DS plays acoustic guitar and I would like to get him an electric one for Xmas. But I am clueless.

I need recommendations please and What do I need to buy with it to avoid neighbours being tortured by him?

My son has a Yamaha Pacifica and it wasn't TOO pricey and sounds very good. If you get a small practice amp and headphones that might work at keeping the sound down!

Yes I agree with the Pacifica it was recommended to me when I started as a great first electric. I loved it

I'm a guitarist and have always bought Ibanez. They have a starter model, the grg170dx, for under £200 which is an excellent buy and plays just as good as my ££££ prestige model.

Thank you all. does the size matter? Would a full size guitar be too big for him right now? His acoustic is full size and he is fine with it if that is helpful.

Full size electric guitars are smaller than full size acoustics so should be fine. Also, The guitar I mentioned above has a thinner fretboard so is ideal for smaller hands

Yes I was just reading a few reviews and I saw the thinner fretboard mentioned, good to know!

Would anyone like to advise on what constitutes a small amp? Grin I really am clueless!

It's about power output rather than physical size. I wouldn't go higher than a 20 watt amp, unless you have a soundproofed room!

Thank you this is a great help. I'm browsing and seeing lots of 10w amps for around £50, does that sound right?

I've got the bass version of the Vox Pathfinder and it's very good for the price, I'd think the guitar version would be similar.

If you want something cheaper and physically very small then I'd suggest the Orange Micro Crush, it sounds really impressive given how tiny it is. Couldn't really be used in a band setting or anything but fine for just practising at home. I'm a total sucker for Orange amps though, mine (Crush Bass 50) is my pride and joy!!
