Toys that will never go out of fashion

This year I did a big clear-out of all the toys the DC didn't use. I was left with what I reckon are classics that will never go out of fashion. This is the kind of thing I have on my 'classic' list for present ideas for my nieces and nephews:

  • wooden blocks
  • Duplo/Lego
  • Playmobil
  • ball
  • road map mat
  • toy garage
  • matchbox cars
  • basic musical instruments
  • Schleich-type animal figurines
  • wooden farm
  • jigsaw puzzles
  • sandpit, bucket, spade
  • slide
  • easel, paint, drawing & craft materials
  • books
  • dolls
  • play kitchen with pans, utensils and play food
  • balance bike
  • scooter
  • trampoline

The DC are nearly 5 and nearly 2. What toys do your DC always play with and how old are they?

My DD is currently obsessed with the small Polly Pockets of the 80s/90s that belonged to my sister and I. Not the newer big ones but the dinky actually fit in your pocket ones.

Im.now left scouring ebay for them for her birthday Grin so ill say them.

Sylvanian Families

Those cheap dolly fold up pushchairs. Mine fight over the one we have at home (DDs aged 1 and 4). They are fought over at every toddler group we go to Grin Expensive pram is ignored. Expensive toy pushchair ignored. Confused

Any Orchard Toys game.

I agree with what's already on your list already.

I forgot the wooden train track. DS builds tracks through the house so often it's possibly become invisible to me by now.

Ours are Lego, wooden train track, barbies (dd has mine from when I was little),

I'd go for toys where the play and creativity comes from the child, rather than toys that do something for the child or have just one use. So;

Wooden bricks
Lego
A simple doll
A teddy bear
Play dough or clay
Paper and crayons etc
Scarves, bags, hats etc for dress up
Pull along cart or a wheel barrow or toy buggy

I'd avoid anything that actually claims it is educational on the box, and anything that needs batteries if I can get away with it. I really like your list.

My DD is 2yo and plays with teddies, a back pack, books, scrap paper and scissors (children's ones), play dough and in the garden she likes to have a big bucket of water, a few pots and pans and a big plastic syringe for squirting DS the flowers with.

DS is 8yo and likes Lego and his big dinosaurs, and a science kit with test tubes and pippets and a microscope that he does experiments with (I daren't look).

The DC love their cheapy doll buggy too. It was less than £10 on eBay and will hold DD just while DS and their cousins the same age push her around at top speed. I don't look...

Dressing-up clothes is a good one. I had a great cape my mum made when I was little and a sugar-paper hat :o

Brio-type wooden railway - DS is 7 and still plays with it, and inherited most of it from his Godfather who's now in his 50s.

A really nice list OP. Other traditional/timeless toys are puppets, trainset, toy castle or dolls house, science kits, stacking toys (for LOs).

Until you stand on it!

I've forgotten what it's called but does anyone remember the game where you hammered wooden shapes into a cork board with brass pins? I used to love that when I was little.

Early learning centre does a version of the cork board with the brass pins. DS loves it but we have lost the outer box so can't check the name!

Our most played with toys are
A torch, these were a massive hit in our house a torch and kaleidoscope combined.
Dressing up clothes, the scooby doo costume has been a favourite of all four DCs
Dolls House
The baby doll that does nothing but can be bathed. (and a washing up bowl to use as the baby bath)
Anything stickery, glittery crafty. I hate these things but they do entertain the DDs
Brio train set
Toy kitchen
