We really don't want to get ds a DS this year though he wants one badly. But I am totally stumped as to what to get him - books, cds, dvds are fine, but something "main".
He doesn't want clothes, and he doesn't like lego.
Any ideas?
TIA!

Gah! just lost post and feel sympathetic to David Cameron!!!
- We have Wii, Dh has PSP, and there is a PC he can use.
- He has a digital camera with photos/music/MP3 etc.
- He hates his bike (grrr): will revisit that in spring.
- What's a DSi?????
- He's only six, dear love him.

Magnext. My DS, also 6, goes mad for it and has played with it everyday since his birthday in September. Worth getting a few sets though = more pieces to construct with.
DS wants a DS too (!) but there's no way he's having one yet...! I'll give it a few years before I buy him brain rot in plastic casing!
What about the Tag reading system. Its electronic but eductional.
you said he likes role play so how about-
dressing up stuff,pirate,cowboy etc
toy garage
train set
wigwam thang
ummm-
cricket set

Ive got DS(7) an ipod touch. He can get loads of games for free, loads more for a few pounds, he is getting all his Roald Darl audio books put on to it and his times table cd that his teacher has sent home will be put on too.
He can get onto the internet and watch Jedward on YouTube. You can also send emails, use socal networking and loads more that he wont be doing yet but might do when he gets older.

I don't get it.
You're not adverse to him using digital media- you have Wii, PSP and PC.
He badly wants a DS and you don't have any other ideas.
Unless it is unaffordable why not get him wahat he wants?
My DD got one for xmas two years ago,two weeks before her 6th birthday. It wouldn't have been my choice, but she badly wanted one because both her older brothers had them. On the day she was thrilled - it was pink and had a nintendogs case etc
She doesn't play with it all the time day to day but it has been invaluable on long car and plane journeys and at the moment she has been off school for three days with a tummy bug and it has been the only thing that has kept her still and entertained.
When she got it they were few and far between in her clas. During year two it seemed virtually all of her friends got one. I'm glad she has one. I know from my own experience that it is hard growing up being the child whose parents won't buy them the stuff everyone else has and I try (within reason) not to put my own children in that position.

My ds is 6 and is getting one, BUT dd1 had to wait until she was 7 to get one as I wasn't sure they knew the value of the amount of money, or time santas elves put into making one,
but ds loves his sister I know he appreciates the value so have no worries about getting him a Dsi
But if he didn't want that he has recently got into lego so I think he would have been getting one of the big sets
go on go on go on go on go on
I'm interested in why don't you want him to have a DS too.
I have always protested vigorously against them to my DSs, even in the airport departure lounge as they looked hopefully at me, thinking I would buy them duty free. At that point, I already had them in my bag having bought them especially for the 8 hour flight. I was the Best Mum Ever when they boarded the plane.
