What height tree in a Victorian house?

Those of you with high ceilings/Victorian properties, what height of tree do you go for? We've moved into a house with 10ft ceilings and I just can't figure out what size tree would look in proportion. Any advice gratefully received to prevent me getting over excited and buying a tree that takes over the whole room

We live in a Victorian terraced house, front door straight into the living room off the pavement type terraced!!
We have an arch going under the stairs to make a through lounge/diner with the stairs in the middle, if you see what I mean!!
Our ceilings are about 9/10 foot high & I have a 6 foot Christmas tree & it looks lovely

We had vaulted ceilings in our last house so got an 8 foot tree one year. We didn't factor in how wide a tall tree would be at the base, it was huge.

I'd go for a 6 foot tree.

8 foot - it's so gorgeous and with the fairy on the top is just a foot from the ceiling. Key is to find a narrow one so it doesn't fill the room!

We've had up to 8 ft but they can be very very wide. Last year we did a 6 ft on a stand which was better.

Ah, what a fab tree! I have a feeling I need to look more at the tree's girth than its height otherwise it's going to take over half the front room isn't it?

Yes they do come out into the room a bit at that height. We take some of the back branches off so it can be pushed back a bit.

Cross post with all of you saying the width is more of an issue! Might have to mock up a base circle to see how big I can go while DH is at work so he doesn't think I'm crazy doing this in September...

I have 7 ft but it is really too wide at the base and I'm going to replace with a six footer or maybe a slim tree

Are you having a real tree OP?

We have 10ft ceilings and go for an 7.5-8ft tree, but I quite often delicately cut randomly hack off branches at the back so I can push it back into a corner properly. It looks lovely.

And there's nothing crazy about planning Christmas in September - have you looked how active the Christmas topic is?

Ours is 8 foot and it is very wide at the base but, luckily, the house has a big curved bay on the front for it to stand in

So glad to see this. We've moved into a house with very high ceilings (around 10ft) and would love a very tall tree, but worried how much space it will take up in the front room!

We have a 7ft tree and it looks tiny. We just moved into this house just before Christmas last year. I want a bigger one for this year

Ours is only about 6.5ft (10ft ceilings) but we do it to reduce the width. Ours gets stood on a wicker hamper which is then surrounded by gifts.

Once tge kids are old enough not to faff with the tree we will go for a more size appropriate tree.

We don't have particularly high ceilings but we like our tree to literally touch the ceiling. Last years was an 8 footer and yes, it was very wide at the bottom but it looked fantastic. It's only up for a month and I'm happy to move furniture a bit to make room, we love a spectacular tree.

So I just cut out a 145cm circle of paper based on the diameter of a couple of 7ft artificial trees I saw online and its HUGE! Love the tip of hacking a few branches off the back of a real tree to make it fit - might have to try that as I think anything under a 7ft-er is going to look too puny for my liking

9ft ceilings here, and we tend to get 6ft Ikea trees (because we love the price!) and put it on a platform (which, not for nothing, shows off my tree skirt nicely! >smug-icon)

If we had high ceilings in this house dd would make me get a tree the same height and then some!! She always chooses large trees and we cut them to fit - they always graze the ceiling! I always cut branches off the back and push it into a corner then use them to decorate the mantelpiece. Check out different types of tree as some are less bushy than others.

We have an 8ft bayberry slim tree (not that I went to the attic to check the name for this thread) and it's great height but reasonable width.

Haha thanks IsItGin! Good to know there are options out there! And Preemptive don't worry, we may very likely get a real one. I think DH is on board the Christmas train now as he's talking about trees plural so quite possibly more than one real one as well!
