Gluten-free and vegetarian Christmas dinner?!

The title says it all really... ideas please! I'm looking for this particular combo because I'm coeliac and several other family members are veggie. I prefer making just one dinner rather than catering for different people separately.

Any recipes or suggestions very welcome. I'm not a huge fan of nut roasts but would be open to it if anyone knows of a good recipe that doesn't make me feel like I'm chewing on pebbles

For dessert I plan to have orange and almond cake which even dh can't believe is gluten free and he complains about gluten free sausagesHmm. Makes house smell Christmassy too.

For main course would something like this work but without the pastry (or use gf pastry). It's like a vege beef bourguigion/ coq au vin. Definitely feels festive but might not be to everyone's taste.

Think we also added red pepper too.

I did this Persian squash and pistachio roast for veggies last year. Think it's gf.

Chestnut casserole maybe?
Or stuffed aubergine - stuffed with a wild rice/quinoa type stuffing.

I do like a nice cashew roast myself. And did have a recipe last year for a cranberry and pistachio but roast which felt very festive. Not sure where it came from though.

Check our deliciously Ella for recipes. I am sure she will have somethings that fit the bill as everything is gluten free. Her sweet potato curry and lentil bolognese are delicious and I am not even a vegetarian.

I made this the other day and it was delicious

So much so that I am going to make it again for my coeliac friend tomorrow.

A variation on stuffed aubergine perhaps, but I've seen some very festive stuffed butternut squash recipes around.

Google Ottolenghi+Guardian+Christmas and Anna Jones + Guardian + Christmas - loads of delicious stuff. We had GF and vegetarian xmas last year ... You def don't need to do nut roast! I try to do seasonal veg with an interesting mideast twist.
This is also very good: www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2009/nov/28/root-mash-braised-shallots-recipe-ottoleghi
Or this with GF flour: www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2010/oct/02/cauliflower-cake-recipe-yotam-ottolenghi

Thanks so much for all the ideas! Really helpful. That chocolate and chestnut roulade sounds amaaaaazing. I'm drooling a little bit now just thinking about it!

I think I will go for one of the veg-based recipes rather than nut based. Butternut squash is always a winner :-) Thanks again.

towpath Did you make the shallots in advance and reheat? It looks like that would work...

I'm in a similar position except I have one gluten free, 1 vegan, 2 vegetarians, and someone who only eats paleo!! I'd normally tell the paleo person to sod off with their trendy fad at Christmas, but it's my brother and he has ASD so tends to get very fixated with things. I couldn't find a single option that worked for all so am making about 3 different menus. Hmm

Marking place.

Does anyone know if you can get veggie pigs-in-blankets anywhere?

I'm sure they'd taste gross, but they're a Christmas staple chez moi.

I made mine last year by wrapping the Frozen quorn cocktail sausages in quorn bacon. They tasted like.... well, they tasted like lumps of quorn.

clearsommespace I didn't but I agree you could so the shallots ahead and the mash on the day - they'd probably mature nicely ...

I swear you can't recapture the pig-in-blanket hit without an actual pig being involved so I honestly wouldn't even try. devils on horseback is my one sadness about being vegetarian. but these cheese chilli biscuits are my pre-christmas-dinner snack salvation www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2009/jan/03/chilli-almond-biscuits-recipe

I'll post my christmas menu when I've decided - but I swore I'd wait til after half-term was over.

It's doable! I'm a GF veggie :) We make a nut roast from scratch every year cashew and carrot, I really like it and the rest of the family treat it like a side and they have the main meat as well. You can make nut roasts a few weeks in advance and freeze them to save hassle on the day. Ours is from a recipe book but I'm sure that you could find good ones online somewhere, I'd photograph it but I believe that my book is at MILs at the moment as we moved and it's being stored there :(

Anything with Chestnuts is a festive classic. We do a sweet roast vegetable mix as a side in our family which has chunks of red onion, sweet potato, squash and parsnip thrown in a roasting tray with some oil and maple syrup until nicely roasted, it goes nicely without the syrup too if you aren't feeling so decadent ;) It mixes up nicely in a pie with some white sauce and emmental the next day too I always overdo it for this purpose

That pistachio roast looks amazing, I think we may deviate from the usual this year!

I made Anna Jone's festive pie last year. It was delicious and went with all the usual Christmassy trimmings. I'm sure you could make the pastry gluten free. It was also brilliant cold the next day with pickles and cheese.
