getting the peppermints as I have well will have by christmas a 4yo ds and 3yo dd, will have to be one each competition in this house unreal, and I also want them to be something they pass on to there own children.

I'm ordering mine tomorrow grin

pissedrightoff Thu 13-Oct-11 23:23:51

I've ordered this...
www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LAGOON-GNOME-SWEET-GNOME-PLUSH-SOFT-TOY-VARIOUS-BNWT-/160660374743?pt=UK_Soft_Toys_Bears&var=&hash=item6b1c22d18b#ht_1646wt_932

The idea is he arrives on the 1st bringing the advent calendar, watches the children until 24th when he returns to the north pole but leaves behind the christmas eve hamper with all the goodies/pj's in it (providing they have been good of course)

pissedrightoff Thu 13-Oct-11 23:24:28

Anyone want to name him for me?? Can't think of a suitable Elf name.

JjandtheBeanlovesUnicorns Thu 13-Oct-11 23:46:00

Im hoping --i will be telling-- the dcs will call ours Holly and Jolly

Twee, yes, cheesy yes, but tis the season to be jolly tra la la la la la la la laaa

startail Fri 14-Oct-11 00:11:31

I did clowns as a party craft once. I'm sure they'd double as elves.
You need a miniature terracotta flower pot, some felt, paint, a pulp ball and some hotmelt glue.
Paint pot or cover it in felt. Turn flower pot upside down, stick ball on top for head add felt or sparkly paper cone for hat. Add arms, with semicircles for hands. Glue long legs inside front edge of pot. The trick is to get the arms the right length so that the hands just fold out either side and rest on the shelf when you put your pot down. Then they kind of look right sitting there.

JjandtheBeanlovesUnicorns Fri 14-Oct-11 20:30:04

I like that idea star could really get the dcs involved with it smile

NoHunIntended Wed 19-Oct-11 22:54:58

Oh MY!!! You MNers are gonna LOVE what I have found!!!

Are you ready?

Have you been good al year?

Ok: ELF on the SHELF PAJAMAS!!!!! <wets self>. Wow, hey, just wow! smile

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaant!

WitchesAreComing Thu 20-Oct-11 09:21:15

"Available in sizes 2T, 3T, 4, 6, 8" confused

DS is a hefty 4.6 yo. What do you reckon? What are the T's all about?

<hopelessly excitable>

WitchesAreComing Thu 20-Oct-11 13:08:18

You can only buy the tabletop items in sets of four!

shock shock shock

That's er, <counts on fingers> probably going to be over £70 including postage, maybe more.

<wail>

NoHunIntended Thu 20-Oct-11 13:41:26

I don't know what the Ts mean. I did find this guide, but it doesn't really explain it! none-the-wiser .

I know re the tabletop set. If you haven't got four children, maybe double up with someone so between you you have four children and can split the items up! Still overpriced, I know!

NoHunIntended Thu 20-Oct-11 13:42:47
WitchesAreComing Thu 20-Oct-11 13:53:52

Thank you, NHI. I was becoming quite hysterical.

I only have two DC and the elder has shock stopped believing but is very imaginative so will be a great help regarding Mr Elf.

DS is four so many years ahead for Santa so if I divide the cost over five years...

winefairy Thu 20-Oct-11 13:54:03

Ohhh, good find, NoHun. Imagine Elf on the Shelf leaving Elf on the Shelf Christmas hamper PJ's. It may just have to be done, I'm afraid!

NoHunIntended Thu 20-Oct-11 14:30:03

smilesmile AreComing! Stopped believing? Oh nooooooo!

You are right re the divide the cost thing! smile It is the MN way!

winefairy, quite! And leaving snacks for Santa out in the ElfOnTheShelf beaker and plate!

WitchesAreComing Thu 20-Oct-11 15:00:09

Oh dear... I am very tempted. It's my 40th in December so I might be able to justify it (to myself) as part of my birthday present. I need them, you see, as does Santa!

NoHunIntended Thu 20-Oct-11 15:07:47

Yes, yes you do! I was not thinking clearly ('twas the excitement!) when I said they were for the children! I think I need that tabletop set for myself too!

winefairy Thu 20-Oct-11 15:13:53

Eek! Shipping brings one measly little pair of PJ's up to £48!

....and for that reason, I'm out.

<comes over all Deborah Meaden>

NoHunIntended Thu 20-Oct-11 15:56:39

Ouch! That is crazy! Unless you buy for the next few years too, and store them!

WitchesAreComing Thu 20-Oct-11 19:34:32

I'm out too with those shipping costs but I can dream / drool. Great spot, NHI smile

My Elf arrived today while I was out so he is at the Post Office awaiting collection <squee>

NoHunIntended Fri 21-Oct-11 15:52:43

I know. I won't order them this year, will see if they are in the sale after Christmas for another Christmas, else, wait til we have more disposable income. DS is only going to be 14 months this Christmas, I think I can wait. Can't believe the shipping costs! Terrible.

Have you got your Elf yet, WAC?

WitchesAreComing Fri 21-Oct-11 19:13:11

Collected him today, NoHunIntended. He is very handsome. Now for a name...

NoHunIntended Fri 21-Oct-11 20:09:35

Ooh, lovely! Enjoy your new elf! Any name ideas?

I have found my dream elf, but for £185, yes, you read that right, £185!!!!!, I think I shall have to go without. Anyway, they have sold out. SOLD OUT! So some people spend that much on a doll!!!
You can dress him up in various outfits, lots of different poses, but still. Pricey Elf. He looks so much like my little boy too, same eyes, face shape, cheeky expression. Oh well. <Gets extra Lottery ticket for tomorrow>.

WitchesAreComing Fri 21-Oct-11 20:59:35

He's gorgeous! As is your DS (just had a peek)

Fingers crossed for tomorrow smile

NoHunIntended Fri 21-Oct-11 21:07:15

Isn't he! Would make a lovely Elf On The Shelf! I've just done a bit more research, and there is a forum of these doll-fans who make clothes for their dolls, and take lots of photos of said dolls in all sorts of poses and backgrounds.

Aah thank you re my DS! smile

Fingers crossed for tomorrow's Lottery!

BlathersFright Fri 21-Oct-11 21:45:07

I love the idea but I think for £25 I'll have to stick to telling DS that the alarm sensors are "Santa's cameras"

When the light comes on, he's watching smile

WitchesAreComing Fri 21-Oct-11 21:54:44

The book is very American. Hope it doesn't confuse DS who is autistic and has quite restricted thinking. For example, "holidays" mean summer holidays and summer holidays only in his mind. Might have to do a bit of selective paraphrasing. And the size of the bathroom! (DD and I were having a sneak preview blush)

Nice idea, Blathers wink

WitchesAreComing Fri 21-Oct-11 23:34:41

First picture on profile. EotS is going to go mad in Pottery Barn on behalf of MNers if his numbers come up.

I'm a bit concerned though. He seems to have that white-eye thing shock

Sillyoldelf Fri 21-Oct-11 23:48:16

I love this idea ! Am going to go and search for my elf ...

NoHunIntended Sun 23-Oct-11 00:11:01

Ooh, WAC, exciting! Has your elf got a name yet?
Thanks re info on the American styling re the book. Hope you can still get enjoyment out of it for your DS.

Nice idea, Blathers!

Sillyoldelf, hope you let us know what you find.

Didn't win the Lottery tonight, so no £185 elf for me this week!

WitchesAreComing Sun 23-Oct-11 21:02:43

My Elf was rubbish at last night's lottery as well!

I'm sure the book will be great and thank you. We're going to have DS choose a name from a list of suggestions or he'll end up being called Teacher Susan or Daddy grin

simpson Sun 23-Oct-11 23:54:25

can I join this thread???

I have just bought a hand knitted elf (called bernard) on ebay.

My DC are 6 + 3, am looking for some good ideas of what to do with it!!!

I think Bernard is going to magically appear on 1st December having delivered advent calenders. Letters to Santa will have been left out the night before which Bernard will have "delivered" grin

WitchesAreComing Mon 24-Oct-11 00:16:24

Of course you can join! I would love to see a picture of Bernard smile and that's a lovely name.

I bought advent calendars today. Strangely, the only place I can buy old-stylee ones with nativity scenes, glitter and NO CHOCOLATE is in the sodding shopping mall from a stand selling horrible calendars. Six of your English pounds each!

But I hate the fact that the character-themed Ben Ten and Barbie ones have that piece of plastic in front of the picture inside (for the chocolate) so you can't see it properly and get no joy. As well as having nothing whatsoever to do with Christmas other than being a huge advert.

simpson Mon 24-Oct-11 00:19:58

unfortunately I have had to cough up for playmobil ones as DD is severely intolerant to dairy and soya sad

Not great at links but will give it a go grin He was a bargain at £3 grin grin

NoHunIntended Mon 24-Oct-11 01:10:44

Ah, Witches, maybe we'll win the Lottery this week!
Sue is a nice elf name!

Hello, simpson, great to have you on board. I've been collecting ideas for what to do with an elf on pinterest.com/ - if you type in Elf On The Shelf in the search field, lots of photos for ideas and inspiration come up. Or just Google images. Here is a link to my page on there: Elf Escapades - hope you can see the board I've started for elf ideas.
£3 is a Bernard bargain! Wow!

I bought a wooden advent calendar last year to re-use year after year, we don't do dairy in this house either, so I get to fill the boxes with treats of my choice. Much better, and no character-themed tack.

PlasticFlamingo Mon 24-Oct-11 05:09:13

I bought a nice plush elf from the U.S. amazon and a brown felt bag from the crysal shop. He is going to deliver the kids advent presents on Dec 1st. I bought sticker advent calendars this year so I can pop the stickers in Elf's bag every day. I love this idea and my kids love a treasure hunt, this is going to be so much fun! grin

NoHunIntended Mon 24-Oct-11 17:20:45

PF, can you link to the one you got?

I love this idea too! Can you tell?! smile

BlondeBatgirl Mon 24-Oct-11 20:09:22

Im joining!! Ive ordered "Elfy" off amazon! So fricking excited!!!! grin grin
He should be here in the next few days!!
Any more ideas for mischief??

BlondeBatgirl Mon 24-Oct-11 20:12:21

so cute!

BlondeBatgirl Mon 24-Oct-11 20:13:00
WitchesAreComing Mon 24-Oct-11 20:16:48

LOL at the backpack and, "Andrew. I'm stuck" note grin

Pinterest board is great too, NoHun!

BlondeBatgirl Mon 24-Oct-11 20:24:55

Was anyone's dc scared of the elves??
It is a bit creepy if you think about it! A elf that comes to life at night and does naughty stuff and then watches you intensely through the day! hmm

AlwaysRocking Mon 24-Oct-11 20:34:51

I love this idea so much! Sadly I fear it may be a bit beyond 6mo dd this year, but considering buying one anyway to get some practise and keep myself amused! grin

BlondeBatgirl Mon 24-Oct-11 20:39:17

DO IT!!! grin

AlwaysRocking Mon 24-Oct-11 20:41:37

I'm already getting dd her own advent calendar and special Xmas eve sleepsuit, so I guess I may as well go all out!

WitchesAreComing Mon 24-Oct-11 20:45:19

I'm quite scared of the song

shock

WitchesAreComing Mon 24-Oct-11 20:46:18

Oops - wrong link.

Creepy Song

PlasticFlamingo Tue 25-Oct-11 04:33:40

I got this one www.amazon.com/Plush-Santas-Secret-Elf-Boy/dp/B000LLJSDS/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1319513324&sr=8-2
I have never done a link before!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hope it works......
It was delivered really quickly and he is lovely.grin

BlondeBatgirl Tue 25-Oct-11 10:17:36

Oooo dont like the song! hmm
My elf came today. smile
He has no feet hmm?????????

AlwaysRocking Tue 25-Oct-11 11:08:13

I like that one plasticflamingo. Dolls freak me out if their faces are too 'real' so think it will have to be a fabric one for me smile

WitchesAreComing Tue 25-Oct-11 13:27:06

No feet? shock

There needs to be some sort of magical explanation for that. A flying elf?

simpson Tue 25-Oct-11 13:37:33

plasticflamingo - I think I have elf envy grin grin Bernard not arrived yet <impatient>

Blondebatgirl - how are you going to explain the no feet thing??

BlondeBatgirl Tue 25-Oct-11 14:06:04

I think im going to go on a hunt for a small pair of elf shoes hmm /boots!
Otherwise im going to have to get a bit imaginative?? Any ideas?? Quite like the flying elf... but then i think ds will be expecting wings! confused

BlondeBatgirl Tue 25-Oct-11 14:31:08

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Xmas-Christmas-Shoes-Green-Adult/dp/B000ZJPPTC/ref=sr_1_fkmr1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1319549372&sr=8-1-fkmr1

But elf size!!

BlondeBatgirl Tue 25-Oct-11 14:31:31
NoHunIntended Tue 25-Oct-11 15:52:44

BlondeBatgirl, no feet, that is odd! Can you make some pixie boots? Elves don't need visible wings - they are magic! smile

AlwaysRocking, start as you mean to go on, I say! Will have lovely memories (and photos!) for you, anyway.

PlasticFlamingo, that elf looks cute!

BlondeBatgirl Tue 25-Oct-11 16:21:05

Im going to have to get creative i think! Might even try to find some mini bells to go on his toes! smile

NoHunIntended Tue 25-Oct-11 18:03:13

Ooh, yes, yes to bells! Was he meant to come with feet? What does it look like in the online listing?

BlondeBatgirl Tue 25-Oct-11 18:11:58

I bought this one with the light skin tone (this one shows non existent feet in pic!)http://www.amazon.co.uk/Elf-Shelf-Christmas-Tradition-Tones/dp/B005WUA0YE/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1319562516&sr=8-3

His legs just end at the ankles! hmm

BlondeBatgirl Tue 25-Oct-11 18:16:19
NoHunIntended Tue 25-Oct-11 18:20:03

Are you sure he isn't just in a babygro?

BlondeBatgirl Tue 25-Oct-11 18:30:29

Ive just had another look...i think the idea is that hes in a babygro type thing, and you probably have to bend his feet , but to me it just looks like he has long pointy legs! Just doesn't look right without shoes!

NoHunIntended Tue 25-Oct-11 22:05:10

Totally see what you mean - have looked at other photos, e.g. pinterest.com/pin/370051582/ and yes, does look a bit in need of footwear!

Pigleychez Tue 25-Oct-11 22:07:58

I thought the same Batgirl! Hence when I made my Elf I gave him shoes smile No bells but he has a bell on his hat instead smile

simpson Tue 25-Oct-11 22:09:24

how is anyone else doing it who has bought the elf on its own???

Are you buying a notebook too for the elf to write in and DC to write a message to the elf???

<<clueless>>

BlondeBatgirl Tue 25-Oct-11 22:13:02

Have just had a nosey at your photos Pigley, your elf is so cute!! Love the fact that you made him! Im sceptical about making a pair of elfy shoes let alone a whole bloody elf! smile

WitchesAreComing Thu 27-Oct-11 18:34:09

Well here's an idea...

shock

NoHunIntended Thu 27-Oct-11 18:56:09

Don't know yet, simpson, DS only just turned one, his writing isn't very good yet. smile I will probably do a photo diary of sorts, when he is a bit older, and encourage him to write, yes.

I still haven't bought an elf yet, I can't stop thinking about the expensive one, which we can't really get in this year's budget, but maybe next year. If I am still crazy by then will probably be even worse.

WAC, that is one freaky-looking big old elf!

simpson Fri 28-Oct-11 13:11:51

Bernard arrived today <<excited>>

WitchesAreComing Fri 28-Oct-11 13:38:45

That's great!

You may need to photograph him immediately; after all, it is almost November grin

Haribojoe Tue 01-Nov-11 12:13:18

Starting to give serious thought to all things Elf related, mostly coming up with enough fun hiding ideas to last a whole month!

Was wondering should we have a thread when the elves arrive to chart their progress/antics, might give us all extra ideas grin

BlondeBatgirl Tue 01-Nov-11 12:24:04

Me too!
Ive been writing some down in a notebook but I havent got anywhere near a months worth!
Im sooooooo excited this year!! grin

Haribojoe Tue 01-Nov-11 14:48:37

Have been writing mine in my Dodo Christmas planner (that sounds really sad blush).

Think I have almost got a months worth, but am worried I'm going to need all year to think up new ideas for next Christmas grin

BlondeBatgirl Tue 01-Nov-11 15:27:26

Maybe I should tell you that I wrote my ideas down in my CHRISTMAS notebook!!
I am only admitting to that as now I know I'm not the only one!! grin

I did have thought about getting some instant snow and making up a winter scene for Alfie to play in! Snowmen and maybe a mini christmas tree????? Thought ds would love that!!

NoHunIntended Tue 01-Nov-11 17:39:25

Hope Bernard is enjoying his new home!

Get you all with your Christmas notebooks! smile I have been busy collating ideas on here, nice and visual, and saves me having to later try and decipher my awful handwriting. A thread on Mn for Elfy Escapades for ideas and inspiration is a good idea.

pissedrightoff Tue 01-Nov-11 17:50:18

I have decided my, er I mean the children's elf shall be called 'Avery'

What do you think?

NoHunIntended Tue 01-Nov-11 18:58:45

Avery the Elf is a fine name indeed!

simpson Tue 01-Nov-11 20:47:17

I have been writing ideas down too blush

Haribojoe Wed 02-Nov-11 18:50:43

Blondebat loving the Christmas scene idea grin, I can see this turning into a bit of an obsession, have already started thinking about all the "elf-size" props I should buy for future elfcapades!

BlondeBatgirl Wed 02-Nov-11 18:56:37

Ive bought one of those finger skateboards! blush

NoHunIntended Wed 02-Nov-11 19:49:07

I am definitely obsessed! I have been looking around the house thinking of good props and places for Elfy to hang out!

Loving the finger skateboard! Cool!

BlondeBatgirl Wed 02-Nov-11 19:56:42

Do you think we're going to have to set up a support group when the elves go back to santa? hmm

E.A - Elfaholics Anonymous! grin

NoHunIntended Wed 02-Nov-11 20:03:43

Hello, my name is NoHunIntended and I am an Elfaholic.

I just clicked on winefairy's link to kneehugger elves. I used to have one of those when I was a kid. I wonder if my mum still has it? I am trying to find a cheaper alternative to the elf on the shelf, but I dont think our kids will be convinced by a knitted one. I am sure a Christmas decoration shop will have one. The story is on utube anyway.

simpson Wed 02-Nov-11 22:38:49

PMSL at support group grin

Count me in blush

When is everyones elves coming out to play???

BlondeBatgirl Wed 02-Nov-11 22:44:03

Alfie is bringing the advent calenders on the 1st! grin

simpson Wed 02-Nov-11 22:58:33

aha then bernard will do the same!!!

NoHunIntended Thu 03-Nov-11 00:04:11

Ooh, an nice old authentic tree-hugger elf would be great, alysonpeaches! I think a Christmas decoration shop should have a nice, hopefully inexpensive elf, I am hoping, anyway! Hopefully we will find one before the first, as I'd like for him to bring DS's Christmas pyjamas then - not that one year old DS will really know!

winefairy Thu 03-Nov-11 11:21:38

eBay has authentic kneehuggers, alysonpeaches I know cause I've just bought some although TK Maxx had some great elves amongst their Christmas tat yesterday.

And I didn't leave the shop with several bags of aforementioned Christmas tat including a scarily realistic looking Santa and a huge sequined nutcracker doll. No siree. Wasn't me. blush

We must indeed have a dedicated Elf-antics thread when the time comes!

FreddoBaggyMac Thu 03-Nov-11 11:33:51

THANK YOU for this wonderful thread grin I've had to order the original elf from Amazon as I really feel it is a necessity in my life.

For those making their own elves I found this which it is pretty good, lots of printables including an elf passport and an elf introduction letter direct from Santa himself.

Threads like this are why I love mumsnet!

FreddoBaggyMac Thu 03-Nov-11 11:39:22

... and our elf will be arriving on 25th November [any excuse to spread Christmas out as long as possible is OK in my book. And I don't want him to be overshadowed by the playmobil/ lego advent calendars which might happen if he arrives on 1st dec!]

shouldbeelswhere Thu 03-Nov-11 11:55:05

OMG it's Trevor - we have always had him on top of our tree! Can't believe I could buy a new one! Ours must be getting on for 50 yrs old!!!!!!!!!!! we had him before I was born smile

WinterIsComing Thu 03-Nov-11 12:19:18

I'm not sure how I'm going to manage the "no touching" rule as it says in the book. DS will no doubt insist on taking the elf to bed with him. We don't even have a shelf! Then again, he could be put to bed on the windowsill surrounded by a couple of decorations. The elf, not my son obviously.

<Googles elf beds>

simpson Thu 03-Nov-11 12:25:55

Is there a no touching rule???

<ignorant>

bananamam Thu 03-Nov-11 12:36:33

Crap...I started reading this thread as a laugh....now I am bloody elf shopping blush

simpson Thu 03-Nov-11 12:39:48

Oh God, I am also now fretting about where the elf is going to sleep as we don't have a shelf either and DD(3) will also want to take it to bed with her

<<sigh>>

WinterIsComing Thu 03-Nov-11 12:40:57

I think it says something like, "don't touch me or I'll disappear" shock I'd dig the book out but it's too well-hidden right at the back of the cupboard.

I am going to interpret this advice widely I think. Of course the DC will want to touch the elf; I'm just not going to let them sleep with him or even worse, take him to school!

WinterIsComing Thu 03-Nov-11 12:43:31

I can just imagine DHs across the land receiving text messages about the absolute importance of a new shelf being put up by the end of the month grin

piximonsters Thu 03-Nov-11 13:42:42

We did this last year. It took a small amount of organisation but was so much fun. Our elf brought the children something nice each day (cheap craft activities/xmas films/chocs or set them an activity ie writing out xmas cards), but it's the naughty things he got up to that are best remembered and ensured my eldest (almost 8 last xmas) believed in the whole thing, after all no adult in their right mind would do some of the things our Elf did shock.

Eggnog arrived on the 1st, bringing advent callendars in a sack with his passport and book (to record things he got up to, and for the children to write messages to him), he decorated the children's rooms while we were out one day (Tesco were selling very cheap xmas lights), he redecorated the tree with knickers and pants (new ones fr dcs, they've never been received so excitedly in the past), he had a snowball fight (choc snowballs) with dcs cuddly toys (dcs are not usually allowed food in living room so rule broken), he hid all around the house and woke in bed with various members of the family, stuck xmas stickers around the tv and so on.

His final act of goodness was bringing the children new pjs on xmas eve, his final act of naughtiness was wrapping papering over the living room doorway before heading off with Father Christmas. It meant none of the children could sneak a peek at the presents before the rest of us were up wink and dcs loved breaking through the paper so I think that will be repeated this year. Oh and rainbow drops make good elf 'poo' if it hasn't discovered where the toilet is. grin

We used a cuddly Elf and when the dcs saw Santa he'd been briefed so could ask after his elf. This year I have a matching girl Elf who will be arriving at some point, and a reindeer (from Lakeland sale) for the grand arrival <crazed look> on December 1st.

NamesAllGone Thu 03-Nov-11 14:03:43

helooo, can I join you all! have been reading thread with excitement, and am pleased to announce that our Elf arrived today.(as in actually came in the post, not officially "arrived!")
I gothis one from M&S and he is very cute and looks quite mischievous!!He is now hidden at the back of the wardrobe, poor fellow!
Now need to make some notes and plan out a month worth of fun and mischief - can't wait!grin

NoHunIntended Thu 03-Nov-11 14:57:18

Freddo, thank you for that brilliant link - I love the passport idea, how cute!

pixi, loving your ideas. I love the acts of goodness coupled with the acts of naughtiness! And I love the name Eggnog!

Names, welcome to the club! The more the messier merrier.

Shall we start a thread tomorrow for the ideas - it will be 50 days til Christmas tomorrow! Woo hoo!

BlondeBatgirl Thu 03-Nov-11 19:04:49

Freddo I bloody love that link!!!!
Organized Christmas...Here I come!!!!!!! grin

Haribojoe Thu 03-Nov-11 21:16:01

Freddo our elf will also be arriving early, on 26th November which in the Haribo house is Pre-Christmas, Christmas day (basically putting up the decorations, listening to festive tunes and stuffing ourselves with roast dinner).

Have been shopping today and bought candy cane so that Elf can use tinsel as zip wire and some battery powered lights which he will either put on the tiny Christmas tree in the downstairs toilet, or will get tangled up in whilst we all sleep.

I can't wait grin

GetOutMyPub Thu 03-Nov-11 21:54:16

here - make your own elf on the shelf!!!

GetOutMyPub Thu 03-Nov-11 21:55:05

try here

BlondeBatgirl Thu 03-Nov-11 22:04:00

I'm going to use that to make Alfie's shoes! Still haven't got round to it!! smile

simpson Thu 03-Nov-11 23:16:04

Oooh love the ideas!!! Going to pinch the zip wire one grin

piximonster - some fab ideas thanks!!! Don't know who is going to be more excited me or the DC although they know nothing about it!!

bananamam Fri 04-Nov-11 06:58:37

Waiting on my elfgrin lots of fab ideas. Elf will arrive on 1st dec with ds and dd's Lego advent calandersmile

buzzgirly Fri 04-Nov-11 09:50:33

Wow, I love this thread! Have just ordered an Elf from amazon - I am not crafty so didn't think I would manage it myself!!

My dd is only 3 but I feel that i will be more excited each morning about finding the elf! When are you planning putting them out? Are you going to wait until 1st December?

ItLookHardToStartNewLife Fri 04-Nov-11 11:49:24

I just ordered The Elf on The Shelf from Amazon too..can't wait when it arrives, I think am getting more excited than my DDs! lol grin

NoHunIntended Fri 04-Nov-11 12:35:35

I've started a thread for the sharing of ideas for our elves: Elfish Hi Jinks. 50 days to go - get those creative juices flowing!

FreddoBaggyMac Fri 04-Nov-11 13:46:24

Glad you liked my link! Piximonsters, I love your ideas - particularly the arrival on a reindeer grin... off to the elfish hi jinks thread now...

PorkChopSter Sat 05-Nov-11 19:10:42

I went to TKMaxx - plenty of elf possibilities there. We now have a Ms Elf, although I was very tempted by a dressed up penguin.

PorkChopSter Mon 07-Nov-11 19:04:13

I also bought one on ebay whilst pissed

Search for "Alan Dart Christmas" and these beauties come up:

this
elf
Gnome
Snowman
mice A whole troop of mice grin
But this is it for me - next year I want a Knitted Christmas Cyberman

NoHunIntended Mon 07-Nov-11 21:25:39

My TKMaxx is small, will have to go to the next town. But good to know!

Good finds, PorkChop! <removes Pork's credit cards for her own good>

Oh I love the mice!!! grin

But I want the lot!!! Just figured out, that would cost me £65.88! hmm
< wonders if that would get me into trouble with dh???> grin

I have one of the actual Elf of the Shelf dolls, that I am looking to sell for £15 plus shipping. I ordered the book set as I needed another book(so all the kids have one), and ended up getting different elves(once again, so the kids all have the same one). As of right now it is still in the box with the book, but I will put it in a different box and send it signed for it anyone wants it. I have it posted on another site I am on, so whoever would like it please let me know. This is the Elf I am talking about:

4mothers1blog.files.wordpress.com/2010/12/theelf-1.jpg

If this needs to be moved, please someone let me know, just figured since this post was about them I would put it here.

TeddyBare Mon 14-Nov-11 09:06:34

If you can knit, there are some really sweet elf knitting patterns on www.ravelry.com I'm going to make this one: www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/mistletoe-elf

NotFromConcentrate Mon 14-Nov-11 09:58:34

Oh my goodness... Someone on another thread recommended EotS to me, and having read this thread I'm stupidly excited about Elf mischief!! Will go Elf shopping today and report back grin

Mine is no longer available, but good luck to all looking for some. Have found some Gund Peppermint Elves here. Not the original EotS, but still little cuties!

Quick question here - lots of you are talking of an elf each - is anyone else just getting one per household? I am waiting for one EOTS from Prezzybox, but now worried that I should have bought two!

pigleychez Wed 16-Nov-11 12:32:53

Housemum- when did you order? I ordered from Prezzybox a few nights ago and just had an email cancelling my order because they are out of stock. angry Let me order and pay for it the other night though.

Had I known i'd have found another elsewhere. Now I cant find any in stock sad

housemum Wed 16-Nov-11 12:36:40

Must have jinxed it - Prezzybox just emailed me to say they would get no more before Christmas and have refunded me sad But found this shop in Wales that have a few left - not many though, she sold 8 so far today!! So if you want the EOTS one, get in quick smile (after me!)

housemum Wed 16-Nov-11 12:39:45

I ordered mine a couple of days ago too, but had had it in my basket for a week so just clicked to confirm the order without checking the main page, it may already have been out of stock but I didn't realise.

housemum Wed 16-Nov-11 12:52:02

They have 2 left in stock now after Pigleychez and me smile, I suppose they are flying off the shelves now quite literally...

pigleychez Wed 16-Nov-11 12:55:10

Housemum- Your an angel! smile

Even better that you pay by paypal which is linked to my DH's account wink

Looks like MN strikes again with our Buying power!!

FreddoBaggyMac Wed 16-Nov-11 14:08:07

Wow the one I bought a couple of weeks ago for what I thought was a very expensive £25 is now £83 on Amazon!!! It must be a supply and demand thing - the power of mumsnet :-)

NoHunIntended Wed 16-Nov-11 14:14:54

£83??? Which one is it? Crikey!

Housemum, have only got one DC, but hoping for another (or more!) and am thinking we will get them one each, so they can take the elf with them when they start their own families.

FreddoBaggyMac Wed 16-Nov-11 14:38:15

It's just the standard one with the fair skin tone here The one with dark skin tone is available for a measley £50 here

I have 4 DC and it's definitely one elf between all of them here (even at the old prices!!)

JeremyVile Wed 16-Nov-11 14:40:11

I saw those Amazon ones too, couldnt believe the price!

But prezzybox have them back in stock. I ordered on monday, arrived yesterday. £25.

FreddoBaggyMac Wed 16-Nov-11 14:40:17

If only the elf in the shelf had featured in the John Lewis advert, they'd be worth £000000000s by now grin

FreddoBaggyMac Wed 16-Nov-11 14:41:25

Prezzybox is showing them as sold out again now Jeremy - you must have got one of the last ones!

JeremyVile Wed 16-Nov-11 14:43:34

Sorry, just checked, prezzybox sold out again!

If anyone is still planning to buy though, would be worth checking every day - they were sold out for a week when i first looked then had some in stock on monday.

Delivery very fast too, so still time to see if they re-stock.

NoHunIntended Wed 16-Nov-11 14:45:05

Unbelievable!
Should have bought shares before I started this thread! smile

pigleychez Wed 16-Nov-11 14:45:44

Jeremy- The email I got from Prezzybox this morning said
'Please accept our sincere apologies but we are not able to ship your order. This item has proven more popular globally than anticipated and our supplier of this item is not able to ship anymore to us before Christmas'.

JeremyVile Wed 16-Nov-11 14:47:31

Oh no sad

I was really lucky then, cos I hadd pretty much given up and only went on there on the off chance.

FreddoBaggyMac Wed 16-Nov-11 14:47:49

You can still get them from ebay from US sellers - about £40 though I think which is really a rip off! For anyone who hasn't got one my advice would be buy another kind of elf and let your DC watch the reading of the story on youtube which was linked to earlier in this thread!

NoHunIntended Wed 16-Nov-11 15:00:37

I am leaving it this year, DS has only turned one anyway, but for older DC, you could have cheeky things happen (e.g. turn photos upside down, green 'wee' in the toilet, underpants on the Christmas tree), and make out that the elf is too shy to be seen this Christmas, but may come out and make themselves visible next year, if they are good for the rest of the year!

housemum Wed 16-Nov-11 16:38:36

For anyone who didn't get an EOTS one, the link to organized Christmas (with a z, it's American) had some great free letters to print for your magic elf to say he's cone from Father Christmas, so any cute elf will do (and be more original). Can't do a link at the moment but it's earlier on this thread smile

ElfBazaar Wed 16-Nov-11 18:02:53

Hi guys!
I have Elf Bazaar, the Shop from Wales that has sold out of them today (thankyou!).
I have called the suppliers in the USA and they are going to let me know first thing in the morning if we can have some more (they seemed 90% sure we can).
I had them on my website at £19.99 which in my opinion is all these big companies should be selling them for. I may have to pay a higher rate for them so I can get them within 3/4 days so I would be able to sell them for £24.99.
Those of you who purchased them from me before 2.00 pm have been shipped out tonight!
I will post on here tomorrow as soon as I know, We are a small family run shop who dont understand why the big traders push up their prices, but i guess thats why they are big shops and we are little!

housemum Wed 16-Nov-11 18:52:08

Thank you Elf Bazaar! (And welcome to the mad world of Mumsnet...)

Dosey Wed 16-Nov-11 19:53:51

Thank you elf bazaar I was about to post on her about your shop since I spoke to you today over the telephone after buying your last one.
You were so kind and friendly. I really hope you get your supply and can sell at a decent and honest price. I will be recommending you to all my friends

Dysgu Wed 16-Nov-11 20:33:34

I have just ordered the Pottery Barn one - they have a 50% off on shipping right now so the total price with tax and everything was just over £30. We are really looking forward to this - I am going to have to trawl through the thread again and make a note of all the adventures and pranks that our EotS can get up to next month. DD1 is 5 and will love it all. DD2 is 2 and will hopefully get the idea that she has to be really good if the Elf is watching her!
Now to wait for it to arrive! (I did pay the extra shipping - still 50% - to have him delivered within the next 9 days, just to make sure he makes it to the UK and then to our island in time for the start of December!)
I also figure that he will be working hard over the next few years so the money is something of an investment!

NoHunIntended Wed 16-Nov-11 21:05:14

Hi, ElfBazaar, welcome to Mumsnet! Good luck with the store.

Dysgu, there is a thread dedicated to elf antics here: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/Christmas/1335634-Elfy-Escapades-Ideas-and-Inspiration-for-Hiding-and-Hi-Jinks-with-your-Elf-On-The-Shelf?msgid=28491396.

loueytb3 Wed 16-Nov-11 21:56:47

I ordered one from here £25.99 and free delivery - it arrived the next day. It says they are still in stock if you are still trying to get hold of one.

housemum Wed 16-Nov-11 22:13:30

Hope the book that comes with the elf is convincing - was suggesting to DD2 (8) that she needs to br careful how she behaves, Santa is watching and he might send one of his elves to check. She told me not to be stupid (at which point I thought, here we go the myth is busted) - "the elves make stuff it's the fairies that watch". What fricking fairies???? (off to check when Winchester Christmas market opens, there was a fairy gift stall there last year, elf might have to have s companion in crime...)

pigleychez Wed 16-Nov-11 22:17:57

Ohh Housemum, A fairy girlfriend! Just think what they could get up to at night! shock

housemum Wed 16-Nov-11 22:27:25

X rated elfin shenanigans! Would go with the Bad Santa app that DH downloaded for his iPad that I told him should be deleted immediately as the kids use it! (basically a Santa that swears at random when you touch)

housemum Wed 16-Nov-11 23:30:23

Fairies and elvesl for anyone looking for fairy goodies, scroll down and they have some cute elves, more mystical creature and fairylike than cute and cuddly, they will have a stall at Winchester Christmas market - I think it must be them I saw last year

winefairy Thu 17-Nov-11 09:11:54

Wow! I can't believe the demand for EOTS! Thankfully I got mine months ago after reading a post about them from lechat on a Christmas traditions thread in August.

Which begs the question...why was I reading a Christmas thread in August?! blush

pigleychez Thu 17-Nov-11 13:38:46

This EOTS lark nearly cost me small fortune!! £426 to be precise!

In my panic to source another Elf yesterday I can across a Danish site that had some in stock. Thought id get one but when it got to there postage page it took it up to over £40 which I was prepared to pay, so cancelled my order. (So I though anyway!)
Then the site wouldn't let me close their page. A pop up saying stay on the site or close but the close didn't work. Kept pressing and geting frustrated. Managed eventually!

Anyway call from my bank just now to say they had blocked a few payments and wanted me to confirm it was me. 2 were but one was for £426 from this site! Im guessing everytime I was pressing the close button or something that it was adding more and more Elves to my basket! (Either that or its some dodgy site!)
Either way it almost cost me quite alot for a blinking toy elf! smile

bananamam Thu 17-Nov-11 16:45:03

Am I the only one who doesn't like the look of the official elf? I got a totally different one....the other one would give dd and DS nightmares! (and me)blush

NoHunIntended Thu 17-Nov-11 16:59:56

Crikey, pigley, glad it was only a nearly and not a did!

bananamam, well, me, which is why I started the thread to see what alternatives people have found. Though I have heard the official EOTS actually is much nicer in RL than he looks in the photos.

Great fairy site, housemum.

Hi, I am currently selling some really sweet knitted elves. They were originally done as a Seven dwarves set but they look perfect for the part as a santa helper!

I am a regular ebayer and have good feedback. My ebay user id is samels001 and I have attached a link for one of the elves.

www.ebay.co.uk/itm/250930498537?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649

Happy to answer any questions through the ebay page.

housemum Thu 17-Nov-11 17:21:46

I must admit I prefer other elves, but wanted the story & the elf comes with it. I guess we'll get used to him smile

ezzie21 Thu 17-Nov-11 17:41:51

our elf was found in Velindre hospital gift shop, its a WVS shop so might be in other hospitals?

£9.99, about 12"+ tall

he will be on the door step 1 dec in a box for dd to find smile

TaperJeanGirl Thu 17-Nov-11 20:14:52

I bought a plain fabric wired-limbed doll off ebay for about £4 and have "elfed him up" he still looks like a serial killer though, and the thought of him coming to life at night gives me the creeps grin

bananamam Fri 18-Nov-11 09:04:19

We got the gund peppermint elf...he is rather small and cute.....roll on first of dec!! He is bringing advent calanders and small Christmas trees for each of the children!!...(this is in a bid to tide me over so I don't put the house decs up to early this year blush)

Erdem Fri 18-Nov-11 20:11:18

Not one to add to the hype on this..
But I just managed to get EOTS on Barnes & Noble bn.com. Its 43 USD including shipping to Ireland.

if you are still desperate for a "genuine" EOTS, looks like PotteryBarnKids.com in the US still has some - I didn't fully checkout, but my UK order page showed £33 inc shipping (half price shipping at the moment) - cheaper than some on eBay if you need one smile (don't know how long shipping is but have ordered books from US before and they've been fairly quick)

pigleychez Sat 19-Nov-11 13:11:24

Our elf arrived this morning too smile

looks lovely sitting cheekily in his little box!
Looking forward to introducing him to the girls. Decided to wait till the decs go up on the 3rd Dec. He will arrive in the morning then after breakfast we will start putting the decs up, then its the start of christmas and the house will look all festive! Plus being the weekend means we will have more time to leisurely sit and read the book together in the morning instead of rushing about getting ready for the pre-school run.

sunnyday123 Sat 19-Nov-11 14:35:41

just orderd the gun peppermint ones today and stupidly excited!!!! I've even collated the full list of 24 ideas i'm going to do!!! DH thinks i'm mad, as do some friends but i just love christmas!

bananamam Sat 19-Nov-11 14:46:18

I can't wait until 1st dec!! The gund elf is small but I think that will help him get into all sorts of mischief grin

Knackeredmother Sat 19-Nov-11 15:07:39

I love this idea! However I am a cheap skate and we have one of Santas helpers (large blue Santa like toy fiver from Primark).
He was drooped from Santas sleigh last night and was to be found in the garden surrounded by fake snow and glitter ( looking in need of resuscitation from the fall!)
I couldn't wait till December for the chance to improve dc's behaviour. They love him, have named him Jo, and are behaving impeccably 'so Jo doesn't tell Santa!'
Great idea whoever first posted!

sunnyday123 Sat 19-Nov-11 15:55:42

bananaman are you using both elves then -same antics? ive ordered the same pack of 2 (gund elf)- (one each for dds) - are you staging them both doing the same thing or just using one?

NoHunIntended Sat 19-Nov-11 16:06:17

Love Jo's arrival, Knackeredmother! smile

sunny, if I had two, I'd have them do some antics together, but othertimes have them doing different things or hiding in separate places for your DDs to find.

bananamam Sat 19-Nov-11 16:28:17

sunny we only bought one....so yep! Only using one grin

vamosbebe Sat 19-Nov-11 19:39:21

When I was growing up, we had the tradition of Black Pete (apparently German). He's a robin who has a book and a pencil under his wing ready to write down notes on naughty children to pass on to Santa. Of course, you see a liot of robins during November/December, so it always worked for my sister and I - be on your best behaviour as Black Pete's about!
And FREE :D

roundabout1 Sat 19-Nov-11 21:09:39

I have bought the Gund small Peppermint elves - boy & girl for my dd's. They are so cute, really sweet looking unlike some of them. I would be a bit scared of the genuine EOTS watching me! I am going to have them doing antics together I think. Dd2 is too young really being 17 months but I thought they could do stuff together this year & then perhaps next year get up to high jinx on their own. Still trying to decide how they are going to arrive, I'm thinking they will come on dec 1st, bought a small cuddly reindeer from a charity shop & thought it could be a magic reindeer that brings them & then stays with them til it's time to fly back?? Also have got a reindeer mini hot water bottle that I've lost the water bottle for & the dc's have never seen. Thought I could stuff the elves inside that & leave it for them. Don;t know which sounds the least credible really!!!

Leilandri Sat 19-Nov-11 22:14:04

Hi smile

Can I join you all? I have been reading this post with great interest for the past few days, and have just ordered this elf: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/370561138700?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2648

Sooo excited! My boys are 30mnths and 4 mnths, so the whole idea is still abit beyond them, but my eldest is so excited about Santa that I didn't want to miss out on this opportunity. grin I don't think that our elf will be getting up to too much this year, as I don't want to scare the boys, maybe just a little curtain swinging, and tree climbing, but I am actually writing down everyone's ideas for the years to come blush

roundabout1 Sat 19-Nov-11 22:21:20

Oh Leilandri you won't be disappointed the elfs are so cute. I've got two so maybe biased but i think the are one of the nicest I've seen.

housemum Sat 19-Nov-11 22:39:45

Can't believe DD2 is going along with the story (she's 8). There was a knock on the door wink and he was there in the gift box. I thought he would have been more effective just sat on a flowerpot with the book, but I know I'm crap at remembering to hide stuff, and I didn't want to throw the box away! Maybe I can go through a ritual of happening to leave the box out and he's sat back in it on Christmas Eve morning, then next day it's empty as he's flown back home. Or that could backfire spectacularly with tears on Christmas Day...

Leilandri Sun 20-Nov-11 21:23:14

Well I have decided how our elf "Tinky" shall arrive.
The boys will be writing their letters to Santa on the 30th, and we shall despatch them to the North Pole via helium balloon. Then the following morning, Tinky shall arrive with the advent calendars, and a letter from Santa.
I have written the letter on the computer, explaining that Tinky is there to keep an eye on them, and have used lots of clip art images in place of words, so that my eldest (2.6) can "read" it himself.

housemum Mon 21-Nov-11 11:54:57

Lovely idea Leilandri! (liking the helium balloon message idea too). I keep looking at Dobby and having evil thoughts, like finding him in the morning flat out with a whisky bottle, or with a trail of white powder (I blame watching too much Russell Howard - anyone remember the naught Henry hoovers?)

Dobby hasn't played any tricks yet, but he will! At the moment the girls just love finding him. I really want to put my 8 year old straight, worried she'll be teased at school, but the other part of me loves her innocence. She stares very hard at his face, she says, "I know he's real, but his face looks like plastic. But he comes alive at night? I wish I could touch him."

BiscuitNibbler Mon 21-Nov-11 21:43:51

I thought I had resisted the urge to get an EOTS despite reading this thread, but I was at a garden centre today and saw a big display of them, so Elvin the Elf is now residing with us. I just couldn't resist!

DH looked at me like I should be in a home when I told him it cost £25, he just doesn't grasp the cost per use argument.

NoHunIntended Mon 21-Nov-11 23:22:42

Leilandri, ooh, am so borrowing the helium balloon idea!

Biscuit, Elvin obviously threw a spell at you! They are crafty like that.

elf arrived this morning - very cute and i'm no very excited for dec 1st!

Leilandri Wed 23-Nov-11 21:55:45

Our elf arrived today, I got our postman trying to stuff him through the letterbox sad
He is soooo cute, and has had a name change already to "Kringle" as DS1 has watched a Christmas movie all about how Santa came to be Santa, and it starts with a baby being left with a group of elves, the Kringles who call him Kris, and so it begins!
I have printed off his passport, letter and report card, and have decorated a box for him to be sitting in on Dec 1st, he will be surrounded by milkyway magic stars for a yummy treat!
I now can't wait for Dec 1st, and after a really rather shite year so far, I am really looking forward to finishing 2011 with some fun and laughter.

Oops, forgot to move Dobby last night (am now setting a cryptic reminder on my phone for 10pm daily!).

Luckily hmm DD2 was a pain last night when DD1 was looking after her, answering back, so when she said Dobby hadn't moved, I said maybe he'd been nice and given her a chance to change her ways, told her he looked a bit upset (yep, she believed it) and that she'd better not do that again as if he stays home FC won't get to hear of the good things she's done.

bananamam Thu 24-Nov-11 16:06:51

Our EOTS book magically arrived today (it appeared to have been magically posted long before the postman came) everyone was very excited as we read the story over breakfast!

DSs now very excited that we may have an actual elf sent to us this year, we're looking after a Grandmother clock for a friend (long story) and they are convinced this is where the elf will appear.

Can't wait for tomorrow, let the elfcapades begin grin

ujjayi Sat 26-Nov-11 09:06:24

Someone gave one of these to my DC last year. I refused to use it as I thought it was just plain creepy looking. Are your DCs really into them? We are having issues with a tantrumming and refusenik 7 year old at the moment so perhaps I need to rethink?

Haribojoe Sun 27-Nov-11 20:30:56

The elf has arrived!

Took the kids ages to see it sitting on the clock with the Christmas tree chocolates it had kindly brought.

Mass hysteria/excitement when he was discovered.

Anytime someone mentioned the elf watching them they literally jumped grin

Even caught DS2 (4) waving at the elf !

Brilliant start to lots of Christmas fun smile

LordOfTheFlies Sun 27-Nov-11 20:39:11

I got my Hannibal from the A Team doll (liam neeson ) out of the box and wrestled the guns off him.
He looks a bit camp as his hands are sort of on his hips.
Plan is (and 'I love it when a plan comes together') to sew him into a green and red felt elfy outfit with elfy boots and a hat (glued on) with a bell on the end.

Mine will be festive, dirt cheap (£5 for doll £1-90 for felt) and unique.
<<sigh .And a bit smug>>

WinterIsComing Mon 28-Nov-11 12:32:47

You bought the pyjamas didn't you shiney? And the Pottery Barn plates and paid hundreds to get it all imported wink

We're off to Santa's grotto on Wednesday. I'm thinking I might be able to wrap up the elf / book and sneak it to Santa to give DS - since my DD has put him right off by playing that creepy Youtube Elf on the Shelf song.

HoHoHoFunIntended Mon 28-Nov-11 14:30:47

Just bought DS an elf outfit. I am so excited!

I finally finished my Elf! grin Pictures on profile.

I couldn't bring myself to pay for the whole package, so I'm afraid DS1 is getting a homemade Elf and a story that I will, um, make up as I go along. I've already told him that Father Christmas asked me to make an Elf and that only once we've given the Elf a special name, said it three times and listened for the sound of a tiny bell ringing (that'll be DH, behind his back. He's a bit hmm about it), will the Elf get his Christmas Magic and come to life at night. Not sure DS1 (3.9) buys it but hey. It was fun making the Elf. grin

He's about 4 1/2" high, and was made with a wooden bendy doll that you can buy naked and blank to customise. He was great fun to make and clothe, and I ended up forking out for some acryllics to paint his face, so I might as well have bought the official one... hmm

Not sure when we're getting started, but maybe end of first week in December.

Alfie will be arriving in his basket, with the advent calenders! We are sending our letter to Santa off tonight via 'the magic mail service'.

Alfie's first night of mischief will involve a build a bear teddy, and some superhero costumes! hmm grin

Ok Ive just opened up our efl, I didn't realise that they didnt have posable arms and legs?! confused Have you undone ur elfs arms so they are free? So many elfy questions! Im very excited.

malinkey Wed 30-Nov-11 22:40:05

Our elf is sitting waiting on top of Santa's letter by the fireplace next to the Playmobil advent calendar. I'm so excited I may not sleep! But I realise this Elf is probably going to cost me more than DS's actual Christmas present!

I don't have the proper one Need so don't know about arms, sorry.

Bugger!!!

Is it out of order for my elf to be a day late?? blush

DS thinks he is not getting an advent calender this yr due to DD's intolerances etc (chocs out) Been at college tonight so not been organised.

Bernard the elf is in my sock drawer grin

My plan is to post the letters to Santa that DC wrote yesterday after school tomorrow and then tomorrow morning Bernard will appear with 2 playmobil calenders. Hoping that because they get to open 2 days at once might soften the blow grin blush

glitch Wed 30-Nov-11 23:43:11

Our elf if ready. (totally the fault of MN)
He has Christmas bag in hand containing book, playmobile advent calendar and chocolate reindeer.
My list of things for the elf to do throughout Dec is ready.

I'm just far too excited about this!!! grin

I mentioned to my parents that I was planning to do this and that I needed to buy an elf. They kindly came back from holiday with one they picked up.

IT'S 2 FEET TALL!!!

It has metal legs under the felt so it can stand up. I don't know if my
DC will love it or fear it, lmao.

HoHoHoFunIntended Thu 01-Dec-11 00:45:40

I need to see a photo of his two-foot height elf please!

Needananswer, I haven't got one so not sure how doable this is, but could you insert your own wires to make him more posable?

Hello fellow elfers!

Jimmy the elf arrived this morning! He came in a lovely box (which took me about an hour to wrap) with an advent calendar, Santa snow globe which Granny bought, a Santa activity book and a Tinkerbell tree decoration which we bought in Disneyland Paris in September. DD was delighted, but you should have seen her face when she realised that she was only getting one chocolate from advent calendar - she was furious! She's only 3 so won't be doing any elaborate elf hiding until she gets the hang of it - he will probably be on curtain rail in tomorrow - no chocs until she finds him!

Hope everyone else's DCs have enjoyed the elves as much as the parents!

WinterIsComing Thu 01-Dec-11 12:17:40

grin at the two foot elf, yes, picture please!

Ours magically appeared in the car after our visit to the grotto. We had read the book previously and the first thing DS did when he had got over his surprise was to shout at it hmm and us because he wanted the elf to stay balanced where I'd placed him for the journey home and he wouldn't.

Was fine when we got home though and was delighted to find him hiding in the kitchen roll this morning. He seems okay with the no-touch rule too <fingers crossed> Presumably this is to stop enterprising children from "losing" the elf if they've done something especially naughty!

why have i only jsut found out about this?? sadly will be waiting until the sales, finding an elf and starting on my story books and list of pranks for next year, dd will be 8 next year so it should be good to keep her believing!!!

DS was very excited to find his elf this morning but he was a bit disappointed that he didn't talk!

Leilandri Thu 01-Dec-11 21:26:34

DS1 found 'Kringle' in his basket of treats, on the doorstep when we returned from nursery today. He was very excited, and at 30 months, I was suprised by how quickly he grasped the idea of the elf keeping an eye on him. We won't be doing mischief this year, as boys are too young, but I shall be writing everyones escapades down ready for next year! grin
His basket contained: The elf, mini santa sack with letter passport and report card, 3 treeglobes with each boys name (+1 for my nephew) choc stars, activity book, cd of Xmas songs and stories, and Polar Express on DVD!!! hmm

I have posted a pic of Elf in basket ready to be placed into porch, and afterwards safely sat on his shelf.

Dysgu Thu 01-Dec-11 21:56:46

Tequila (I let DD1 name him this morning - he is named after one of my mum's dogs!) arrived overnight. He has spent the day on DD1's chair at the table although seems to have been exploring whilst we were all out as he left snowman lollies on the stairs for pudding and then a Maisy book in their beds for bedtime! They have been entranced - they are 5.3yo and 2.11 yo and have both got the idea of not touching him but they chat away to him already!

I have just printed his certificate and letter from Santa which he will bring back with him in the morning - when he will be found on the kitchen counter, clutching a spoon and having made a mess of getting himself a bowl of cereal!

simpson Thu 01-Dec-11 22:15:23

Bernard is making his first appearance tonight

<naughty mummy was not organised enough blush>

He is attached to a strip of tinsel and dangling off our mirror with the 2 playmobil advent calenders underneath him in a pile on the floor.

He also has "written" in his notebook saying who he is etc and the no touching rule and hopefully DC (6 & 3) will love him!!! grin

pigleychez Thu 01-Dec-11 22:23:32

Great to hear that the DC's are all loving the elves smile

Our elf is arriving on Sat. Thats when we will put the decorations up. Plus decided on this as we will have more time in the morning to sit and read the book etc instead of rushing about for the nursery run.

love hearing everyones ideas and elfy escapades!

Stealing the cereal idea, thank you! I put him at the table until DH reminded me of the no-touch rule. Don't want to tempt DS.

DD (11) has Been Told About Santa after endless questions and because she is at high school but she still half-believes. It's very sweet how excited she is about the (as yet unnamed) Elf smile

minicorrect Fri 02-Dec-11 08:07:16

Fenton (had to be topical) arrived overnight on Weds. DD1 came in at 5am to ask where he came from - he was sat on the bedside table with letter of intro from Santa, passport and report card. Showed her the story on you tube and then discovered the (homemade) advent activity calendar strung along the banister. She forgot the no touching rule and had a cry when I reminded her which made me feel bad but she's loving it and keeps asking to take photos. He is on her wooden train being towed from under the sofa by the little people garage man.
This is so much fun I think it's made the wait for Christmas Day more bearable!

pigleychez Fri 02-Dec-11 22:55:48

Well tonight is the night that Elf arrives!

Santa has delivered a parcel tonight. All wrapped in brown paper with red ribbon and a big bow! The girls will love unwrapping it in the morning smile It will mark the beginning of Christmas as the tree and decorations wil also go up tomorrow.

We seriously need to keep this thread going to keep reminding me to move him though!! Its only day 2 of the Advent calendar and we forgot this mornings!

Dysgu Fri 02-Dec-11 23:18:56

Our elf, Tequila (named by DD1!) is going to be found in the living room in the morning - playing in the DS!

The girls jumped out of bed this morning to hunt him down - then both had to stand at the kitchen counter (on chairs!) to eat their breakfasts with him. Whilst they were out at school/childminder's, he took himself into the living room and messed up everything on the mantel piece!

Wow, you all have some great ideas! I was inspired by this thread to purchase an elf. DDs love him. He arrived in a suitcase on the 30th, I pretended to find the case on the doorstep.

Teens ^ that is brilliant! H won't crash the car for us though sad

So far Elf Pepper has:

Muddled up the advent calendar and filled it with chocolate, plus put those silver curly ribbons everywhere.

Drawn a huge picture of Santa on the mirror with my lipstick shock and turned all the things on the mantlepiece upside down.

Last night I almost forgot- oops- so had to run down and set up a midnight feast with the elf and other toys- I put bun wrappers on a plate (added a few crumbs) and gave them blue drinks, plus sprinked hundreds and thousands and silver balls around the table. Oh and a candle to make it look like a birthday party.

DDs have been amazed every morning so far grin

WinterWonderlandIsComing Sat 03-Dec-11 21:37:15

I'm not sure if I want my Elf to be too naughty. Hardly setting a good example is it? Do as I say; not as I do etc or is that the point, that Elf is naughty in place of the DC?

May be over-thinking this but because DS is autistic and gets hysterical phased when rules are unclear I might have to have the Most Boring Elf In History and get him to model good behaviour with just a touch of mischief.

He will be found brushing his teeth tomorrow grin but he can still do a lot of things - especially the lavatory / green wee thing.

Dysgu Sat 03-Dec-11 22:09:07

I am not sure what our elf is going to get up to overnight - but would love to read your blog teens for some ideas maybe.

We put the tree up today (well, DP and DDs did) and then we went to visit my parents. When we got home, both DDs shrieked on entering the room - the elf was climbing the tree! Cue to little girls dashing back out to me - was still unloading the car - "mum, mum, come and see what Tequila's up to now!"

Some fab ideas! Ours has been a good elf so far...left decs for the kids trees, brought them a DVD, had a tea party with other toys. DS wouldn't get why he would be a naughty elf I don't think....cheeky elf however? Oh yes..

pigleychez Sun 04-Dec-11 09:45:35

Teens- love the Blog. Great fun.

Well the kids were pretty well behaved yesterday and kept mentioning the elf so he appears to be having the desired effect ( for now anyway!)
Last night he went on my laptop and made an Elf Yourself video.

The girls loved it.. smile

PhestiveFoodAddiction Sun 04-Dec-11 10:17:45

Teens, I'd love to see your blog.

Last night Elf Pepper brought some new felt tips for the girls and some activity sheets (which I made- just dot to dots, help the elf to find his hat, draw a picture) it kept them amused for ages this morning!

My Elf isn't being too naughty, just a bit mischevious. He is definitely going to cover the place in toilet roll at some point though grin

Pigley that is brilliant! So cute.

OvO Mon 05-Dec-11 13:14:40

Our elf is very naughty. He was found playing in the bathroom sink with the bath toys, which would have been fine but it was how he was playing with them that's the problem.

There was a boat, 3 playmobil men (one of which was a policeman and had a gun), and a shark. One of the men was falling off the back of the boat and was half in the sharks mouth.

Yes, dear Mumsnetters, our elf was re-enacting a scene from Jaws.

I would let Santa know about this elfs "issues" but I fear for his job. In this economic climate I can't risk this elf losing his job. Not with a Mrs Elf and Elflings back home. I just don't know what to do.

Our Elf has been very good so far and today was found watching from above, perched ontop of the reading lamp. I do have a few more 'naughty' things planned though. We only started doing EOTS on Saturday so he's still settling in.
Kids are loving it and it does appear to be having the desired effect grin

Last night Figgy crept into ds' bedroom and pinched a Christmassy puzzle which he then proceeded to do ... but he had to leave a note for ds asking for help as he got stuck! He wrote ds a get well message on the scrabble board the other evening ... I think it is time he got up to a little elf mischief! He can save the toilet paper for when the christmas tree is up ... any other ideas?

Can someone tell me how you do the green wee trick?

HoHoHoFunIntended Tue 06-Dec-11 17:07:36

Great blog, pigley, love the font you have chosen, it looks very elfy! The video of your two dancing is brilliant, going to have to do that!

Louey, I think it's just green food dye in the toilet, or toilet cleaner if it's green would work, I guess!

sorry, have not read whole thread but I don't get it. Is the elf meant to be real? And do your DCs really believe it's real and not a toy? Do you have to place it really high up so that they can't see it's a doll? (or am I underestimating their imagination smile)

pigleychez Wed 28-Dec-11 12:47:22

Yes! The girls keep asking where he is.
They said Goodbye to him and were sad to see him go but being little I dont think they fully got it!

I quite enjoyed it too. DH thought I was mad at first but towards the end he was coming up with ideas too and getting involved!
We even made an Elf blog! smile

The girls told our Elderly neighbours about Elf and them being computer literate, I gave them the blog link. They loved it and moaned at me if I havent updated the blog by lunchtime everyday as they were waiting to see what he'd been up to!!

buzzgirly Wed 28-Dec-11 19:51:36

We are missing Jimmy the elf too. In fact on Xmas morning dd was more interested in finding him than her presents. Very sweet as she's only 3.
