Can someone please explain exactly what we can watch with one?

You can watch amazon prime videos if you have prime, Netflix if you have that. Then there is the BBC I player so you can watch bbc programmes either live or on demand. There are other TV apps too so you can watch other channels.
We love ours but I don't know how good it is without Prime. You'll also need unlimited wireless broadband as it streams everything.
Let me know if you need to know anything else.

You can have netflix, bbc iplayer, 5 on demand, and amazon prime stuff on it. All 4 is supposedly coming. And there is no itv player.

We got one for £25 earlier this year. I would recommend the roku instead because it has both all 4 and itv player.

And it pays for itself very quickly if you get rid of the TV license. As long as you don't watch the live feed in BBC iplayer, you don't have to pay.

Thanks. When they say sport, do they just mean stuff you'd normally watch on BBC then?

Think of it as a tablet but on a stick. You can download apps and install on the fire stick. (Though not all apps available for fire tablets works for the stick).

For sports, I would imagine it's only what ever is available on bbc iplayer. There aren't any on netflix and prime. And I never watch 5 on demand so unless there's some there?

If you want to watch sports, you need to have now tv. Here's the list of device that it supports

I've been told by friends that it's cheaper than sky over satellite. DH isn't a sports person so we don't have them.
