Advice for total games console novice - want a dance game or karaoke thing for DD (8)

I know nothing about games consoles and we have nothing at the moment but I'm thinking of getting some sort of console for dd - not keen to have loads of games but have seen the dance and karaoke games that look fun.

What do you recommend? Thanks from a tech ignoramus

Unsure if this may be too young for your DD, however I've ordered the new LeapTV that's coming out this Christmas.

It's £120 which is a bit more reasonable than most consoles. There's not a huge amount of games at the moment, however one of the first releases is a dancing game (they can see themselves on the TV dancing along with the game). Might be one that's worth looking into?

I'd recommend a Wii for this age group - there are lots of Just Dance games and karaoke type games. If you go for ones that aren't the latest chart hits the price drops a lot, and you can always pick them up second hand. I'm not a gamer at all, but have been pleasantly surprised at how much fun we've had from our Wii, with family bowling and fencing tournaments! And we also use it to stream our Netflix and iplayer to the telly (as we have an old fashioned very basic tv which doesn't have all that built in.)

Ok this is how clueless I am. Our blu Ray DVD which has iplayer on it has just stopped working. Apparently "iplayer is no longer supported on this device" whatever that means and am annoyed as it's only 3 years old. So needed to get a new iplayer thing somehow and didn't know this could be done via wii. Can it stream other catch up services too? Sorry for stupid questions. 1940s mind meets 21st century tech!

I'm not sure about streaming but I'd also recommend a wii. We have one which my kids love and the just dance games are great for this age group.

Game often have great deals on preowned consoles which are guaranteed to be fully working. The price does tend to creep up towards Christmas though. There's loads of preowned games as well, bowling/tennis/sports games are good fun even for adults.

If you want to use it for other stuff then get an X box 360 with kinect. You don't need to buy live gold to use apps anymore and setting up a silver is free.

The wii is a good choice though for games that need you to move about.
