Looking to get DS (6.6) a Scalextric for Christmas but don't know anything about them! He'll no doubt end up playing with his 4yr old brother with it so I worry that it might be a bit fragile? What's the difference between Scalextric and Micro Scalextric as seen a Disney Cars Micro one that might be suitable??

I found it was more a plaything for DH than DS and DS was constantly being told to be careful etc. Best to get one that is fun and less sophisticated so you are not worried about it keep falling apart and go for the Scalextrix when 8ish

I bought a cheaper version for ds when he was about 5 I think. It was a pita to put together (I had to do it rather than ds). It hardly gets played with because of this but is lots of fun when it does come out of its box!!

I think the micro scalextric is less skittish. On the big one, if you accellerate too quickly then the cars can fly off the tracks, which isn't great for young kids who don't quite have the necessary level of control! I don't think this happens so easily with the small one.

With the micro you can get a better track layout in a small space. We got one with a lot of layouts last year when ds was 4. He could build it by himself.

So the Cars Micro one may be ok then? Thanks!

Dses got one from bil last year. It is good but takes up a lot of room.

Consequently, it isn't got out very often.
