Where to place the Christmas tree

Even from the title you can tell this is an important one!

This is our first Christmas in this house with our first DS. We have a small living room with a square bay window. There is currently a small sofa in the bay window area and another on the adjacent wall as you walk in. There are two freestanding shelving units on each side of the fireplace.

Hope that gives a quick description of the room. The problem is I can't work out where to put the Christmas tree.

The two options so far (please tell me if there is another way) -

A) move sofa in bay window to opposite wall. This would allow for a lovely big tree with plenty of room for all the presents I will have wrapped beautifully and colour co-ordinated to the room! The cons are that to have the sofa in the new location will mean taking the tv and tv unit out of the room to make space.

B) we remove one or both of the shelving units beside the fireplace and get either a slim tree or a corner tree that will fit. Practically I know this probably makes more sense but it will be a smaller tree than from option a with limited space for presents. It's also quite hard to find a decent corner tree, have only been able to find one on eBay so far.


I keep making a decision then changing my mind so need MN to decide for me. Have asked DH but he isn't a christmas fan so his suggestion is to go without a tree

I would push the sofa in front of one of the shelving units (if there is room) thereby giving you the best of all worlds. If you don't use your fireplace you could centre your sofa in the middle.
Small corner tree or no tree? Shocking, absolutely disgraceful

I can't quite picture the configuration of your room, but could you take out the shelving unit and put the sofa there but angled so it fits?

I've never heard of corner trees to be honest, don't people just put regular trees in the corner if the cant put them in the window?

Sorry I really didn't describe the room very well at all.

Sofa would be bang in the model of the room if it was in front of the fire/shelves which wouldn't work at all. No other place for it, just in the bay window or wall opposite.

Corner trees are a great idea as a normal tree wouldn't fit in due to the stand. It's a very small room so trying really hard to make it feel bigger.

Sadly I think the corner tree will be the way to go. (My current opinion - subject to change )

Is there a dining room? If so could you put the main tree in there and get a small tree like Mortified linked to, to put on a table in the living room?

Or could you put a slim but full sized tree between the two sofas (leaving the one in the window?)

Only other room is kitchen diner, no room in there at all.

op.. think i can picture it it sound like my old h ouse.... can you move the tv in the room..infront of the shelves or a different corner.. i would deff try and work it so you have it in the bay window :)

There are half trees that you can hang on the wall, you just decorate them as you would a normal Christmas tree. You may have to trawl through a lot of websites to find one though.

Waitmonkey - no tree isn't an option. I'm tempted to get remove both sofas and to just to fill the room with trees to spite him!

A half tree wouldn't work as there is only the corner area or bay window space to use.

I know the corner tree would work best practically but it's DS's first christmas so imagined the big tree for copious amounts of Pinterest inspired wannabe photographs!

Ok I'm gonna bring down the old tree from the loft today and move the furniture around to see how it all looks in the two spaces.

Your room sounds very much like mine (although I have since knocked through into the dining room) however I have never put the tree in the bay because I think it's like putting a sign up for burglars to see when you are in or out based on whether the tree lights are on or not!

I always put the tree in one of the alcoves either side of the fireplace and if necessary removed any furniture that was in the alcove to make more room. I use a normal sized tree not a corner tree and it works fine - might get a bit squished at the back but who sees that?!!! Majority of presents only go under the tree on Christmas Eve and they tend to spread out all across the fireplace which I think looks nice!

MrsLovebucket, xmasdirect.co.uk have some half Christmas trees that you can hang on the wall and they are not expensive. You might even be able to modify the tree you have to hang it up.

Love the wall hanging but no wall space for a tree. Only the bay window area or the alcove corner. Thanks though.

Put the tree in the bay, take one shelf unit out and put the tv etc in the alcove?

Might need extension cables for the tv?

The Range have a tall slim tree (200cm) for 29.99. It looks quite good for the price, have seen it in the store. It had no decs or lights on it so would be even nicer once decorated.

Under the cloak of darkness I put the Christmas tree up in the living room. We don't have curtains up yet so I'm hoping the neighbours didn't see! I love Christmas but this would be too early for the tree, even for me!

With a bit of manhandling our tree fits nicely into the alcove by the fire. As previous poster said, the back branches are all squished upwards but you can't tell from the front. Would never have thought it would fit so pleasantly surprised.

Good to hear that. I had a 'threequarter tree' in one house I lived in, as the lounge was really tiny and had part of the staircase in it. So the tree was squashed up to the newel post at the bottom of the stairs creating the threequarter look.
