Christmas

Is the Wii dead?

DD1 wants Disney Infinity for Christmas, and looking at it in Tesco, I noticed they had loads for the Xbox but none for the Wii. Then I noticed the shelves for the Xbox where long and packed, and those for the Wii were a bit pathetic and sparse.

We have a Wii and know we can get Infinity for it, but I am beginning to wonder whether it would be better to get an Xbox with the Kinnect for the family if its going to be the best thing for the future. We find the remotes on the Wii a bit temperamental anyway.

Is it just Tesco that is running the Wii down or is everyone?

TIA

There's a replacement Wii out, the Wii U. That's why you are seeing less Wii stuff out there. The Wii games will be playable on the Wii U though, so wont be obsolete.

Ahh that explains it. There was a drama getting the Wii for Christmas when it was new, I wonder if it will be the same for the Wii U?

Wii U has been out since last year, so I wouldn't worry about that. This year it's the XBox One and the PS4.

Btw, the Wii U looks really good. Got a handheld screen you can play games on, bit gimmicky right now and there aren't a lot of games that use it, but where it does get used it is good.

Oh just Googled the Wii U and realised I'd seen it before and wasn't impressed with the handheld/big screen combo. May go Xbox.

If you do go for the XBox, the 360 should be dropping in price. The new XBox is a crazy price.

I think tesco aren't that great at stocking games full stop.

You can definitely get it for the Wii. I've seen it. Try amazon?

I've seen it for the Wii too, it was in Sainsburys. Just wondering about chucking good money after bad on an out of date console.

Now done the usual and started researching new models of everything. The Xbox 360 seems an ok price though and with the Kinnect and Infinity I think will work quite well for us, with 2 DDs who aren't massive gamers and the chance to maybe swap from Netflix to Lovefilm.

You should be able to pick up Wii games a bit cheaper maybe, second hand, buy your next console when it's been out a couple years and come down in price. It pays to be slightly out of date. Smile

IWipe It really does!

I suspect the XBox 360 will drop even more soon, the new one is out 22 Nov, so I would imagine after that the 360 price will plummet.

You can get it for the Wii - but beware..... the first Wii boxes are now starting to get fatal errors in their disk readers - my friend runs a repair service and says she gets about 4 a week now - it costs just about as much to repair the thing as it would to buy one second hand...(but then you take the risk of a drive failure being the reason it is sold..).

So unless the Wii is fairly new, I would not bother buying for it... we've gone down the PS3 route after faffing with the Wii drive problem for a while... saved us having to buy a bluray player too..

We bought Infinity for our wii and it would not read it. Our wii is old. The oldest it can be in fact; I queued up to pick it up on the launch date. However, it isn't causing trouble with any other discs, just Infinity. We took the disc back to Game and they were lovely and swapped it but warned us that because it is a dual layer disc some older wiis won't read it. The new disc didn't work either, so not a disc fault. DD2 was devastated as we got it for her as a birthday present and unbeknown to us we had nothing to play it on.

Game would have refunded us due to the fact that everything else works on our wii. But they advised us that a version 2 wii would probably be fine. So we bought a lovely blue v2 wii in beautiful boxed condition from Cex for £40. It reads Infinity perfectly.

As an aside to all of this, both DD2 and I are avid Skylanders players and thought this would be similar or better. I couldn't really get into Infinity at all. DD2 played it constantly for about 2 days and hasn't touched it since Sad. She's back onto Pokemon and Skylanders and I'm on Animal Crossing New Leaf on the DS. I'm not sorry I got the "new" wii as I suspect our old one is on its last legs, but I didn't feel Inifinity lived up to the hype. Others may say differently.

DS has a Wii that he has looked to sell. Going rates on eBay are about £30, games (scanned with Music Magpie, probably not the best deal) ranged from £4ish to 25p Hmm
I think it's safe to say that the Wii is on its way out.
He is having an xbox One (a perk of being an only child/ only grandchild) and nothing else whatsoever :o
As he has no xbox and therefore no existing games it made sense to pay the extra and have the new one rather than a 360 which he would need to replace in a couple of years. Still makes me weep thinking about it though :o

Wait long enough and they will be retro Wink

Ds1 is delighted that he can get Fifa 14 for his cranky old PS2 that lives upstairs. He doesn't care how rubbish the graphics are, he likes playing on the PS2.

We got the wii u in January and it is really, really good. You can play games on the T.V and also on a smaller screen as well. We also got the Disney infinity and my DS's love it. We traded in the wii for the wii u and it has been worth it.

We have a Wii which mostly gathers dust in the front room. Can't remember the last time anyone used it.....
