I'm sure this thread has happened already but I can't find one.

Money's tight and I'm running low on ideas that look kind of substantial. So far, I can think of:

Cheap mug, hot choc, sprinkles, small sieve
Adult colouring book and cheap pens/ Notebook and pen
Book and reading light
Cushion cover
Candle and candle holder

I don't like getting people toiletries because people can be fussy about them; especially ones that are cheap?

Anyone got any ideas?

These are all great ideas IMO. If you have a Tiger store near you, pop in - they have lovely stuff at low prices. It's like a Scandi Poundland

Sainsburys had some nice gifts for under a fiver ( because they are all in the sale) - candles and the like. I liked the set of 3 robin frangranced candles, they didn't look cheap. And a brass coloured pear you put a ball candle in ( also in sale) and both together come out at less than £5.
Ponsettia or pretty plant with lots of cellophane and ribbon?
Mini hamper- small wine, packet of cheese thins and cheese in any nice box/ basket /tin.

Small hip flasks are cheap on ebay and quite cute.
Mini cocktails - miniature booze bottles and ingredients with a recipe card.
If you're good at baking diy cookie kits can be dressed up (layer dry ingredients in a jar so it looks nice and include instructions for making into cookies)
Silicone collapsible bowls and cups, again cheap on ebay, bit random but works for outdoorsy folk.
For smokers (candle lovers maybe?) metal clippers look nice and can be got a few £.
Terrible terrible B movie dvds from pound shops / amazon. Maybe print out some B Movie bingo cards / drinking game instructions for added amusement.

I'm always losing headphones so I'd appreciate a pair. DH bought me a pair last year which zip up, they were especially good because they didn't tangle.
If you shop around you can often nice cookery books with £££s off the cover price. I got my DM a lovely, hardback national trust one from Smiths which was, iirc, £5 down from £25.

I think that with gifts under a fiver it's all about the thought and the wrapping. One of my colleagues gave me a bottle of wine today, it was so beautifully wrapped, with lovely tasteful paper and holly, I was really touched.

Oh not those tiny bottles of prosecco that are gone in 60 seconds! Such a waste of a fiver. I like the oven glove and cookbook idea. I'd be happy with tea bags coffee and biscuits. I'm always running out and drink more hot drinks in winter.

Pots of bulbs wrapped up well, or nice empty pot with packets of seeds? With seeds might be more than £5 though.
eBay do mini hot water bottles or you could try making microwave heat bags. I do these for a charity craft stall and they're very easy. You can do small squares for hand warmers, larger squares or oblongs. Use thick cotton fabric, remnants are great or cut up old stuff like jeans etc. If really pushed you can use up out of date rice from the back of the cupboard for filling, but 500g wheat from a health store is about £2. This would fill two decent sized bags. Tie the finished bags up with pretty ribbon and don't forget to add instructions ( max heating time 2 minutes, always heat with cup of water etc), you can google these. They always sell very well so people seem to like them.
Homemade nut brittle is something else I get asked for too, recipe on BBC good food and wrap in cellophane bag or nice small ( cheap) tin.

Nigel slater'S 'Kitchen Diaries III' is only £6 on amazon at the minute and is a lovely chunky substantial gift. As well as being a really excellent cook book.
