Recommendations for a mobile phone for woman in her 60's.

I am planning to get my mum a new mobile. Only a fairly basic model is needed. She would need decent sized buttons and perhaps the ability to take photos. Any suggestions?

Apparently the Doro PhoneEasy range are pretty good- they've been rated highly by Which? and some models have a camera. Have a look at the 607/612/622 and see if that's what you had in mind.

I'm a woman in my 60s and I couldn't live without my iPhone!

Ziggy I'm sure you have perfectly valid reasons for favouring a "basic" phone for your DM - but I'm concerned that you have given the impression that no woman in her 60s would be capable of using anything more complex.

It doesn't paint a pretty or enticing picture of my future ...

Elysianfields · 18/12/2014 22:42

I had completely forgotten once I got to 60 I would have my marbles removed.

iPhone op I am sure would be appreciated. And please don't belittle people over 60

I'm quite happy to give the OP the benefit of the doubt - it could well be that her query is specific to her own DM's circumstances.

I would do damage to anyone who tried to separate me from my iphone at any age. (The octogenarians in the family would also fight you for use of their iphones and iPads.)

We are coming at this from very different angles, and without further info, I can see why some people may be offended.

I have to say that my suggestions were based on a (possibly wrong) assumption that the OP's mum is not great with technology and perhaps has not had many/any mobiles before. This may be because my own mother is precisely that woman and can just about make a call with hers, despite having a very sharp and fully functioning brain.

TheFirstSolo · 18/12/2014 22:53

I agree with marriednotdead. My Mum (73, nearly all marbles there still Hmm) has one of those for the bigger buttons and it's easy to use.

TheFirstSolo · 18/12/2014 22:54

Mum even sends texts now!

Redglitter · 18/12/2014 22:57

My mum has a Samsung Galaxy Y she loves it. She wanted a pretty basic smartphone, nothing fancy but one that could have apps had a relatively good camera etc

GoodKingQuintless · 18/12/2014 23:01

I just got my dad who is 87 the Doro phone, but he does not like it, as the menues are not very intuitive. He prefers Telme.

But he is 87!! Not 60.....

Ziggyzoom · 18/12/2014 23:20

Sorry if I have caused offence! I have asked my mum, who is an extremely intelligent, bright and active technophobe! What she wants and these were her specifications. She loves texting her friends (and me) and needs larger buttons because her eyesight is not great.

She has requested a basic model because she doesn't do much else other than texting although she is swayed by the idea of sending/receiving photos. She doesn't want a smartphone and would not be happy if I bought her one. This is specific to her and in no way representative of 68 year olds!

Thank you for the suggestions, I will take a look at the recommendations.

IPhones are most user-friendly imo.

loudarts · 20/12/2014 07:17

My nan has a Nokia lumia, she has always gone for phones that are easy to use, as she has poor eyesight.

Ziggyzoom · 20/12/2014 20:58

I like the look of the Nokia lumia, though it is a smartphone!

Get what she wants. My mum's old phone broke and my sister thought she was being clever (showy) by buying a better one than my mum had had even though I said mum just needed to text and phone. Cue sister being constantly contacted to ask how to work it. Cue the rest of us being called by mistake and texts being sent to the wring person

sanfairyanne · 20/12/2014 22:14

my mum has a nokia lumia and does ok with it
my samsung has a setting for larger icons and a less crowded home screen
personally would avoid iphone but am more androidy

ilovepowerhoop · 20/12/2014 22:41

my mum is 70 and has a Samsung galaxy S3. She has games and Facebook apps on it

sanfairyanne · 20/12/2014 22:45

my mum loves her stylus with the smartphone - she doesnt like using finger for typing etc

PigeonPie · 20/12/2014 22:45

My Ma is much much happier with her iPhone than she was with the old fiddly Nokia. It's much easier to use and she can actually send texts with more than 'ok'! She's been able to use it even with poor eyesight due to cataracts. She's in her 70s by the way.

Ziggyzoom · 20/12/2014 23:19

Was that the Nokia Lumia that she found fiddly Pigeon.

My mum (60) has a Nokia lumia and I think it is harder to use than my Motorola. iPhones are the easiest to use if you wanted a smartphone.
Not sure about non smartphones though, been a while since I've seen one.

readyforno2 · 21/12/2014 00:57

My grandmother is in her late seventies and loves her iPhone. I have set it up so the text is nice and big and she can read it without having to use her glasses.

Ziggy, afraid it was much longer ago than that - it was a 6100 or somesuch! She does love her iPhone though - and now her iPad Air and her Macbook Pro Smile !

Have a look at the Doro Liberto 820 as a smartphone option, brilliant phone and allows friends and family to remotely assist easily manage settings and content for them. also has a assistance button... which can come in very handy.

Or if you are looking at a phone that just makes a calls using predefined numbers.. look at the Doro Secure 580
